Sudan’s FM criticizes US Congress over sanctions

KHARTOUM, May 19, 2004 (Sudan Tribune) — Sudanese foreign minister Mustafa Osman Ismail, has belittled the US Congress’ call for imposing more sanctions against Sudan, pointing out that there were neither economic nor commercial links between Khartoum and Washington.

The minister said he was expecting more resolutions against Sudan, especially under the light of the forthcoming US presidential elections. He added that while positive statements had been issued by the US mission in Khartoum, the US Congress was calling for more sanctions against Sudan.

He said the US Congress was behind the Sudan Peace Act and he regarded this as the worst ever bill passed by the Congress. The minister said that while the Act called for peace on the surface, in reality it backed war and destruction.
