Lakes state denies smuggling of $27 million into Kenya

By Manyang Mayom

December 14, 2010 (JUBA) – The Government of Lakes State under governorship of Chol Tong Mayay, had denied a media reports that it has embezzled $27 million into neighboring Kenya this year.

Khartoum TV channel Al-Shurouq has broadcast reports claiming European supporters of the south’s ruling SPLM gave the money to aid the regions referendum on independence, due to take place in January.

Alwan newspaper, repeated the allegation on November 29, reporting that Lakes state governor Chol Tong had embezzled $27 million into Kenya.

In response to the claims Lakes state minister of Information and Communication, Marik Nanga Marik issued press released saying that ‘the government refuted that the money had been smuggled to Kenya’, describing the allegations as a lie.

According the press release the ‘Lakes state government will take legal action against Al-Shurouq Television Channel for publishing the allegations.’

‘These allegations are politically propaganda to tarnish the image of the State government’ Naga said.

Speaking to Sudan Tribune, Nanga said that the allegations were manufactured by the enemies of Lakes state to defame governor Chol Tong Mayay.

He said that politicians in the state should consider that Mayay had achieved a lot in his 8 month tenure.

Nanga called for the people of Southern Sudan “to ignore and dismiss this and any other allegations invented and publicized by some northern media to create friction and mistrust among the southern masses at this critical moment of our history”.

He said that the south should focus on the peaceful conduct of referendum in Southern Sudan and issue of the contested region of Abyei, which is also due to hold a referendum to decide whether it wishes to join what may be a newly independent south.

The Lakes state minister concluded that “the elected government of Lakes state reiterates and reassures the people of its commitments to serve and deliver as promise in the government policy statement 2010”.

Whether it is a false or true allegation against the governor of Lake States Mr. Tong that he has embezled money to a foreign country as reported by the media, It would be a very good idea for the government of South Sudan to conduct internal audit and investigation to prove the reporting media of the allegations leballed on the governor of Lake State.

There is no smoke with a fire and I suggested that the governor of Lake State should be aware that South is ready to fight corruption.

If he sincerely has smuggled the alleged sum of money. That amount of money can make significant changes in the lives of the Lake State’s communities that Mr. Governor should be proud of.

What I think Mr. governor should at this critical of accusation is to form committee free of corruption to investigate this case to prove himself innocent of this alleged statement.

Maybe it could be some kind of politically motivated move by some elements in his government who want him removed from his governorship position; who knows.

Mr. Governor should also be care that all figures or authorities in any government are not pure of getting away with thing related to finance because they know themselves that they will not be there in there for ever. He think twice before considering any legal action against the reporting sources.

Again, there is no fire without a smoke and Mr. Governor be aware of that. GoSS should look into that matter before moving anywhere.

The people of Lake State of any State in the South relay on their leaders and if Mr. Governor Tong is found guilty of this allegation, therefore he has put his fellow governors in the dilema. The issue of moeny for the people is not a simple matter and should be taken slightly.

    Dear readers
Former corrupted government colluded with power hungry politicians within Rumbek town and sent wrong information out to spoil the strength of lake state government. Confirmed reports from kaya –nimule and Narus from following security organs
    1- public security
    2- National security
3- Military intelligent and SPLA force along the border
Is that no any money seized in the borders, they just received information from Rumbek town about stolen money and no any accurate reports receive from SPLM leadership in juba .
I’m not a part and parcel of lake state government but I must stand still with logics. That is why I took AK -47 in 1984 against minority clique regime in Khartoum who oppress humiliate degrade the right of southerners.
The writer a true liberator and man of logics

    Dear Southerners,

The report is all about bias against the government of Lake State and the governor as a whole. If this report is true, then the accuser must provide thorough evidences to why and how the funds were transfer to Kenya. Why people are after great leaders just for their own bias and luck of loyalty? I am not from lake state but i believe that this report is baseless. No human being can belief this unless those who talk through the air. Channel from Arabic source which is also a Khartoum tools of disgrace. Who can belief in this cheap propaganda? Haaaa

My Message to the Public and especially citizen of Lakes State. This is a very crucial time when the expectant mother is hoped to deliver of a new child. South Sudan is coming to an independant State where freedom shall flourish and prevaile. Please ignore the allegations and focus on seperation during the voting exercise. Arabs and NCP have so many tactics and strategies to confuse the citizen which they admitted themselves as plan A, B and C. Because they are very much aware that Lakes State is the strong hold of the SPLM and People of Lakes State are the backborn of the SPLM from day one and they will finish the race to win referendum that is why such report was published to confuse you and resort to fighting yourselves alone. Your sectional or comunnal fighting is known internationally and that is why NCP has that “injection”. Our piriority number one is the conduct of the referendum. Governor Chol Tong shall put this allegation as number two after referendum because there is no smoke without fire and there is no time for State Government to sue the media when there is no time left for the referendum. Maybe all friends of Chol Tong whom he promised of key political positions and who knew him more better than anybody have filed such allegations against him. I personally encourage Engineer Chol Tong and the Citizen of Lakes State to ignore the prograndas. 27Millions is a huge money. GOSS and International Community shall verify and witness the logic of the reports published.

I my self will not judge yes or no because in South Sudan most of our leaders are not servant leaders they are leader servant according to characteristic of good leadership, good leader serve his people first then himself second as per logic in Dinka that says you can’t pasture your cows without drinking thier milk but let them enjoy green pasture first so that you get enough milk for you and the calves of those cows. do not milk it all like what arab doing to us.what is in the mind of most politician is to satisfy their needs first then public second or why should i stay without eating because 2moro i will not be in the same position, bad attitude adapted, who will change the people to equal and better life of Southern Sudanese God knows. The history take me back to our Hero Dr. John Garand De Mabior word in 80’s when He said, i found people who fight but no one who distribute the food equally.upto now still no one as i can see, every leader is working for him/her self and the group loyal them leaving the masses with nothing.i have seen every where in South Sudan when you become Beny you first build good house and buy luxury car within period of 2 to three months in era which impossible as per their salary and the allowances given to them by Goverment. Southern Sudanese are struggling again who to be first, second and working class and forget that a such attitude was the one let us fight jalaba in notrh. Any way we are just waiting South Sudan come out as Country first then will deal well with such behavior from within the system.

Dear Southerners, the northern based NCP oriented media houses are all out to make sure that we the Southerners accuse ourselves falsely and hence fall apart more specially during this very paramount time where and when will very soon actualise our long awaited dream of a seperate Autonomous nation. I urge our Governor and all his official to remain calm and focus on the coming referendum . Remember, a desperate organisation like NCP and all its puppets can always say any shit but sobber Southerners can not take in such. Cheer up our governor !
