Anesia Achieng Karlo the focal person in charge of training and the state polling data told Sudan Tribune that the 90% mark was based on the first five days of polling across the eight counties of the state.

A turnout of over 60% of registered voters is needed for the vote to be valid under referendum law.

The official hailed the peaceful conduct of the referendum and the goodwill accorded to their polling staff. There have been no threats or insecurity issues reported in Eastern Equatoria.

Achieng called upon the community to adhere to the rules and procedures put in place for the success of the Southern referendum and she urged those who all who had registered to cast their vote.

Southern Sudanese citizens have been voting, in accordance with the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement, in which the south and north of Sudan laid down arms after over twenty years of conflict. The accord gave the south the right to choose between remaining united with the north or to become an independent country.

In Eastern Equatoria State over 461,274 voters registered to cast their ballots in the referendum, which began on January 9 and ends on January 15.

“We are progressing very well and I hope by Saturday the 15 we would reach over 95 something percent, it will be a real success,” said Achieng.

Southern Sudan’s self-determination referendum, now in its fifth day, remains on course to meet internationally standards, according to former US President Jimmy Carter, who is leading a monitoring from his own organization.

Most analysts believe that the south will break away from the north to form its own country. Results are expected in early February.

Thank you Achieng for you this remarkable and positive information.
Although is my state,i should not just feel excited and happy, because 90% votes are not yet specifically directed to one party, which is separation or unity.
And am very sure all E.Equatorians are voting separation.
And about security, all Equatoria citizens are natural peace loving people in sudan. They love and value lives as as God gift.
    “Let south unite us”

Omoni Atari, more then three-quaters of all Southerners have voted for seperation, not only Equatorians.
Brother I am typicaly a true Equatorians, but I am against divisions among our selves as we are all Southerners.

You are right,Equatorians are God’ fearing and loving people who respected human life.
Therefore, please let us transform this to other fellow southerners so that they may also respect us as well as them selves.

Back to the topic, congratulation for the peolpe of
Eastern Equatoria for keeping your cards and turn up to vote for our freedom without hinderance.
Let us also hope that this percentanges will also be for seperation as well.

My massage to all out ten states of Southern Sudan is that:
We have become a new nation in Africa, the republic of South Sudan because I am not suporting the idea of changing the name.
Let peace, love, respect, fellowship, unity, and equality be among us so that we will realy be recognized world-wide as a new nation, and also above that let us remain faithfuly to our God through whom we have achieved all this historic event thank.
