Bashir fires head of Khartoum university
January 30, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir on Sunday issued a decree sacking the University of Khartoum’s head, Professor Mustafa Idriss Al-Bashir, effective immediately.
Sources speaking to Sudan Tribune speculated that public criticism directed by Professor Al-Bashir to the government on lack of support to universities may have led to his dismissal.
However, others point out that he has slammed a presidential decision taking away land belonging to the University of Khartoum and giving it to the Student Support Fund. He protested it with president Bashir but his grievances were ignored.
Many Sudanese nowadays speak with bitterness over the deteriorating academic standing of the university which used to be the most prestigious in the country and Africa, graduating highly qualified students in all disciplines many of whom migrated to newborn Arab Gulf States.
Observers blame this on decreased funding, government interference and educational policies which led to lowering standards of admission to the university which was founded in 1902.

I agree with you bro, the Academic of north Sudan universities is moving down ward each & everyday, sacking the Chairman of the university will not help the suituation in north politically & academically,but i advise the president to release the chairman.

The more “Islamic” northern Sudan becomes, the more paranoid, anti-education and generally moribund it will become. Egypt is heading for the dark ages and I hope the Sudanese can see clearly what they DON’T want for Sudan. Even with the end of the CPA, I hope you will fight for secularization and not let misplaced national and religious enthusiasm close down your minds. (Some of the rhetoric coming from the streets of Cairo in news reports is frightening; it looks as if the Muslim Brotherhood has a lot of influence. Many are blaming the West and even Israel for their problems!)
