Power cuts trigger student protest at Bahr-El-Ghazal University

December 7, 2010 (RUMBEK) – The students of Bahr-El-Ghazal University on began a strike at 10PM on Monday night to protest against the power cuts that have interrupted days of examinations.
This is the second time students have and to endure power cuts after priority has been given to the universities administration block, say students.
David Kuot, who is studying economics told Sudan Tribune that the students intend to protest the universities failure to provide power during the examination period in a peaceful manner. He described the administration as “weak” for not being able to provide such a basic service.
According James Deng Dimo, official reporter for the SPLM office in Western Bahr-El-Ghazal State said that authorities on Monday security and police forces were sent overnight to protect the university campus in case of violence.
The universities administration had decided on Tuesday to block workers entering the campus but later in the afternoon employees were allowed to enter after the state government intervened.
Kuot said that “services were cut off this morning as cooks and breads car was prevented[from entering] until the problem was settled”.
