Darfur peace partner denies that he was asked to leave South Sudan
January 13, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The ex-rebel leader of the largest Darfur group to sign a peace deal with Khartoum said that the Government of South Sudan (GoSS) has not made any move to eject him from the semi-autonomous region where he has been residing for the last few months.
Kiir said his expulsion order guaranteed that “no opposition in the north shall take Juba as a base,”. Later however, the head of Sudan’s National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) Mohamed Atta said that GoSS has not followed through on its promises.
But Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) chief Minni Arcua Minnawi told the London based Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper that Kiir’s directive was in reference to the armed movements that did not sign peace agreement with Khartoum.
Minnawi pointed out that during his tenure as Bashir’s senior presidential assistant, he was working alongside with Kiir in the national unity government adding that it is up to him to decide where to stay.
The SLA leader said that even if GoSS expels him it would not cause a problem because his forces are in Darfur and not in the South. He added that his military presence in Darfur is worrying the ruling National Congress Party (NCP).
The U.S. senator John Kerry who was visiting Sudan last week revealed that president Barack Obama asked Kiir not to host Darfur rebels in a bid to prevent any conflict with Khartoum during the crucial referendum process.
Minnawi was the main signatory of the Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) in Abuja but later things soured between him and Khartoum as he alleged non-implementation. Last month, Bashir removed him from the chairmanship of the Transitional Darfur Regional Authority (TDRA).
The NCP said that the decision was made in light of Minnawi’s absence from Khartoum.
