South Sudan independence is not threat to Khartoum – southern official

December 24, 2010 (RUMBEK) – The Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS) top presidential advisor for Legal Affairs Telar Ring Deng, had said Thursday that South Sudan secession from Khartoum is not threat to the north.

Speaking to Sudan Tribune, Ring called upon all Lakes state’s 300,444 register voters to turn out to vote in the regions referendum on January 9, 2011.

He said that it was not enough to be registered if you do not vote as a 60% turnout is needed for the referendum to be vlaid.

Ring said “We will put our effort with all civil organization, youth and MPs as well executive to carryout voter education to entire South Sudanese public on referendum voting style.”

According Ring said that the north should not see the secession of the south as a potential threat:

“An independent South Sudan should not and must be viewed by the Northern Sudan and beyond as a threat, instead an independent South would work and assist the Northern Sudan in solving Darfur conflict peacefully. There would be newly created nation (South Sudan) by necessity would like peaceful and stable neighbors including North Sudan.

“People in Khartoum had taken negative analysis that if South Sudan gets an independent it will be threat, which is not correct analysis to be taken by brother and sisters in Khartoum – an independent of South Sudan will permit peace in Darfur as well other part of Khartoum under marginalized system will get heal from South Sudan independent to have peace within.”

On Wednesday, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) has declared that it will campaign for the separation of South Sudan from Khartoum. Postcards have been distributed carrying the separation symbol – one open palm, as opposed to the two hands clasped together the signals unity – and have been carried by top government officials when addressing audiences.

In Lakes state Sudan Tribune, has found that it is difficult to find people in support unity. Most experts expect the south to vote to secede.

Lakes state governor, Chol Tong Mayay, has given green light to people who want to campaign for unity to carry out their work in state.
