Lakes state governor: we need more judges to pursue cases in court

By Manyang Mayom

February 3, 2011 (RUMBEK) – The government of Lakes state has set free 37 inmate children who were charged with involvement in cases of theft and disputes with their peers. The decision to set the children free was made by Lakes governor, Chol Tong Mayay, after consultations with judges in Lakes. The children who were released from jail were all under the age requirements of international human rights standards.

The children had been unlawfully arrested by their relatives and traders in markets.

Speaking to the press, Mabor Mayen Wol, Lakes state minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement Agencies, said that Lakes state prisons are open for human rights monitoring.

Mayen confirmed prison reports saying that, “according to the figures of our last report, in Rumbek central prison, we found that we have 69 murder cases and 45 other cases, making a total of 114”.

Mayen added that Lakes state is overwhelmed by a lack of judges, which are urgently required to settle cases.

“My last word is that I would like to assure everybody that the government of Lakes state is taking serious care – prisoners should not be treated badly. We are also checking from time to time for irregularity – prisoners need to be treated with humanity”, said Mayen.

In March 2010, during the governorship of Lakes by Telar Ring Deng, now presidential advisor on legal affairs, a decree was issued, closing down all special courts. Mayay has re-issued the appointment of special court to settle cases urgently, but the process is still slow.

Where will you get judges Mr. Governor when a teacher is the lowest paid employee in your government? Think creatively more than that!

Firstly, I lauded and I still uphold the decision by Hon. Justice Telar Ring Deng to abolish the ‘special courts’ because more often than not, their rulings clash with the national constitution and are rife with individuals’ rights violations. For example, is it reasonable that all relatives of a criminal should be arrested when the police(security) can not find the criminal even though the relatives do not support the criminal?

I’m purely from Lakes State. Why are children put in jail? Is the Lakes State government solving anything by imprisoning children? How about making schools ‘homely’ enough for them? So the accusation is that they were caught stealing. Did they go stealing because they are ‘borne thieves’ or because they got free time and did what children do, ‘become mischievous’.

Do not cry about lack of judges. you will not need judges if there is better schooling for children. If there is better schooling for children, then there will be NO CHILDREN IN JAIL. Children should not be in jail to begin with, because it is ILLEGAL. Motivate the teachers by paying them well. Then the teachers will keep the children in school and educate them.

Teachers are important. Treat them well. Look around and see for yourself. Children of Teachers do no go bad. Only children of politicians and pastors and businessmen go bad. Appreciate them and all will be well.
