South Sudan and Athor sign ceasefire agreement days before referendum
January 5, 2011 (JUBA) – South Sudan army signed a permanent ceasefire agreement with insurgents loyal to General George Athor who rebelled following allegations of fraud and rigging during gubernatorial elections in Jonglei last April.
The renegade general accused recently tow senior SPLM leaders from his region of hindering efforts to reconcile with Juba and end his rebellion before a referendum on independence the semi autonomous region will hold within four days.
The end of violence in the largest southern Sudan state will allow a peaceful referendum. The General who is accused of being supported by Khartoum repeated several times to Sudan Tribune he was supportive the historical vote.

“This is an important step towards establishing peace in south Sudan,” said Major General Abraham Thon, who signed the ceasefire on behalf of Athor. “This will help our people allow the benefits of good security.”
The signing ceremony was attended by the vice- president of southern Sudan government Riek Machar and the Episcopal Archbishop of Sudan, Daniel Deng Bul.
The Southern Sudan President, Salva Kiir Mayardit, last month issued a presidential decree to tasking a committee to discuss with the renegade to ways end his rebellion. The committee headed by Archbishop Daniel Deng Bul.
described it as “sad and unfortunate development,” said Colonel Philip Aguer Panyang, SPLA official spokesperson.

Bravo Gorge Athor and his followers. You are so human and patriotic and I belief even if the authority doesn’t give you a handful of thanks and integrate you and your team into the government, remember the love of this beloved soil that has directly and indirectly claimed thousands of lives, and love from God, you will get more things than the position or the rights you were fighting for. Patience pays and you should be patient for this moment and you will be respected most.

Mr. Athor now needs to return to Juba and stop being childish was wasting precious lives of our people. If you want governorship wait for the upcoming elections after referendum. I know elections in Jonglei were rigged and so were elections in Central Equatoria and Unity state.
I will support Athor or any revolution against corruption in South Sudan if this corruption with impunity, and rigging continues again after independence and in the next election or if the government of National Unity is not formed after independence after this year has promised in the South-South Dialogue last year.

Athor should be given a second chance?
I want to thank general Athor Deng Dut for his courage and brilliant moves to sign the cessation of hostility with the internationally-recongized and legitimate Government of Southern Sudan.
This is truly a courage and praiseworthy political moves.
Folks, Athor has impressive military and political contributions to our liberation struggle. And I sometime wonder where will my mother’s ancestral homeland of Bor be with out Athor’s help?
Folks, we should always forgive one another. Every human being is to error and every time you will have to be corrected.
Precisely, this is what we want to do George Athor to rejoin the Southern Sudan government. He is a brilliant and courage military man and the people of Southern Sudan do need his military expertise and contribution.
Folks, I have said many times on this magnificently great website and I want to say it once again, let us stop preaching down-market, diversionary and outdated stone age period politics that have reduced us into the lowest common denominator in the scale of contemporary human beings.
Let us promote, encourage, and emphasis our shared commonality and de-emphasis our personal and old-fashioned political differences for the greater good of our ordinary peace-loving people.
Finally and last, but not certainly the least, May almighty God creator of heaven and Earth bless the long-suffering and long-objectified people of Southern Sudan who have been brutally humiliated beyond belief by various brutal, murderous and fatalistic Islamic regimes that have come and gone in the lunatic asylum capital Khartoum.

To begin with, I would like to thank South Sudan’s Government & General George Athor for this gratitude and brilliant moved to signed a permanent ceasefire agreement. This moved shows that both general Athor and South Sudan government officals loves their people to have their own state shorlty. Even if general athor rebelled and clashed with South Sudan Army several times due gubernatorial elections in a State of Jonglei in April last year, they put everything behind and work together to reach the agreement that engage them to achieve an outstanding issuee soon or later. In addition, everyone should for gives general Athor for a decision he made after he lost gubernatorial election in Jonglei last April, and also George Athor should apologize to people of Jonglei state for rebellion against them. He still have many opportunities, but the action taken by his insurgents last month when they were almost to reach final agreement with South Sudan government is so disappointed and discourageous to all his supporters. He is a popular and respectful general in Spla/Splm’s history. I welcome this decision and wishing them the best to finalize it successfully.

My sincerest comradeship goes to President Salva Kiir Mayardit, plus His Lordship Daniel Deng Bul for their unflinching efforts to bring Lt. General Athor back to the government.
Athough General Athor wasn’t present at the signing table in the heart of Juba; nevertheless, he has made an appreciative move not only to himself, but also to Southern Sudanese at home and around the world.
Apparently, our soon-to-be a nation needs collaborative efforts from each and every single citizen in Southern Sudan – and our brother Lt. General Athor Deng is no exception. Bravo to Mayardit! Bravo to His Lord, Daniel Deng Bul de Yak! And final bravo to Lt. General Athor.
