Jonglei State voted 99% for South Sudan secession
January 21, 2011 (BOR) – Preliminary results released by Jonglei state high committee for referendum on Friday reveal that 99.89% voters opted for south Sudan’s secession from the north.
South Sudan’s self determination referendum was agreed as part of a 2005 peace deal, which ended decades of civil war, in which killed 2 million people died, according to the UN.
Out 430,069 votes cast, 429,604 chose secession, Ruben Garang Youl, the chairperson for Jonglei SHC announced in Bor, the provincial capital.
Only 112 ballot votes were counted for unity, 227 votes were invalid and were 126 were unmarked.
Jonglei state’s results were initially delayed due to transportation difficulties, the state high committee said on Friday.
