Government will face popular protests if it refuses demands for freedom – Mahdi

January 26, 2011 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese former prime minister and leader of the opposition Umma Party Sadiq Al-Mahdi said today that the ruling National Congress Party is facing two choices: to stand besides demands for freedom or to face popular protests.

The leader of the Umma party was speaking on the occasion of the Liberation of Khartoum by his great grandfather Mohamed Ahmed Al-Madi in 1885. The event was attended by thousands of his supporters but also broadcasted by the official radio and a private TV channel.

The governing regime in Sudan has two options: to consider the wills of the people and respond to the demand of a new constitution for the Sudan or retreat on the narrow partisan interests and use repressive methods to curb the protests, said Al-Mahdi on Wednesday.

The opposition leader went to say that Sudanese are eager for freedom. In addition, he stressed that if the ruling party accepts the demands of the Sudanese street, the opposition parties would cooperate with them to implement it

He said that a transitional government involving all the opposition parties can be formed to enforce a national programme.

Al-Madi praised the government for not obstructing the meeting, but said additional measures are needed to create suitable atmosphere including the release of political detainees, refrain from hostile political statements, and not expel Southern Sudanese from the north after secession.

The leader of the Umma party met with the Sudanese President Omer Al-Bashir last week, but his allies in the opposition criticized the meeting considering that the ruling party has no right to select with whom he deals.

The alliance of opposition forces demand to hold a constitutional conference, form a broad transitional government to prepare new elections, lifting political restrictions, ending Darfur crisis.

But the NCP which secured a comfortable win in last April elections dismissed the call saying that it will only cede power if it loses in the next polls after five years.

The Secretary General of the NCP Political Bureau, Mahdi Mandur, today reiterated the rejection of his party to any preconditions by the opposition forces. He also said his party engaged dialogue with the Umma party the Democratic Unionist Party of Mohamed Osman Al-Mirhani.

Al-Mahdi urged Darfur rebels to agree on a joint position among them and demand the signing of a declaration of principles before negotiations with the government.

He also disclosed that the opposition parties will send a delegation to Juba to congratulate the ruling SPLM for the conduct of a successful referendum.

Mr. Sadiq, Your street popular protest you talked of, should not turn down the secession of south sudan, early on you were saying southerner should not break from greater sudan and now you can say southerner should not be expell from north if secession is considered, You did not support Bashir support for the outcome of the referandum result in one way or the other, your political forcast seem to be dim, if you want to be considered as great like you grandfather Mohamed Ahmed Al-Madi then leave your netive words against the southerner freedom.
Sometimes your demand for freedom (which you want unity to previl) is turnising the secession of the south in which president Omar Bashir looked into on hummanitrian base as bad act, southerner alone does not accept any other move to turnised the outcome, avoid voicing nonesense, Work out youself there as Moudukuru (Arabs),
Your protest in-sallah will have no effect to the annoucement of the secession of the south sudan.

AHHHHHHH now it is upto you Mahdi’s!! during your rulling, you were not believing into the South Sudanses right but now you are complaining!!!. Umar Hassan is doing the right thing, let the South be the Country by it’s own we will report you to the ICC Ocampo, all those problems on Bashir are all yours the Shadik Mahdi and other Mahdi’s including you. Ha please, president umar Bashir don,t accept what the Mahdi’s are saying! they are just talking about your party of not knowing the right of the people but they don’t even know the rights of the others too during their ruling.
But Mr president don’t let yorself be confuse and if you let yourself be confuse by your criminals to deny the outcome of the referendum then that mean you accepted yourself to inter into a grave that you don’t like and we will kill you alive. Please don’t foreget that we are still foreward to a revengeance of our heros(Dr John& William Deng and many others) unless you pay for.

This old man deserved no thanks for any efford he is now claiming to be exerting, because he is one of those dishonest sudanese leaders who does not want this country to experience total tranquility. The ex prime minister is not interested in the issues that are been raise by the other political parties and the citizen but rather he wanted to use them for his power struggh.if he didn’t understand the need for freedom of expression, democracy and other good forms of governance as the young prime minister during his time?, how can he perconcept these needs in his present pension age? there is no need for cheating around the sudanese masses, what is likely to happen is that, you never actualise the options you set to the ruling party (NCP) but instead you will go into another secret agreement with them like want you did in last week.
But i assure you, the sudanese masses will be capable of throwing out Al bashir and his friends, and to set a new political structure for this country.
