He said he was pleased but what he saw at the polling centres, where turnout looked high and praised the state government on the peaceful starts of the polling exercise in the state. No violence or threat of incident has so far being reported, despite a great deal of speculation to the effect, in the run up to polling within the state.

He called upon the citizens of the state to remain calm but he also cautioned them not to be swept up by the revelry that may in time lead to innocent people being hurt.

Thousand of southerner Sudanese began voting on Sunday in the regions long-awaited self determination referendum in what many analysts believe could lead to the creation of Africa’s 54th nation.

The week-long vote, which started on Sunday, is a key part of the Sudan’s 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). About 3.9 million registered southerners, both from within the country and in the Diaspora, are expected to vote in the referendum.

In Juba, the regional state capital, businesses remained closed while the main roads were almost deserted. Military trucks occasionally patrolled the city center, a sign that the process was closely being monitored by the security forces.

Justice Chan Reec Madut is due to visits all the ten state of southern Sudan in an attempt to monitor the progress of the referendum polling Exercise.

    Omoni Atari,

Don’t worry about other states, they are hitting the same target because this is the pride of South Sudan not Eastern Equatoria State alone. The militia, bandit, and stereotype viruses are all over the South but the commitment to vote for becoming first class citizens in one’s own country has been steadily gaining ground.
