Japan provides $52,946 to girls education in West Darfur State
December 20, 2010 (KHARTOUM) – Japan has handed over $52,946 for assisting girls education in Al Genina, the capital of West Darfur state.
The assistance includes 520 set of desks and chairs, and furniture for teachers’ offices and the meeting hall. The Japanese embassy in Khartoum says that before the grant students had to sit on the floor during their lessons.
The 900 students at Al Kifah Girls Primary School, who attend the school and teachers will benefit from this project.
On December 16, the First Secretary for development at the Embassy of Japan in Sudan Ms. Chie Sugino attended the handing over ceremony with the Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Zainab Seif Al-Din Bahr Al-Din, as well as other teaching staff and the students attended the ceremony.
In a press release the government of Japan said that the country ‘hopes that this assistant will encourage the improvement of girls’ enrollment at schools and contribute to accelerate social development and consolidation of peace in Darfur.’
Sudan’s western region has been ridden with conflict since rebels took up arms against the Khartoum government in 2003. The UN estimates that 300,000 have been killed in the last seven years although Sudanese government puts the figure at 10,000.
