UN chief asks Libyan leader to help for solving W. Sudan conflict
TRIPOLI, Libya, May 18, 2004 (JANA) — Secretary-General of the United Nations Kofi Annan telephoned the brother leader of the revolution [Libyan leader Muammar al-Qadhafi] yesterday evening.
During their conversation, the UN secretary-general saluted the brother leader for his great efforts to achieve and support security, peace and stability around the African continent and in the world.
The UN secretary-general asked the brother leader to intervene with the African Union to achieve cooperation with the United Nations in working together to find a peaceful solution to the problem in the Darfur region [of Sudan], because of the high standing he enjoys within the African Union and because of his role as a high guardian of peace in the COMESSA [Community of Sahel and Saharan States] region, the base of the African Union.
