Deputy Chief of SPLA condemns the rebel attacks in Unity State
By Bonifacio Taban Kuich
January 14, 2011 (BENTIU)- The deputy chief of the southern army (SPLA) Paulino Matip has condemned rebel factions who have attacked some areas of Unity State, in an interview with Sudan Tribune.
Speaking from Juba on Thursday, Matip called on the leaders of the rebels to join stop fighting and work for development and peaceful co-existence in the south, especially considering that the south is currently voting on whether to become independent and form a new country.
He urged the citizens in the areas bordering north to follow the law during the referendum process in order to for the south to secede from the north.
Matip called upon those in Unity state who took up arms against the southern government following last April’s general election – including Gatluck Gai, whose forces clashed with the SPLA last week – to come together for reconciliation for the sake of achieving the region’s independence.
He described Unity State as the eye of South Sudan, because of the significance of its oil fields and because it is the most populated of the ten southern states. Matip said that he hopes the people of unity state will vote for separation.
Matip appealed to citizens who had registered but not vote to go out and cast their ballot. A quorum of 60% is needed for the vote to be valid under Sudan’s referendum law. According to the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission says that this has already been achieved. Some states have reported a 90% turnout.
The SPLA’s deputy chief said that he would visit Unity state after the referendum has been completed.

Guys, leave chief alone,
wait your time, or otherwise you will not reach that post.
Matip need to send or deploy his troop along the border of Abyei, especially his former soldiers ,so that he can smell the smoke fired by Arabs, because he had never fought Arabs/NIF regime,so no need of him to shout like hornbill from Juba to Unity state about his brother Gatluak Gai.

Thank Paulino Matiip Nhial, but, however, you are an agent to this mess in Unity State and at the same time there is no different between you and Gatluak Gai. The riot Gatluak Gai is doing in Unity State is the same thing with what you had done in the past.
I don’t see the point why you blame Gatluak Gai. All Nuer Commanders fight against the SPLM/SPLA in order to get a position. So, that is the same thing when you fight against the SPLM/SPLA you become a Deputy Chief of SPLA. Therefore, if Gatluak Gai fight against the SPLM/SPLA, then maybe he will be a President of Southern Sudan. So, stop accusing or condemning Gatluak Gai for what he is doing in Unity State. Before you join the SPLM/SPLA, Gatluak Gai was a Second Leutinent in your force as well as Commander Domai Kel, Gatdet Yak and so many others Nuer Generals. As a point, you don’t need to pretend yourself like you don’t know what Gatluak Gai is doing. This Unity State become a State for “Homeless People or a Place for Rebel people”

An armed rebellion should be discouraged at any cost in southern sudan. It is good for the chief to say that but like one other commentator said above, He should talk to them face to face. There is no need to fight. There are million ways of solving problems with out taking up arms.
FOR READERS, DONT FORGET TO IGNORE RACIST COMMENTS FROM SOME CONUFSED COMMENTATORS( I WOULD SAY HIRED AGENTS TO SPOIL THE COEXISTENCE OF THE PEOPLE).
