February 9, 2011 (JUBA) – Armed youth from the Murle community in the volatile Jonglei state have carried out deadly coordinated surprise attacks on remote villages of Lou-Nuer community as South Sudan moves towards independence from the North following the overwhelming vote for secession which was officially announced on February 7.
Hundreds of so-called SPLM [Sudan People’s Liberation Movement] youth armed by the Jonglei state authority, under the supervision of Brig. Gen. Joshua Kony, to fight the rebelled former SPLA General George Athor Deng, were suspected to have turned their guns against the vulnerable Lou-Nuer civilian population, according to officials.
A delegation of senior officials and intellectuals from Lou-Nuer led by the minister of Information in the Government of Southern Sudan, Barnaba Marial Benjamin, and the deputy Governor of Jonglei state, Hussein Mar Nyuot, held talks with the leadership of the government in Juba on Wednesday to find ways of providing security to the populations while avoiding any retaliatory attacks.
Also other Murle armed youth of Kongor section of Nanam River were also confirmed to have taken part in the offensive, according to Uror county commissioner Tut Puok Nyang, in a statement he issued on Southern Sudan TV in Juba.
In the surprise attack, several heads of cattle were stolen during the Sunday attack in Pamai village where a chief and his deputy and several cattle-keepers lost their lives while others were seriously wounded.
Nyang told the press in Juba that about 800 cattle were stolen by the rustlers.
“In a rescue attempt, the chief, his deputy and several others were gunned down. The attack was confirmed to have been carried out by Murle youth of Kongor section of Nanam River”, he said.
“The youth who were heavily armed started roaming the Lou counties of Uror, Akobo and Nyirol in November 2010 where they stole cattle, killed people and abducted children from mostly disarmed populations”.
At the same press conference, the Akobo county commissioner Goi Jooyul condemned the attack, which is the first of its kind in the state, following the referendum on independence.
He said that 700 heads of cattle were stolen at Pak village in an attack that left two people dead.
“Patueat village lost 1,000 cows and three men were killed on January 25 while two other men were killed and a similar number of children abducted in Bong Payam of Akobo County”, said Jooyul.
The two commissioners have called upon the government of South Sudan to intervene by deploying the police to protect the civilians as well as disarming the marauding Murle youth roaming Jonglei’s counties.
Officials fear that the resumption of inter-communal conflicts may reintroduce a cycle of violence in Jonglei; a state well known for insecurity between communities and rebelled army officers such as former SPLA general George Athor Deng and David Yauyau.

It is very unfortunate that Governor Kuol Manyang Juuk of Jonglei state has gone to the extent of forming militia group in the name of this very good political party (SPLM).
I assume that he has the knowledge of such armed youth from the SPLM political party because this thing cannot happen without his knowledge or approval.
Now this SPLM Murle heavily armed youth groups by Kuol Manyang are let loose like wild dogs and roaming Lou-Nuer areas. A warning though! Soon these armed Murle SPLM youth may backfire on Kuol Manyang Juuk.
Why would a state form a militia in the name of this precious party called SPLM? Where is SPLA army to fight George Athor instead of arming a political party youth who are supposed to do other peaceful mobilizations for development?
The GOSS/SPLM leadership in Juba should immediately order Kuol Manyang to disarm all those heavily armed SPLM youths and leave the provision of security to the police and SPLA.
We don’t need a party militia that turns against the very civilian populations they were supposed to protect.
And besides, our constitution doesn’t allow formation of militia forces in the name of party youths.
Again, why did the fighting resume with George Athor? I thought a ceasefire was signed with him and people were very happy that the South was coming together.
Please bring back General George Athor and General David Yauyau plus those of General Gabriel Tanginya (whose forces have taken over SAF bases in Upper Nile) and Colonel Gatluak Gai. We need peace, unity and stability after the referendum. Stop mixing personal hatreds with politics and security of the nation.
Last but not least, I would want to warn those of Murle community not to rush by inviting the fulfillment of Ngundeng’s prophecy on them.
“Jebe yiene Bor Goak liepe ni looc, ca bi ngoal ben, ta ke laat ti laate kone Marol.”
“Murle and Bor (South), wait for me while you are pinned down. I will not come soon, because I have issues to settle first with Jallaba.”
That prophecy of Ngundeng may come now that the issues with Jallaba are finally settled by the split of the country as he predicted.

They want to use Nuer Generals to killed George Athor, so that the could solidified their Non- existent support among Padang Dinka and Northern Bargazhel population.I would urge Generals Bol Kong & Peter Gatdet Yaka or any other Nuer General to be used by these two thugs. Now, it’s the same theing they’re doing with arming Murle youth so, that Nuer wilk be in the same situation. I don’t know why our Vice-president doesn’t see this type of tricks. Lou Nuer & Jikany Nuers have lost 91% their officers murdered in cold blood in Equatoria in the early ’90s because of Kuol Manyany, Gier Chuang, even George Athor killed some of the officers sent by Nyuon to his area during that period. That was the primary reason William Nyuon upon his returned from Peace talks he led in Abuja/Nigeria Decided to parted with Garang and could not forgive Kuol even if he still alive today.

The Nuer man who refused to be target by Ngundeng’s salves pointed out that. Ngundeng had no father or mother but the Devil who came out in the River Nile in a form of fish, when the Nuer boys want for fishing. They fish for so many hours and they caught nothing, when the boys get tied and ready to go back home. One of them told other guys that there was a fish ate his hook lastly, the boy convinced other friends to tried one more time! The Snake Ngundeng light it body and become bright as well as electricity light. They ran home and they spread the news to the community, when the Nuer elders came to the place where Ngundeng was pulled. It was still there as snake with it light. People gather together around it and started asking question how did this happen? The Snake Ngundeng changed into human being and told people not to run away. All of them were shocking and scary to death except Human Ngundeng who perform such witchcraft. things “Come down, come down now!” The Human Ngundeng said. Who are you? The Nuer elders asked him. I am Nyajok_ which mean woman devil! The Human Ngundeng answer! She knew her own physical appearance as she is a hermaphrodite. (A person with both the organs of a man and a woman) Wow!
