Jonglei: One person killed and a child abducted by gunmen

February 14, 2011 (BOR) – A group of unknown gunmen in military uniform launched an attack at Makuach village in Bor county, killing a woman and abducting a three year old girl on 13 February.
The abducted child, Akur Malual Maguek who was born in September 2008, is a granddaughter to Maguek Agot Bior, whose wife was shot dead by the attackers.
Bior is a resident of Makuach payam (district), whose cows have been rescued from rustlers from the Murle ethnic group four times last year, has now lost both his wife and the granddaughter.
The mother to the abducted child, Nyancher Kuol Duom, described the attack to Sudan Tribune:
“We were awake when they came and pushed the door three times but it was hard to break. They came behind the house and whispered amongst themselves before they set the house on fire. We cried for help but nobody came. The house was about to collapse when we opened the door and four gunmen rushed in by force: two men seized two babies of six to nine months but threw them back to us. They rushed behind the beds where my mother and daughter were hiding and grabbed the child. My mother resisted but they dragged her toward the door where she was shot dead and we all fled the fire”.
There is a long history of conflict between the Murle, Luo-Nuer, Anuak and Dinka Bor in the region.
Maguek Agot, owner of the home who was sleeping in a separate house, gave an account of what he had lost in the burning of the house:
“We lost SDG8,000 [US$3,000], clothes, three beds, four mattresses, two 50kg sacks of sorghum and un-threshed sorghum.”
The commissioner of Bor county, Maker Lual, condemned the attack but did not accuse a specific tribe or group for the attack.
Maker also said he has contacted South Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Committee (SSRRC) through Civil Administrator (CA) of Makuach payam (district), Mabil Duot Jok to ask for assistance for the people affected.

It is unfortunate that the SPLA uniform is being abused by those Murle thugs. Were they part of those trained by Kuol Manyang as SPLM armed youth?

If that amount is true to had been possessed by the family whose hut is burnt, then Jonglei state government should compensate for at least half of the loss.
But I doubt that it is just a away of asking for compensation because 3000 dollars cannot be kept in that small grass hut by that poor family in the rural village.

Murle do not listen until they see denger.
I think Bor people should be re-armed if GOSS does not want to disarm Murle and set up police posts in their areas to control these merciless criminals from taking off from Murle areas to other areas like Bor, Lou Nuer, Jie and Anyuak.

I only belamed the government of the south,because they have failed in everythings.if the government was concern for the security of it’s citizens and the unity for the south,then they should not let this happen over and over,they should have done something to stop the killing of those innocents civilians,and don’t forget them easily,those are the people who have voted for the freedom of the southerners and this new nation that you’re fatting up your bellies.the killing within the state of Jonglei is deterioting itself continually over and over and no one dare to take some immidiate action about it.what a shame on you Goss?

And boasting about security of the state when you’re not the one providing it is beyond contempt. Bol Koang is not your police nor Tanginye, they’re representing the Army (which is yet to be transformed into a National & professional force. but notheless, is capable of providing a relative level of stability to civilians, provided its used properly.

Some does not read the whole text of the story and jump directly to comments. Firsunderstand the story and give vital coment.
The comments has become more of saying DINKA, Failed governor, as you mentioned.
Let’s look at the lost!
The structure of the house does not mean money. am meaning if one has hut, it doesn’t mean he/she may not keep bulky some of money.
Money can be stolen and kept in huts. May be those are stolen money from the GoSS, The family head need to be investigated the wayfrom of that money, with evidence.
our leaders are corrupt, they steal public funds and keep them any where (may be these are stolen money).
Do not anly give comments because you want to contribute but look at the angle of the story.

t is unfortunately to take others people children every day. People have to realize that, every animal protecting their young one from danger. You neither expecting others people to protect your love one nor the government because Government is for all people even the criminal.
What I try to say is our Dinka Bor cried for killing and abduction of children by Murle people before the movement, through the movement, and now after the movement. Please Dinka Bor folks don’t rely on Government heavily to protect you, protect yourselves. It take man to man to settle their cases through confrontation, and if is not settle, keep fighting even though end up to the hell. We all read biology, that every living things can adopting an environment it living into, if it is hostile, be hostile to protect being kill or if it is healthy environment adopting it as it is being healthy too.
How long the Government gonna protect Dinka Bor from Nuer and Murle criminals? And who gonna protecting Nuer and Murle from Dinka Bor and others surrounding tribe criminals?.
Dinka Bor please if Murle like your chirdren so much like that, you too have to like Murle children. Abduct them and make them your own too, they are beautiful good human being and strong people. There is no way it can make sense national army be draw in the tribal s criminal fight.

Jonglei has all along been a problem in South Sudan followed by Unity State specifically Nuer who live in at Southern part of Unity State.Basically, northern part of Unity State which comprises two counties of Pariang & Abiemnhom where 80% of the Nile blend oil is produced is Dinka,these people of Panaru & Alor are peaceful people.Take it from me,the above mentioned States will continue to destablise the South.
