By Manyang Mayom

January 19, 2011 (RUMBEK) – The Lakes state announced on Wednesday the preliminary results of south Sudan’s referendum on independence, showing an overwhelming vote for in favor of secession.

According to a document seen by Sudan Tribune, signed by Michael Mabor Makuei the chairman of Lakes state High Referendum Committee, indicated that 99.924 percent have voted for the favor of secession, while only 0.076 percent voted for the unity of Sudan.

The document reported that of the 300,444 people registered in Lakes state 299,041 voted, meaning that the state had a turnout of 99.53 percent. There were 450 invalid ballots.

Southern officials claimed that people who had voted for unity must have been from remote areas which were not reached by the southern government’s outreach committee.

However, Rumbek Central county had the most votes for unity vote with 103. Rumbek East County reported 59 votes for unity; Cueibet county 41; Yirol West county 41; Yirol East county 8; Wulu county 3.

Rumbek North county and Awerial County of Lakes state reported no votes for unity.

In a press conference Lakes state governor, Chol Tong Mayay, said he was “excited with result” despite challenges including lack of water points and transport.

Tong also appreciated the work well done by international observers, the traditional chief authority, referendum polling officers, and national media for covering the referendum in fair attitude.

The governor congratulated the state on the conduct of the referendum and the choosing separation.

“I am very happy for this result which fully indicate secession of South Sudan from Khartoum regime, I am happy with this result because I was already separatist since day one – we get ourselves in new nation and with new history added into Africa as a continent to have new chapter history in new state.”

Congratulations and many thanks to my dear lakers for overwhelmingly voted for secession. However much my vote was counted in Central Equatoria Am still proud of you. We don’t mind of few individuals who voted for unity that is it in every community there are always those who seek to go to Hell even when the road to heaven is wide enough. Am now in limbo due to overwhelm excitement hence I run short of words to express my happiness.

Lakes State result is to be applauded. Those who voted for unity in Lakes State should now respect the will of majority.

On the other hand, previous fear about Wulu people was exaggerated. Well done jur-bel.

Bravo, Bravo and Bravo a thousand times my dear cousins of Lakes state. You have scored the highest secession vote of the overall state unless there will be another state with closer or 100% overal vote for secession.

It is very excellent that you have voted into that “One Hand” of Ngudeng’s predicted symbol of separation.

Thanks again for the job well done. Let us all fit into that “One Hand” as Ngundeng predicted!!!
