South Sudan is yet to decide on its official Independence Day – Machar

March 2, 2011 (JUBA) – South Sudan, which voted in the January’s referendum to break away from the rest of Sudan after 55 years of civil war, is yet to decide on its official Independence Day, says the Vice President of the region, Riek Machar.

The people of South Sudan voted overwhelmingly for independence by 98.83% in an internationally monitored referendum which was provided for in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), signed in January 2005 between the government of Sudan led by the National Congress Party (NCP) and the former rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).

The interim constitution provides that the six year interim period commences on 9 July 2005. Recently, it was said by different officials from the NCP and the SPLM that the Republic of South Sudan will be declared on 9 July 2011.

However, the Sudanese parliament terminated the membership of Southern Sudan MPs saying the sessions of the two chambers will resume next April without their participation. The two peace partners have yet to finalize talks on a series of pending issues related to Abyei, border demarcation, national debt, and other matters.

SLM leading member Yasir Arman termed the decision as “a coup from the NCP against the constitution,” adding “The constitution should govern the period until July 9 and more surprisingly the NCP did not consult the SPLM.”

Machar said South Sudan is already an independent state by the declared vote of the people in that referendum, which he said was supreme over any other decision or law in the process of choosing a final destiny in the self-determination’s exercise. What will happen on July 9, he added, will be mere formalities ending the six years of interim period and celebrating the already achieved independence.

The Vice President earlier explained that the debate would now center on whether to decide on an official Independence Day based on the revolutionary spirit that sparked various struggles for 55 years, or based on the final decision of the people of South Sudan who chose independence over unity as their final destiny.

“If the day would be decided based on the revolutionary spirit,” he said, “there would be at least three different dates to choose from. These would include 15th June [1955], which he said initially resulted to the day of 18th August [1955] of Torit revolt that later on gave birth to Anya-Nya I struggle”.

Another revolutionary day, he added, was 16th May [1983] which gave birth to the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLM/SPLA), when the forces under the command of late Kerubino Kwanyin Bol rebelled from Bor town.

And if the decision about Independence Day will be based on the people’s decision to vote for independence, Machar explained that January 30, [2011], or February 7, [2011], would be the ideal dates to choose from.

The first initial results of the referendum were announced on January 30 in Juba while the final results, which exactly confirmed the first initial results, were announced on February 7, in Khartoum.

The issue of Independence Day like the rest on the new state’s flag, national anthem, coat-of-arms, etc., shall end up in the parliament for final endorsement after further deliberations.

MR. Vice President: Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon

You’re absolutely right that South Sudan is already an independent entity(State). And that July 9 is mere formality of an already achieved independence.

I do however, disagree of choosing any revolutionary dates over January 30 or February 7, those are two important dates in South Sudan history, since it was the people will that decided her destiny rather than through any other means(i.e force).

The dates of June 15, August 18 1955(Torit)Led by General Tawfeng & Lagu respectively June, 1975(Akobo)Led by Vincent Kuany & Bol Kur respectively and May 16, 1983(Bor, Ayod)Led by Kerbuno Kuayin & William Nyuon Bany Respectively Revolts should be preserved to be called Revolutionaries & Heroes Day.

January 30 or February 7, one of this dates Should be preserved to our independence day date.

They said if two people passed by and told you, you don’t have a head touch it maybe they are right bro.
I don’t know why people took their times to answer you Mr Dinka.
Without you holding on tribalism we will never find out where is the mistakes in our society to correct it. You are the mistake and there is many of you out there in society and new country South Sudan need to be correct.
Dinka dominated SPLA/M you are right, but many of them are just like you, they don’t get it. SPLM/A is full of your kind thats why our young people civilians are suffering at hands of brainless majority. Your alike majority in SPLA/M created problems which they don’t know how to solve it and their civilian are paying for it. You should know SPLA fought for Sudan not south Sudan and that was vision of Garang when he took over SPLA and that was what created misunderstood between our VP today and Garang then they started killing each other at end he Garang come back to our VP thats was the way things went between two men, it didn’t took long time after their unity to set on table with Jallaba for peaceful negotiation until they signed CPA. Peace in south Sudan didn’t came by war your dinka dominate SPLA didn’t liberate its self so they can Liberate us. War couldn’t bring us our country and it will not bring us peace in south Sudan. Your Dinka dominate SPLA/M should deal with your Dinka rebel leader Athor by peaceful negotiation not by war, but lack of clearing understand tribalism and leadership in Dinka dominate SPLM only Dinka civilian are paying the cost. Try to understand tribalism will bring more distraction in South Sudan people in South been testing peace for last six years after long years war is not a good thing? why preaching hate?

    Dear All,

See this funny man called Riak Machar, he mentioned the beginning of SPLM/SPLA and sacrifice of all SPLM dose in the moment but he forgot his rebellion time of 1991, My predicaments to all these leaders, they want to rule by mistake rather than light away forward. In others state like WARRAP and Lakes state there is Animals right but no Human right and that is why tribal fighting has been going on for a quite number of years, So we need to call all political forces to work for Human right rather than animals right in our new Country.

It has been said, “A prophet has honour except/in his own home” Jesus says this when his family and acquaintances in his home town of Nazareth reject his teachings (Mark 6:4).

All humans, in virtue of their dignity as human persons, have an inalienable right to education. This education should be carried out in such a way that it meets the particular needs of the individuals of people of South Sudan and is should adapt to their ability rather than using it for abuse.

Three things make this site so under par are first, the use of inaccurate writings of these two guys names Dinka dominate Splm/A. and Bol Deng , spiraling this marvelous site to be tribal zone for debates and finally, the use of this site by uneducated people who has nothing to do because some of these people are in USA , Europe, and Australia, they have given food for free in USA and Europe, so they do nothing only spending a lot of time posting unnecessary and senseless writings. Some of them, are in those undersized towns in Southern Sudan like Bor, and other towns, sitting under trees for the all day wasting too much time , instead to find themselves something to do, Guys think at least to participate in development rather than criticize leaders.

My advice to you those who for eternity on this site posting wrong and useless comments, none of you will reach where Riek Machar is, he is now Vice President and he can have possibility to be president of South Sudan, but some of you are just wasting their time instead for some of you to go and upgrade themselves than come and campaign for seat not war or harts , let me notify you my friends , to reach that position where Salva and Riek is, in coming 20 years from now will be very tricky, leaders will be elect base on what they know , not in term of criticism, or whatever, what about you? Do you really know something? Or you just spend your life time in the camps such as Kakuma in Kenya, Dimma in Ethiopia? And did English course for some months, which I doubt, I really doubted your education.

Bravo, Dr. Riek, Modern man increase awareness of yearn for his responsibility in shaping his own destiny, democracy has sensitive the popularity of the democratic form of government. Especially we, in South Sudan, are looking forward to a country which clearly embodies the guaranteed right of the citizens through universal suffrage to choose their own government and their representatives with a fair division of powers.

My suggestion support the following dates:

-7 Feb 2011 to be Independence Day ,or
-30 Jan 2011 can be another day to declare independence
-16 may 1983 can be all Martyrs day of memory
-15 Feb 1955 can another for memory our heroes
-30 July 2005 can be special day for the late Dr.John Garang.

I wish to reiterate that we fully to welcome the new nation South Sudan with nothing call tribalism , for we realize that the conditions, needs and aspirations of the citizens of this country have evolved and changed so much that an adaptation and a re-adjustment of the political and social structure are called for. I renew my pledge to cooperate fully.I remind all Christians and people of good will of their duty to contribute according to their ability.
May we all learn to forgive and work in harmony throughout South Sudan, and thus evince faith, hope and love similar to those of the South Sudan Martyrs as we tackle the task of drawing up a new Nation for our future , always keeping before our eyes our golden Nation.

Though other issues such as boarder demarcation are not yet implemented, The Referendum which was conducted here in the Sudan and other Countries, culminated the CPA .Therefore, the official announcement of the outcome of the referendum in Khartoum on the 07 Feb 2011, to me as an “Individual” should be our Independence Day as it marked the end of the 55 years South Sudan quest for freedom, justice, equality …

Advice to you my bros .
The head line of this article reads: South Sudan is yet to decide on its official Independence day-Machar . end of quote. ( HE.Riek was just suggesting but not dictating according to me )

But because most of us have been disconnected from reality, sanity and togetherness by unceaseless hatrad and tribalistc mentality, we resorted to fighting one another on the web which is meant for healthy comments ! I beseech you my dear brothers! let us put the past behind us and face the future together ! We need one another ! we can only develpe this war razed Nation by promoting reconciliation among ourselves ! If the learnt class cant promote oness even on Web, then I wonder what Country South Sudan will be like after July 09 2011 !!! Please , please my brothers ! the world is watching us day and night ! let us not make Our New brand autonomous Nation a “Laughing Stolk” God bless South Sudan and all the Inhabitants !

Reminder:– you guys have left out the so-called 1991’s(ssim) faction, i thought it was as important day to be listed among those aforementioned revolutionary parties.

just wondering to why not if it was something holistic since it has always been mentioned in several cases on this (web), as if it was the movement that has brought about the (self-determination) despite its delusional.

Well, now you had realized how negative it was that’s why it’s excluded from being mentioned….death to it. and lets forget about ngundeng satan, it won’t make any differences in the south.

You should keep it to yourselves nuer as your magician….it has nothing to do with southerners, stop mention it in whatever circumstances regarding junubin’s affairs.

Its still unrealistic for our brothers Dinka to realize that Dr Riek MACHAR was the only neutral friend who kept and will keep south sudan united peacefully.

I still don’t understand why brothers Dinka(Bor) are ganging on him and wish him to death like there is no tomoro.

lets me break it down who is Dr riek and what it mean for him to be a life. First he is the only politician who can convince nuer(NAATH)in south, because we NAATH are very compassionate and want the best thing for the country and that’s why we listen to him because his vision will benefit each individual not just Bor but for all tribes. so Dr riek doesn’t worth diying otherwise we woop your ass.

Second, Dr riek is the only peace Architect in south sudan. believe it or not ..
