W. Equatoria state governor campaigns for separation of south
December 19, 2010 (MUNDRI) – With three weeks remaining before the people of Southern Sudan decide whether to split from the north in a self determination referendum, the Governor of Western Equatoria stat, Bangasi Joseph Bakosoro, continues to campaign for a separation vote.
On Thursday 16th December 2010, the Governor accompanied by the state Ministers, state MPs advisers wrapped up referendum campaign tour to the greater Mundri Payams (sub-counties) of Minga, Bangolo,Tore-1 and Mambe Payam of Maridi County.
Addressing the communities of the areas, Bakosoro said that “during elections campaigns I promised to visit the areas to give thanks to you for having elected me to be your head of the state.”
He added that “I am also here to listen to your problems, talk with you and see the ways forward.”
Bakosoro said that he is “not a governor who only sits in the office, but to be close to every common men in the village”.
The governor appreciated the readiness of the people of the payams to vote for the separation of southern Sudan for the total freedom of the people of southern Sudan region.
Bakosoro encouraged the local population to develop their areas, saying the government was only there to support their initiatives.
He also urged Christians as they prepare for Christmas, to pray hard for the conduct of a peaceful and successful referendum in Western Equatoria state.
In response to the complaints raised by the communities, the Governor pledged to “look into it in the near future after the referendum.”
Bakosoro promised that by next year all the Payam Administrators will have offices built.
Western Equatoria’s governor also promised to discuss the ongoing dispute with the neighboring Central Equatoria state over raided cattle with his counterpart.
He encouraged the parents to prioritize education at all levels so that all children are educated and asked communities “to cultivate a lot next year.”
Upon arrival in Mambe Payam, the Youth of the payam extended their support towards the referendum by conducting mass campaign for separation in all the Bomas in the Payam.
Speaking during the welcoming ceremony, the Chairman of SPLM Youth League Alison Dusman, stated they are ready to protect their payam in collaboration with the organized forces during the referendum process.
In addition the Payam administrator said that “the payam lacks basic health services, education, shortage of teachers in schools, access to clean water points amongst others.”
Mambe Payam in Maridi County has three bomas, with the population of 21,833.
This is the last stage of the governor’s tour to all the counties of state, which started last month ahead of the South Sudan’s self determination exercise due January 9, 2011.
The initial figures indicate that there was a high turnout to register for the referendum in Western Equatoria state according to the Referendum High Committee (SRHC).
Speaking from Yambio, the state capital William Hai Zaza, who is in responsible for outreach at the SRHC, “we are already above the average needed 60% and that of 50% Plus 1 to declare South Sudan independent.”
