SPLM accuses Sudanese president of seeking to overthrow the South’s government

March 12, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – Tensions flared between the North and South Sudan as the latter accused president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir and his aides of planning to overthrow the government in the South which is dominated by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).

On Saturday forces loyal to renegade General Athor launched a surprise attack on Malakal, capital of the south’s oil-producing Upper Nile state before being repelled by the SPLA.

The South is set to officially become the world’s newest state in July after southerners voted overwhelmingly in favor of independence in January’s referendum.

The ruling National Congress Party (NCP) recognized the outcome of the vote, earning praise from the international community which feared that the North would seek to undermine the self-determination vote.

“We in SPLM have details of a plan by the NCP to overthrow the government of south Sudan before July,” said the SPLM Secretary General Pagan Amum told journalists today.

“The NCP has been creating, training, supplying and arming militia groups in southern Sudan with the aim to destabilize and overthrow the government,” Amum said.

“This plan is being overseen by the President of the Republic … himself.” he added without giving details.

He called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to send a committee to investigate crimes carried out by Athor’s forces and “the conspiracy” of the NCP.

Amum said the SPLM decided to freeze talks with the NCP on post-referendum arrangements “until it stops its policy for obstructing stability in South Sudan, and until after the Security Council’s investigation is concluded,”.

The SPLM official also revealed that they are examining alternative ways to transport oil produced in the South instead of using Port Sudan in the North.

South Sudan president Salva Kiir “has directed me to study the possibility of stopping the export of oil from the south through the north after July,”.

The separation of Sudan into two states will deny the North billions of dollars in revenue generating from vast oilfields in the south of the country.

Currently the North and the South are splitting the proceeds of crude in accordance with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) signed in 2005.

Most of Sudan’s proven daily output of 500,000 oil barrel is extracted from oilfields in the south whereas the pipelines, infrastructure and refineries are based in the north. Both sides need to maintain cooperation on oil after secession to sustain their economies which depend greatly on oil revenues.

South Sudan has been mulling the construction of a pipeline to transport crude oil from the landlocked South Sudan capital city of Juba to Lamu, a port on the Indian Ocean. But even that would take years to complete.

Khartoum denied Amum’s accusations labeling them as “ridiculous”.

“If the government of the south wants to export oil through any other means, it is up to them. We don’t want to take something that is not ours,” NCP information official Rabie Abdel-Aati told Reuters.

Bashir’s adviser for security affairs Salah Gosh said that these allegations are baseless and made to cover the SPLM’s internal problems.

Gosh told Sudan’s state media that the NCP and SPLM agreed that the security and stability will govern the relations between the North and South. He said that the NCP is following with concern the tensions in the South.

this is a serious matter that must be deal with, but who is the alternative government in waiting? I don’t see any party in the South better organize like SPLM at the momment.

I think there must be some Trojan-horse working within the SPLM to effect change. This is not new, they have done it before but failed.

SPLM accuses Sudanese president of seeking to overthrow the South’s government
As a matter of fact, I agree that if there is anything that can overthrow the Government of Southern Sudan, then I can support it. If Omar Beshir wanted to overthrow the South Sudan Government, then why the South Sudan Government does not show it readiness to oustify the Khartoum Regime under Omar Beshir? Does it mean that SPLM/SPLA have no power? Why do we always like to handed all our problems to the International Community instead of finding a way to solve our own disputes?

I criticed these three statements being said by Mr Pagan Amum as follow; “The NCP has been creating, training, supplying and arming militia groups in southern Sudan with the aim to destabilize and overthrow the government,” Amum said, and “This plan is being overseen by the President of the Republic … himself.” he added without giving details.
“He called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to send a committee to investigate crimes carried out by Athor’s forces and “the conspiracy” of the NCP.”

If in fact the SPLM/SPLA knows that the Government of Sudan in Khartoum is arming, training, supplying some of the other militia in Southern Sudan, then why the SPLM/SPLA does not armed other militia in Khartoum? If no militia in Khartoum by the SPLM/SPLA to arm for, then why they do not mobilize Darfurian and those of the Eastern Blue Nile against th Khartoum Government? SPLM/SPLA is the worse Governement I have never seen in my life. When I was in Tharpam since 1987, my dream was that SPLM/SPLA will win the battle regardless of what difficulty we might fall in, but now people including the top ministers are just looking “what will go in their pockets”

In this present time, SPLM/SPLA is the government for the “absent minded leaders” not the Government to bring a good prosperities to its citizens. Shame to all Southern Sudanese leaders.

Sometimes I do ask myself why July 9 is fixed in the minds of everybody as if the date will solve problems. Why should Athor defeat even when his base is baseless?

I have seen among the articles of today, where NCP is planning to form its party in South Sudan. Why do have to allow that rubbish to be dumped in South Sudan? I thought South Sudanese will learn from the past. Solution I propose is that DOOM for Bashir and Hell for his party. Bashir should die, ??? ICC is DEAD ???

    Oh my Goodness!!

We know this is going to happen, south Sudan is a failed state and will put all their failures on the north, no matter whether it is right or wrong but there should always be scapegoat for the failure and some kind of attention divertion and that for sure is the north!!

The real reason for what happening in the south not because of north, if southerners are united north will never be able to divide them if we assume that’s the case but the real reasons for what happening in the south because of injustice, discrimination that based on tribalism, inequality, lack of democracy, lack of security, corruption among leaders and authorities, and fake election which led to Mr Athor rebellion and any one who feels the injustice and inequality will join his group and other rebellion groups, these are the real reasons behind what happening in the south and the situation will be more complicated if not resolve by looking into he real cause but blaming the north and put every responsibility on the north will not solve the problem and will ignite it more!

British administration did not make the south independent state because they knew very well it is going to be failed state and having the fact that south Sudan was never state back in the history but different tribes fight over cows and land possession.

One of the British administration solution for the south was to divide it between north Sudan, Kenya and Uganda and I wish if that was the case, Upper Nile and Bahr Alghazal would be north because of their historically ties and relation with north than other parts of the south, the rest of the south would be divided between Kenya and Uganda and I wish if that was the case because that solution would have stopped the bloodshed since early time and made estability in the whole region, and peace and love among all people.

Now, anyone who has different opinion with SPLM or peacefully object SPLM cannot live a normal life in the south and may be killed like Mr. Lam Akol who cannot sleep one night in Juba in peace! violence will generate violence and people will communicate with each other through the language that they understand and some time may be fatal communication!

Please look into the real cause and the roots of the problem and stop making us as scapegoat of your failure because that will not solve your problem but will complicate it!

    Dear SPLM supporters

I said ‘SPLM’ because it is a political party which represent the only fraction of South Sudan population.

please blaming NCP or North Sudan when there is an internal crisis in the South Sudan is old fashion and outdated. invent another slogan since that the only way you guys good at, but its suitable for a governing strategy. Governing is hard it requires taking responsibility as both and individual and institutions level.
International community especially the United States don’t like whiners but admires doers. their patient will run out pretty quickly if people like Pagan Amum who only knows about propaganda keeps blaming the North. Now, I know the North do sleep to destabilizes the South, and why should they? there isn’t any law which prevents a state to destabilizes other states as long as they do get caught. the only thing we could do his make all our people happy and include them in the process with in our governing structure or by settling every dispute peaceful to keep the enemy out.
but deciding every disputes with in our borders will invites all kind of enemy to destabilized our region(soon-to-be independent.

It is always very seay to find a scapegoat! It was very typical communist propoganda during the cold war to accuse the imperialism for everything even when the Russian football was defeated! This typical of Pagan…typical communist propoganda!

Pagan has fudged and manupulated the last conference of the SPLA , he fudged and manupulated the selection of the SPLA and he confessed that he had made mistkes , he then fudged and manupulated the elections. He knowes very well that his ligitmacy came through the gun burrel, but now his southern parteners and other senior SPLA members who were left out in undemocratic way has got guns themselves and they know their way to the push very well!

Many innocent life will be lost unnecesarily, many poor people will die for nothing, and streams of blood will flow for the wrong cause! In a place where everyone holds a gun and tribal loyality is abused by selfish politicians; playing the game of power is futile. For 50 years the SAF was not able to defeat the rebells in the South and there is no reason for the SPLA to believe that they can do that now!

The world has changed , people are taking their rights in their hands. The old communist revolutionary ways of Pagan to fudge the will of the people and to supress them, will not work.Blaming others will not work, even if they are really working against you!At the end of the day , you have to do your own homework and you have to do it right.

The NCP or the jalabba didn’t fudge the selections of the SPLA candidates for the elections neither did it manupulate the elections in the South!

The NCP has no interest in creating turmoil in the south.Any method to overthrow the GOSS will creat tremendous insecurity and dangerous anarchy in the south. This not in the interest of the North.Any insecurity in the south will endangour the oil industry which is very vital to both the South and the north.Let us be clear and honest about that! The North cannot afford to loose his interest in the oil industry and cannot and will not endangour it.Theis a simple fact of life and I donnot think that they are that stupid to ignore that simple fact!

Pagan cannot lure the international sympathy by simply pointing fingers towards the NCP, simply because they know the facts on the ground much better than he does! The CIA predicted that they should expect genoicde worst than that in Rawanda in the next 5 years in the south!

Facing facts is the best way of solving problems.War is easy to ignite , but it is difficult to be put off, particulary in the push.It should never be an option. You will end killing your own people.

The SPLA should be transformed from the SPLA to the national Army, to protect the soverginty and unity of the country and not to protect corrupt politicans and their greedy interest! Addressing the grievenaces of the rebells in the south is the only way out. This should be in a transparent and democratic way, even if it takes you conducting another fair and free electioins.

Shouting with futile threats like stopping oil through the north is useless . Simply because you know and they know, and the whle world knowes, that you cannot do it and will not do it!

Poor and marginalized people in the Sout are dying for no good reason. The deserve peace for which they were longing for a very very long tim.

But I don’t understand that some folks do like to impugn the people who are out side the squabble and who were not responsible for the collapse of the civilians people. Why do you like to bereavement of the people who thinks about the days and nights for the imminent of South Sudan as if they are doing erroneous things to the Southerners,
Now without these people no body can do proficient things in this gov’t of Southern Sudan and even the South Sudan gov’t could have to collapse.

    What a double shame
First because Pagan is ready with his lies..was it 24 hours when they discovered that Bashir was supporting Athor. why in that moment in particualr. Second shame because of those who are ready to believe all the lies he says. For those who thinks SPLM can support Darfurian I tell you SPLM is slready supporting them ..remember the last visit of Basir to Juba, didn’t Kiir say we expel Darfurians movements? they were there..Pagan has to face their problems instead of blaming others because under the influence of the vent people would believe him but after a while lies will be exposed

Yesterday SPLA gave the reason of massacring their own Anyuak brothers and sisters in Gambella district, as well as people of Oromia, that they have to carry out the independence of the Southern Sudan what ever the cost could be. No principle, No conviction, no humanly acceptable culture, even if they have to perpetuate heinous crimes against innocent civilians as mercenaries for the Abyssinian regimes. Now, the Independence is achieved!!! Why such atrocities still being carried out against their own people by the SPLA? I continue to wonder!!!!
