Kiir praises NCP, urges southerners to vote in large numbers

By Julius N. Uma

December 28, 2010 (GULU) – Southern Sudan’s president, Salva Kiir Mayardit this week wished the southern population and their families a peaceful festive season, but urged them not to forget to “dream of our forefathers,” citing the January 9, referendum.

The president’s strongly worded statement was part of this year’s Christmas message delivered to the population of the semi-autonomous region.

Southerners are due to vote in a self-determination referendum as part of the 2005 peace deal, which ended over two-decades of a bloody civil war fought between north and south.

An estimated 2 million people, according to the UN, are believed to have died with nearly 4 million displaced.

“Remember that the greatest wish of every Southern Sudanese is to wake up in that morning of January 9th, 2011 to fulfill the dream of our forefathers in the casting of that ballot which will determine the future of the coming generations,” reads President Kirr’s December 27 message.

It adds, “Moreover this historic exercise [2011 referendum] is a hard-won gain whose ultimate price has been the blood of our martyrs. It is therefore incumbent upon us all to honor our heroes and heroines in the referendum vote as a significant testimony that they did not die in vain.”

Kiir, also Sudan’s First Vice President, further acknowledged President Omer Hassan Al-Bashir and his National Congress Party (NCP) for the role they played in the signing of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

The NCP’s contribution, he emphasized, will be remembered by all Sudanese particularly southerners, who are due to participate in the referendum.

“This is a historic credit to President Bashir and the NCP and I further urge him to continue working hand in hand with us to consolidate peace and prosperity for all irrespective of what the referendum holds in store for Sudan,” further reads Kiir’s Christmas message.

Yep, we should ensure the large turnout of our people during the voting period. It is a once life time process. This is the only way I can think of at the moment to honour our martyrs and heroes who paid ultimate prices during the process. Yes for independence, and big no for forced unity. Let’s cross our fingers.

    Mr.Salva Kiir Miyardit,

I don’t think whether you has a choice to urge the whole Southern Sudanese to vote in large. It is the right for the Southern Sudanese people to do it so. When you cast your vote for Omar Beshir on April’s Election this year, did anyone told you to do it so? I think it was your choice to vote for Omar Beshir. So, be quiet. You are supposed to do your job first before you urge the Southern Sudanese people to vote in large.

What bother you and you had already kneeled yourself to Omar Beshir? “Weak and weak”
