Sudan vice-president Taha receives Canadian peace envoy

NAIVASHA, Kenya, May 23, 2004 (SUNA/ST) — First Vice-President Ali Uthman Muhammad Taha met at his residence in Naivasha, Kenya, Saturday, 22 May with the Canadian envoy for peace in Sudan, Senator Mobina Jaffer. The Canadian envoy conveyed her country’s support for the peace process in Sudan as well as its concern with ongoing peace negotiations between the two parties.

Senator Mobina Jaffer conveyed to the first vice-president Canada’s determination to contribute effectively to the reconstruction process at the post-war stage.

The first vice-president commended Canada’s concern, indicating that the peace efforts would continue till reaching a final comprehensive agreement that would end the war and pave the way for development in the south and all over the Sudan.

Canada’s Special Envoy was in Khartoum and Darfur from May 18 to 20.

She met with the Sudanese president to express Canada’s ongoing concerns with respect to the Sudanese peace process generally, the obstacles encountered by humanitarian agencies attempting access to affected civilians and the human rights situation in the Darfur region.
