South Sudanese newspaper office raided

February 21, 2011 (JUBA) – The Citizen newspaper claims its Juba office was raided in Sunday night by four security men in plain
clothes according to its Monday edition.

The security operatives also arrested a driver, identified as Madeng Kout, on Sunday – he is still missing.

“There is nothing that may have provoked the disapproval of the security,” says Nhial Bol, The Citizen Editor-in-chief in his paper.

Established in 2005 in Khartoum, The Citizen is now a South Sudan based English language newspaper that began printing in Juba in January 2011. The daily as many other media outlets suffered from censorship imposed by Sudanese security apparatus.

“The incident is a direct attack on freedom of expression,” said Nhial.

It remains unclear what warranted the raids on The Citizen office, Sources within the paper suggest that an editorial column attracted attention of the ministry of internal affairs last week.

It is alleged that a team of advisors from the ministry was unhappy about the column’s critique of the police service which suggested they were not capable of keeping order.

Newspapers or other form of news outlet are not there to please the leaders rather than to tell the public about what happened/happening or what going to happen.

It is stupid to raid newspaper center because you are not please with what they reporters said or doing. It will be a good idea for South Sudanese to stand with the media or newspaper because we don’t want the GOSS to control the media. this is a form of overstepping over the freedom of press. If the Citizen Newspaper has broken the law, then why don’t you take them court instead? we don’t want stubborn and angry leaders who lead through retaliation.

This stupid barbaric acts are to stop immediately, we are not with Khartoum government anymore where they use to raid media at night. The stupid minister of interior Gier Chuang needs to pull his stupid acts together and act wise or we will take up arms.

Salva Kiir, you need to change this Guy, He is not good for our security at all. why is public freedom being attack? Media is free and fare in reporting and so, there is no need for such actions. This is provoking public trust. We don’t have kings in Southern Sudan neither do we need one. we are all the same.
Watch out!! Watch your actions or citizens revolts is coming soon!

It is very unfortunate that the “Norther Sudan negative attitude towaords the media has creeped into the New State !
We have a say that goes , ” A toothles man often feels guilty on hearing a mention of a bone ”
If it is true that the ministry of internal affairs is behind this raid, then am sorry ! These must be people who only want to tarnish the fame of HE Gier who has brought a great change to the ministry of Internal affairs . However, Gier should note that great work done after a long struggle, can easily come to its nkees in only one second ! Gier for sure is capable but the Police Boss Achuil is completely incapable and so, for Gier to maintain his fame, he MUST immedietley replace Achuil ! What is Achuil doing about the money extorters in Juba town ? what is he doing about police men who rob people with impunity in Juba ? what answer has he given to SSLA about the killings in Malakal ? what about the land grabers? what is he doing about these ? The Police Cap is just TOO large for Achuil’s head ! and he is just a round peg in squared hole ! Highly placed BUT less performing ! Please leave our media alone !

The only way to get those guys to behave themselves never stop writing the truth about them, I said the truth, don’t go and drink bear and start writing rubbish about them they will always treat your office that way. They are acting like gangsters corrupted unqualified officials they don’t know how to run offices.Forgive them they spend most of there times in bush they don’t even know what is call democracy or freedom of expression. I wonder if they know what century we are living in. We can change all that, there for I want you to support me New Generation in next election put your hand in my hand so we can work together to bring that change our new country may need. I will run for presidency in next election. Under my leadership there will be really freedom of expression you write leis about me I can still sue you in court of law you proof it, but I will never take the law at my hand just because I am president you should go to jail, that one will not work in this century which world are getting smaller day by day. When you are in sport light every eyes is on you they should know that.

i am condemning such activities in the south, all media houses should have freedom of expression.
citizen newspaper is the only newspaper operation in south, if we keep provoking the staff of citizen, we are trying to close it.

Security, be aware of what is taking place in the arab world that is ‘democracy’ and it may happen in any country.
Now a days to change rulling system is very simple so take care with people.
