Saudi Arabia says too early to speak about recognizing South Sudan state

January 10, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The Saudi Arabian government on Monday took a cautious approach towards the ongoing referendum process in South Sudan saying it is “too early” to speak about recognizing a possible new state that emerges.

Saudi_Arabia_flag.jpgThe independence referendum is the centerpiece of the 2005 north-south peace deal that ended a two decades of civil war in which some two million people were killed and another four million fled their homes.

South Sudanese people poured into polling stations since Sunday and it is all but certain that the majority will opt for secession.

Saudi Arabia, a major Arab country, commented on the vote saying that is monitoring its progress.

The Saudi state minister for foreign affairs Nizar Obaid Madani told reporters in Riyadh that his country supports the unity and stability of Sudan according to statements carried by the London-based Al-Sharq Al-Awsat.

“There is no doubt. We are interested in the unity and stability of Sudan, and Sudan is an important country and a neighbor and its stability is vital for the region,” Madani said.

But he declined to say what his government’s response would be to a vote that favors South Sudan independence.

“We are following the referendum that is taking place in Sudan and it is too early to speak about it [recognizing South Sudan state]” he added.

Saudi Arabia has shown little public interest in Sudan’s affairs in the past but it is believed that it wants the country to remain united in line with the general sentiment in the Arab world.

However, it is not expected that Riyadh would dissent from a worldwide recognition of a new state in South Sudan.

The Sudanese 2nd Vice president Ali Osman Taha is currently visiting Saudi Arabia where he delivered a letter from his boss Omer Hassan Al-Bashir to King Abdullah Bin Abdel-Aziz.

Saudi Arabia is a country full of shit. You can not expect anything positive for our new born nation from an arab nation. Saudi Arabia is where Bashir goes for advices on how to deal away with black African is Sudan soil and that is why they called sudan an arab and muslim nation which is not true.

The Arabs are terrible traders and this is how I think they encroached the sudanese land and today called themselves land owners. May God give them everlasting punishment for their abuse on God’s people. Amen Amen

Too early or not to recognize the new State is self-explanatory. South Sudan has already gone. Has Saudi Arabia got problem with that? Hope not. Khartoum and its allies are left with one choice; to recognize and respect the expected result of independence and be good, reliable, and trusted neighbor at all times or face the rising clouds that are converging on Khartoum before the end of the year.

Independence of South Sudan is not the end of the journey to freedom since Khartoum has a proven record of abrogating the key CPA protocols especially the one of Abyei, N-S border demarcation, and popular consultation for Southern Blue Nile and Nuba Mountains besides waging continued proxy wars to create insecurity in the South. This time Khartoum will never sleep but needs to prepare itself fully to publicly tell the story of what goes around comes around likewise.
