Salva Kiir vows to contest for South Sudan presidency after secession

January 24, 2010 (JUBA) — Salva Kiir Mayardit, the South Sudan president has declared his intention to contest the presidency of the newly created nation, should the semi-autonomous region gain independence in July this year.

“There is no vacuum in leadership as many of you are already thinking. Those who think that I will step down after the referendum are wrong. I given the mandate by the people and I have to fulfill my obligations” Kiir told delegates attending the opening of the second session of Southern Sudan Parliament.

Clad in a dark-blue suit and his trademark hat, Kiir, also Sudan’s first vice president also congratulated southerners for the whole-hearted solidarity they demonstrated during the one-week long self-determination referendum polling.

Preliminary results indicate voters overwhelming voted to separate from the north, in a process widely accepted as having been conducted in full compliance with internationally agreeable standards and principles. However, the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission has said that turnout exceeded 100 percent in 10 counties in the south.

The new southern leadership, Kirr said, will focus on building strong relations with the north and neighboring nations, saying it’s essential for the economic stability of the country.

“As southerners, we should never allow individual interests override our national interests. Nations are built by people through sacrifice, patriotism and a common goal,” the southern leader said.

He further appealed to members of Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly (SSLA) to expedite the passing of certain key bills, citing the 2011 budget, transitional constitution as well as other relevant laws necessary to guide the new nation.

On Abyei, President Kiir vowed to protect the grazing rights of the nomadic Messeriya tribe, and urged the Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party to remain committed to the ongoing post-referendum negotiations with the south-ruling party.

The southern leadership, the president added, remain strongly opposed to military options for resolving the conflict in Sudan’s troubled western region of Darfur, but said peaceful measures should be taken.

Last week, Joseph Lagu, president Kiir’s senior advisor on current affairs said the southern leadership should institute term limits, to enable everyone exercise power, once given the opportunity.

“Let’s not follow the steps taken by the successive northern regimes. There are advantages that usually come with political power, but the problem is that those in charge are tempted to hang on for so long,” Lagu told journalists in Juba, the regional state capital.

His remarks, analysts say, could have been the main reason why Kiir openly emerged to declare his intentions for the southern presidency ahead of the final referendum results due on February 14.

    Kiir deserve it

Kiir deserve it for second 5,6 more after announcement of independent. And will be done no third term. We need Constition Amendment these to regulated the Nation. Office duraration should no longer than 5 to 6years one term.

Those talk about Riek Machar, he is the one Ruling now with kiir and if Kiir win he still as second to him. Unless if he wanted to run somewhere else. No different from those president now and second him.

    A. 5yrs office and new election for second term.= 10yrs if win second office.

B 6yrs office and new election for second term = 12yrs if second office.

No more than 6yrs in one term in office for South sudan.
so thing need to be law and oredr this time to avoid corruption.

    Tone of liberators

    HAHAHAHAHA … HAHAHA.. HAHAHA

    Folks,

Did you read carefully what Mr. Kiir said about north?
he said “will focus on building strong relations with the north and neighboring nations, saying it’s essential for the economic stability of the country”

You guys have to know the fat that south stability is located in Khartoum and not Washington and Mr. Kiir and others know very well that who ever sits in south presential chair should have gotten the approval from Khartoum first otherwise he will get the hell!!!!

South-North relation will always be like Lebanon-Syria relation, Irag-Iran relation and south will always perform what serves Khartoum interest in the first place and of course serves the south interest in return.

Dinka Nok should eat “NEEM” because Abyeii will never go south as south government has no ability to fight north, any fight with north means the death for the whole south as south economy is completely bond with north (at least for now and all the indications show will be for ever).

Like it or not, south Sudan independent state will serve our interest much more than south Sudan (a lot of headache) united with north as before, you will now strongly be related with north but with no VETO and power + no headache + no citizenship right + no molly-coddle (???) any more!

    Regards!

Almost all (98%) southern sudanese voted for ONE HAND. That one hand accomodated us all. Can we conclude that the prophecy of Ngundeng came true when he said (PEOPLE OF THE SOUTH WILL SUFFER ALOT AND AT THE END THEY WILL FIT ONLY IN ONE HAND)

Coming back to the topic, do not panic Mr. president. it is your democratic right to contest for the presidency of our nation. southern sudanese elected you last year and they can again bring you in again. I hope you will also accept the defeat because this is what democracy is all about. That coming election will not be like that of April. it will be the real one where you will face the real challenger. prepare well Mr. president

To you Bor orphans, go to hell together with your king and his usseless vission of New sudan. You failed and you will fail, fail, fail and fail again and again. Bringing your asses on the ship of separation cost alot of lives. Do not again call for desaster you idiots.

I say this with no fear or favour. As for the noise makers out there, we know who suffered for our cause and who betrayed us at hard times. CONGRATULATIONS UPON THIS GREAT DECLARATION.

    This is wonderful Mr. President

We all know that, you are true hero and wonderful leader that we ever had. We shall rally behind you and your Vice Dr. Machar.

Since the beginning of our first Anyanya in earlir 1950s, We had a very good foundation for the independent of South Sudan. If not of competition over leadership with blind vission of liberating the all Sudan that happen in late 1980s, than we would have celibrated the independent of South Sudan earlier.

Yet, it is not too late. The right of self determination which came as a result of 1997 Khartoum Peace Agreement, and the Comprehensive Agreement which was signed in 2005 following the merging between two moments, has brought a very significant and fruitful referundum that we had just completed in the last two weeks.

Keep the spirit of uniting the people of South Sudan and God will inspire you more and more.

    Thanks

    Ring of Lord.

    Folks,
I want to respectfully disagree with many of your comments that you have posted on this magnificently great website.
President Kiir is a good man. He has been a genuine leader and true liberator that is the reason why people voted overwhelmingly for him in last year elections. He has done alot of good things during five years interim period.
So, his record speaks very well for itself. For him to seek another term in the office is totally unacceptable.

Folks, it takes years to build trust of your people, but a second to destroy it. President Kiir should peacefully resign and set powerful example for other people to follow. If he chooses to stay in power you guys gonna are see many bad things happening. It is true that Kiir was given mandate by the people of Southern Sudan and of course he has fulfilled that mandate. It is time for him to go and have peace of mind.
So, logically speaking, I do not see the reason why he wanted more times in the power. Otherwise if we not that careful Kiir will be another emerging dicator in the newly born nation.
Folks, do not get me wrong, Iam not insulting President Kiir, but Iam trying to make a point.
I want to see a vibrant, prosperous and stable nation in the South this is the kind of the nation that my Father laid down his precious life and We do not want to squander that opportunity.
May almighty bless you and our leader Kiir.
    Thank you very much.

    Folks,

The history speaks for itself if H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit or somebody else from another party consider contesting for presidency to become the First President of the new “Republic of South Sudan.” H.E. Salva Kirr Mayardit will be the first President of the New Republic. Believe me or not.

He will be the first like Nelson Mandela of South Africa. He will leave or step down after making sure that the foundations of all infrastructure and institutions are in place for the future successor. Let’s prove Khartoum wrong for inability to govern ourselves.

    Dear Fellow Citizens,

Initially, Iam a dinka by tribe, but the truth is that nobody will vote for Salva Kiir this time around. Dr. Riek Machar will be the best candidate for the new nation. Salva Kiir has failed Southerners. He is a corrupted leader, nepotic and tribalistic and ethnic leader and has turned dictatorial and is unworthy to fit to lead again. most of folks did compromised for him for the last six years but not fit at this time. It is time for Dr. Riek Machar. If it is a matter of past event. we have forgotten. Salva Kiir too is a criminal and he has massacred Lt. George Athor ‘s civil population and has raped the women and young ladies. He has marginalized the independent candidates. He has failed to resolve George Athor ‘s insurgency. Dinka Padang from Unity state, Upper Nile and Jonglei plus Nuer and Equatorian plus Dinka Malual will vote for Dr Riek Machar. The rests of rotten teeth like Dinka Bor, Warrap Dinka and some unanimous dinka will go for Salva Kiir because they are the only one benefiting under Salva Kiir. Iam a dinka girl from Upper Nile and I will campaign for Dr. Riek, Wani Igga , Lam Akol, and Joseph Lagu. The rests of Dinka are rubbish candidates. Salva Kiir is a nuissance to me as a victim whose my sisters and brothers were raped and beaten embarrassingly by the SPLA forces. My community has changed support for Salva Kiir. Kiir will not win without Dinka Padang, Nuer, Dinka Malual, Equatoria and other miscellaneous ethnicities.
