Power station delays due to fearful northern Sudanese contractors

January 27, 2011 (RUMBEK) – The Lakes state Minister of Physical Infrastructure, Joseph Maker Madit, has said that northern Sudan based electrical technicians are behind delays in the completion of the electricity supply project in Rumbek, the capital of Lakes.
In an interview on Thursday, the minister said that the technicians working on the 3megawatt power plant left Rumbek for northern Sudan after running short of utility poles, which carry the electrical cables.
However, he confirmed that the utility poles are in Wau, the capital of Western Bahr El Ghazal State. He expressed hope that the technicians, who were expecting violence during the referendum, will soon return to Rumbek to complete the work.
“The installation of the generator is complete and we are only left with the networks. Unfortunately we ran short of poles, The contactors all came from Khartoum and they were fearing returning to the South, now the referendum is over, they will come back and the work will be completed – even though we are independent state, all foreigners will be protected by government,” said Madit.
Madit added that the electricity project was scheduled to be completed by December 2010, but the remaining works require a maximum period of two months. He also said that besides the installation of the remaining utility poles, more transformers are to be ferried from the capital of South Sudan, Juba.
“We are lucky, we have got three megawatts of power. The intention is to have 24-hour power. We would wish everybody, even those living in huts to have electricity,” said Madit.
The Minister further revealed that the two-generator power plant will cover Rumbek, extending service to an area of about 450 miles2. He also remarked that the supply of electricity will help a great deal in conservation of forests, explaining that the need of charcoal by town dwellers has led to an increase in deforestation.
The completion of the electricity project was one of the promises of the present Lakes state government during their political campaign leading up to the April 2010 Sudan general elections.
This power station is a part of the government of an Egyptian donation in 2008, to the Government of Southern Sudan.
