UK donates $ 30 mln for supporting Sudan’s Darfur region
KHARTOUM, May 18, 2004 (SUNA) — The British Envoy for Peace in Sudan, Mr. Alan Goulty, has rejected labelling Darfur incidents as ethnic cleansing as the term was absent in the recent UN report on Darfur.
In a press conference he held at the British Embassy here at the end of his visit to Sudan Tuesday, Goulty affirmed support to Sudan’s efforts for solving the problem of the conflict in Darfur via provision of infrastructures in the area, announcing his country’s contribution of 30 million dollars for supporting Darfur.
Goulty pointed out that he felt the seriousness of the Sudanese government to end Darfur crisis.
He called on all parties to respect the cease-fire in Darfur, referring to the support of the international community to the efforts of the African Union concerning Darfur.
Goulty expressed his country’s readiness to extend additional funds to face the humanitarian situation in Darfur.
On the ongoing peace talks in Naivasha, Kenya, Goulty said he felt the seriousness of the two parties to reach a peace agreement ending two decades of war during his meetings with First Vice President Ali Osman Mohammed Taha and Chairman of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement John Garang in Naivasha last week.
