Lakes state and Unity state deal to supply fuel and foodstuffs to one another

By Manyang Mayom

February 2, 2011 (RUMBEK) – The governments of Lakes state and Unity state have agreed to collaborate in the supply of basic foodstuffs and fuel following the dramatic rise in local prices across South Sudan.

Speaking to press in his office, governor of Lakes, Chol Tong Mayay, said that the two states have agreed to help each other get basic commodities, a collaboration that will see Unity supply fuel to Lakes while foodstuffs, mainly from East Africa, which will flow into Unity through Lakes.

Mayay appealed to those concerned in the fuel trade to begin getting their fuel supplies from Unity, the capital of Bentiu, adding that the roads connecting Rumbek and Bentiu are being worked on and the bridges now constructed make it passable throughout the year.

“I have made contact with governor of unity state, so that they will supply us with fuel. The road is good and Ayat Company is doing roads and bridges along Maper – Unity state also has a food shortage, so Unity state will get foodstuffs from us because the other border, with the North, is going to be closed. We are asking those who are trading on fuel to get their fuel in Unity state and other states could get it from Lakes”, said Mayay

Nevertheless, this week Mayay issued a decree banning what he described as “illegal tax collectors”, detailing officers and institutions implicated, among them, the police at checkpoints, some public security officers, RAM Company (a Sudanese oil field service company), and some of the traffic police.

He appealed to the relevant authorities in the Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) to avail US dollars to enable traders to import goods from East Africa, explaining that South Sudan does not have manufacturing industries as yet.

He went on to suggest that GoSS agrees to the use of Kenyan and Ugandan currencies as it did during the time of war, explaining that the availability of foreign currency will help traders to restock their shops and stabilise prices in the market, during this time of transition.

“I have already issued a declaration banning all illegal tax collectors. Of course the other plan will be to make dollars available to traders to get goods from neighbouring countries; it will help us to reduce prices,” said Mayay.

The prices of goods in many parts of South Sudan have rocketed and ordinary citizens are concerned about their welfare if the situation persists.

This is An agreement between a lion and a hyena.
The lion(lake state) will loss to the mostly oil dependent
unity state. It is better the unity state is allowed to cultivate their lands instead of supplying them with lake state foodstuffs.

I don’t see the need of Unity State importing food from Lake, our farmers have enough to provide us.If we want East African food or any other stuff, we have river transport goods can be put into steamers from Juba and be offloaded from Adok.Lake State is not a good neighbor they ‘re really very hostile people.I know the goods brought from Khartoum to Lake ‘re passing through Unity and no taxes being levied to them, now if a person brought goods through Lake State a lot of taxes ‘ll be levied, the governor claimed to banned all those people who levied taxes illegally but that’s not true.
We can give you fuel but we don’t want your food or whatever you want to export to us.

    Dear fictious men of the Country;
Note that this where the arabs do not trust Southerners in area of Governing themselves. We are to an independent of South Sudan and yet our minds are filled with tribal thoughts and practices.

How long will you guys be thinking of building relationships and promoting the development if hatred occupied your volume of minds and hearts? I thought your commentary should discourage import of foodstuff from neighbouring countries via Lakes State and encourage every state to produce their oodstuff locally so that they all boost their local economy and benefit from each other.

This is time to think on how to prove to the world that it is arab who planted hatred and divide the Southerners through restrictions from all sources of Social lives. (Restriction from trade, Education, Health and Agriculture etc)

Your names here in this websites made me call you fictious men of the Country.

I want you to think like southerners and be mindful about the future of South Sudan to thrive to system of Good Governance.

The fact remain that the police in many roads blocks and tax collectors will not abide by the Decree of the Governor or maybe the President to stop the collection of taxes. Corruption has become a culture and this is driven by the nature of self actualisation of the Constitutional post holders. The poor could not just abandon the practice where at the end of the day go home with some little cash for tomorrow kilo of meat and vegeatbles. Our State Government is lack monitoring and follow up mechanism. Such collections of taxes may still exist.

So my dear brothers let us see our challenges ahead because we need to change the practice and do what we say instead of say and not doing it.

Only to the article,Gatloth Gai -Bentiu.

I don`t think this process of trading btn Lake and Unity will reach its expectation stage, unless security is guarantee.

Thisis a very move that never happen since the creature that the southern sudan states of Lake and Unity have share a communication network like that maram road to be used for trading and passagers from Juba via Rumbek Bentiu via Rumbek to juba. I am emphesising in it rather, however the only challenge is the security.

This two states are inhabited by two catlle keepers the Dinka and Nuer who are the best relative and enemies at the same time.

That mean robbey and abush on the pass-by vehicles will be very common.

    Regards.
