Southern Assembly speaker mobilizes voters for registration

December 7, 2010 (TORIT) — James Wani Igga, the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly (SSLA) openly appealed to the Eastern Equatoria state population to ensure that they fully participate in the ongoing registration exercise, before the deadline set by Southern Sudan Referendum Commission (SSRC).

Voter registration, which began on November 15 across the 10 southern states in the north and the Diaspora countries, officially ends on December 08.

Igga, who visited Torit, the provincial capital of Eastern Equatoria state said the current figures released by the Southern Sudan Referendum Bureau (SSRB) still fell below the over 5 million people, who participated in the April general elections.

A total of 2,815,964 eligible voters from 90% of the referendum registration centers had so far registered in Southern Sudan as per December 05, according to official figures released by SSRB. The north has 93, 623.

Southern Sudan consists of 2,623 registration centers spread across the entire region, with only 165 created in the north.

The SSLA speaker, however, called upon the unregistered indigenous communities to decide now and register so that the 60% threshold, as required by law, is easily attained after the January 09, 2011 vote.

He also warned SSRC officials over earmarked plans for referendum, saying the south-ruling Sudan Peoples’ Liberation Movement (SPLM) will not abide by the National Congress Party (NCP) delayed tactics and its historical trend of allegedly dishonoring agreements.

Igga, however, appealed to state leaders, women, youth organization and all civil societies to embark on door to door campaigns in order to sensitize the masses on the importance of safely keeping voter’s cards ahead of the January 09 referendum.

The referendum on the self-determination of southerners is a key part of Sudan’s 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), the accord that ended over two-decades of a bloody civil war fought between north and south.
