February 16, 2011 (JUBA) – Leaders of political parties at a meeting in Juba have unanimously agreed that the new state to be created in the region will be be called the Republic of South Sudan (RoSS).
The naming receive the agreement of all the political forces in the South – due to become independent after a referendum in January – including the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).
All the political parties in the semi-autonomous region converged in Juba on Wednesday to discuss the process of transition in the emerging independent state after the overwhelming vote for secession from North Sudan in the January’s referendum.
During the opening of the political parties leadership forum chaired by South Sudan president and SPLM chairman, Salva Kiir Mayardit, the leaders of the parties endorsed a report presented by the chairman of the Southern Sudan 2011 Taskforce, Riek Machar Teny, the regions vice president, which outlined the role being played by the body that serves as the government’s think-tank on the referendum, post-referendum issues and the future governance of the soon-to-be-independent South Sudan.
This meeting follows the all parties’ conference held in Juba in October 2010.
In a press statement issued after the meeting, Machar said representatives of political parties, civil society organizations and faith-based groups would be included in the membership of the taskforce and contribute to resolutions of challenges ahead.
He announced that the Wednesday meeting endorsed the name of the new country and added that the political parties will on Thursday discuss the type of flag and name of the currency for the independent state.
The vice president also added that the issue of including the political parties in the technical committee on constitutional review will also be discussed, among other issues in the process of transition.
In a separate press conference on Wednesday, the minister of Peace and CPA Implementation, Pagan Amum, who also serves as the SPLM’s secretary general, said that the emerging independent state will be formed on inclusivity of all the political parties in order to achieve a smooth transition.
He said the SPLM’s political bureau, the highest political body of the party, also approved the name of the Republic of South Sudan for the new state on Monday.
Amum also added that the party preferred the SPLM flag, which has already been serving as an interim flag for the Government of Southern Sudan, to remain as the national flag of the new independent state. It will however be subjected to endorsement by all the political parties and after which the political decision will be presented to the parliament for further deliberations and final endorsement.

How could your one-way road of united Sudan vision turn around to achieve independence of the South without putting mechanism to turn it around?
The new Sudan vision was just to change the system within a united Sudan, whether on united socialism as was in the SPLM/A manifesto of 1983-1994, or on secular united Sudan from 1994-2005. Now how could such a vision turn around to independence of the South?
My friend, the only mechanism that turned the ship around was the self-determination for the people of South Sudan. This was introduced or championed in 1991 in the SPLM/A. It was signed in Khartoum Peace Agreement for the first time in 1997. It was enshrined in the Sudan National Constitituion for the first time in the history of Sudan in 1998. Then it was copied to CPA and interim national constitution in 2005.
So, the vision of united new Sudan did not give room for the people of South Sudan or Abyei to have a referendum in which they would decide whether the country would remain united on the basis of that new vision or would still want to secede. That option was not there, my friend, and you know it. So why lie now that somebody brought to you self-determination and you shamelessly claim that it was part of your one-way vision of unity of Sudan?

I have never heard or seen a Government in any part of this world we live in,where over 200 innocent civilians lives have been lost and thousands are still missing as i write this, but the Government officials are going about their business as usual. not even a single day of mourning is declared for the dead. This tell me two things that the politicians in Juba are either don’t care about the citizens lives unless only when one of their own died or assassinated( like the Late Minister like, late Samson Kwaje and Lemi, God bless their soul) or South Sudan is about implode into uncontrollable chaotic scene.
Either way it’s unsettling situation we(the ordinary citizens of this soon to be state)have found ourselves in.

Don’t lie in the name of late John Garang. He died a unionist. Rebecca Nyandeng, his widow, confessed to that unless you don’t read her usual statements. The recent one is now on gurtong.com website. She said Garang’s position was always around unity of Sudan and he managed to convince her to follow the vision of keeping Sudan united.
And also Lual Achuek, minister of finance in Khartoum, also said Garang was a unionist.
Now if Garang could not whisper into the ears of his closest relatives about his real intentions, then from where do you the other distant disciples find the courage to guess that he was using a strategy to bring independence of the South. I challenge you to convince me how?

My suggestion would be the Flag has to remain as it is.
The reason why SPLA Flag/SPLM will not change is because the people from the SPLA/SPLM movement were demanding to change everything including Sudan Flag which was reflicted ISlamic Ideas while, they found Black people in Sudan and the rules in the Sudan were about to be change. Now after NCP refusal for Sharia law to be change which have reuslt with the exchange of referendum for New State then, the Southern Sudan has to keep that Flag, because this is the Flag that led many SPLA struggles and dies in the name of New Sudan nation.The Green in Flag must be real Green and the Top Black colour in the Flag must also be too drak black as the skinns of Southern Sudanese are too drakers black.
Second to that, if the North Sudan are willingly backing to what they call it dinar currency then, the Southern Sudan has to keep Pound continues but it got to have a valuable belief just like the Ethiopia currency they don’t change whoever, or who came to power and leading nation, the currency must remain unchangable which is a very good thing and I think the Southern Sudanese Jurisdiction must have to mention this in the constitutional. Also putting president in the currency and later the other president have to change and put his own image is the bad thing Southern Sudanese must avoid early now.
The people are the only can decide who was the best person who did the good things for the nation and for example, Dr. John Garang de Mabior would be okay if the people want to put his image in the currency. Kenya and Uganda have been using Shillings however, Southern Sudanese must not use same Shillings even if Southern Sudan become one of the East Africa Sub-regions, you guys have to find something different if you don’t like to keep Pound in the place then, why not keeping the Pound as Southern Sudan Pound or New Sudan Pound and it will a good Idea to do so base on what is the best way to make sure the New currency are valuable and workable and people love it.
For the name of government as people already rushing to name the Republic of Southern Sudan. I belief there is no question even if the people have chosen New Sudan nation it could still be name as the Republic of the New Sudan [RNS] and it will work very good too. There is nothing wrong on the Idea of naming New Sudan nation, because it will combining none Southerners Sudanese and Southern Sudan together and will make strong nation why not GOSS take that name.?
Thirdly. I think the Southern Sudan leaders have failed to meet the political achievement in term of South Kordofan State and the South Blue Nile State. There are many letters that, have been sent to GOSS leadership and I am not a liberty to explain everythings again to them. The political achievement and the Win-winning strategic letters were been sending to the GOSS for good suggestion they can take unfortunately, there is no signs so far which is bad.
Although your discussion for parties would not be mentioning why people creating more parties for what.? Basically, this is so a shameful to all Africa and particular, this Southerners Sudanese people because when others nation hearing there are about 24 parties then, it shown that our people are more and more dumb otherwise, there was no need for Southern Sudanese politicians to creates nonesense that, make destruction to the New nation and the citizens. My suggestion on this issue is that, I have been consistently telling Southern Sudanese’s politicians to have only two parties or three parties in the young nation which it will appearing to be born by July9,2011. It is very important that, Southern Sudanese people must take this advise from me seriously.

I have asked all of you the blind defenders of so-called New Sudan Vision to tell me how could your vision bring about the independence of South Sudan without the self-determination of Dr. Riek Machar and Dr. Lam Akol.
None of you has the courage to explain and convince me on how the strategy of your vision which was to keep Sudan united could turn around to divide it without self-determination of 1991.
Because all the unionists were simply blind supporters without knowing where they were being led to by John Garang, they just assumed that there was something called strategy, but on what, they couldn’t understand.
I know nobody will come out clearly to explain to me how the vision brought independence of South Sudan because we all know it was a lost vision, founded on keeping unity of Sudan, and far from independence of the South Sudan.

It’s okay to be a Republican of South South but the name Republican Regime have been used and we get nothing out of it. It will be better to have something else then what we had in passed.
The word Republic have been misse used instead of publices to have voices in their Government.

Now that we are all in one boat arguing on how to eat in the plate of our new independent country brought by the self-determination vision, then we can temporarily accept many things.
The biggest issue in my mind was how to destroy the sell-out vision of keeping Sudan united at the expense of the people of South Sudan.
Alas! Through the wise strategy it is now over. The new Sudan vision is confirmed dead in the South and the self-determination vision has finally prevailed and the country has split into two and may be more…
What a mother of all the strategies!
Every one can now join the independent Sudan even those that fought against it and killed those of Samuel Gai Tut who were separatists pursuing the independence of South Sudan.
Well, we can temporarily use the current SPLM flag if the SPLM will abandon it for South Sudan, and then we can change it later.
We can also use South Sudan Pound for time being and change it to Nilo in the near future.
We can now also use the name Republic of South Sudan (ROSS) and change it later to whatever name we may see fit.
Let us put the names and flag to the parliament and use them for now after their approval. We can change them after independence.
The biggest issue is achieving independence through 1991’s self-determination.
The rest are just decorations for celebration!!!!!!!!!!

allow me to passed my opinion to whoever is going to attend that technical committee who will sit to discuss and talk on the issue of national flag and currency.
dear comrades, i think the nation flag should not be design in self-fish ways, am of view that it shuold be inclusive flag that should also reflect the bloodsheds, the land, the nature of people etc.
for the currency it should of good quality that can get international value otherwise its also need to have symbols of cultures, land, struggle etc.
for those who are going to review the constitution, my only opinion is that, the community shuold be consult to accept anything that is worth necessary to be include in the national documents, otherwise its gona be big challenge if you will fugite around fake doucment that we gona dishonor in near future.
