Jonglei tribal groups agree to initiate dialogue to settle conflicts

March 24, 2011 (BOR) — A peace-brokering local organization, Greater Upper Nile Peace Initiative (GUNPI), held this week a number of meetings between Southern Sudanese ethnic groups in Bor pushing them to initiate dialogue to settle tribal difference.

South Sudan voted overwhelmingly in favor of secession in January this year in a referendum granted by 2005 peace agreement in Naivasha Kenya. The state will declare officially its separation from the north in July 9.

Formed in 2009 by youth from Unity, Upper Nile and Jonglei states the GUNPI is funded by Catholic Relief Services (CRS). The group manages to bring together chiefs and intellectuals of both Dinka Bor and Murle to settle their differences face to face.

GUNPI, which held talks with Bor chiefs and traditional leaders on 17 March in Bor and with Murle chiefs and leaders between 21 and 23 March, has successfully convinced the communities to enter the peace talks in Manybol on 29 March.

The Murle’s paramount chief, Nganthoo Kabula Laju, who replaced Ismail Konyi last year, welcomed the talks between Dinka Bor and Murle in a conference held in Pibor county headquarters between the Murle chiefs, leaders and GUNPI officials headed by coordinator, Makur Duot.

Manybol’s chief, Nyalang, a former general under Ismail Konyi who fought against the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) before the Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed in 2005, will host the three-day talks. He assured the GUNPI officials and other attendees of their safety at the peace talks.

There is a longstanding conflict between the Dinka Bor and Murle which involves child abductions and cattle raiding.

The conference will involve the commissioners of the two counties; members of parliament; and 50 chiefs and leaders from the Dinka Bor and Murle tribes.
Makur Duot told Sudan Tribune that his organisation planned the peace talks between Murle and Nuer of Akobo; the Duk; and the Uror in Manybol.

The problem of dirty Murles with Dinka Bor is all about food and it’s not going to stop soon, unless the government commits to give them enough food on daily basis or else they will keep hunting for food wherever they can get it.

Peace will not prevails in Jonglei, unless none-Dinka Bor resident cease their dirty activities. And if they don’t then, the peoples of the greater Bor will takes the law into our hands,so they can defend their own properties and territory.

This is just a futile initiative! How many peace pacts have the Murle tribe dishonoured in the past? Murle are only a blind lot that doesn’t believe in peace and tranquility. I wish there was a certain ‘island’ characterized by torture and grieve so that we can take this uncouth tribe and have them experience the taste of their own medicine. Murle is a tribe ruled by impunity and would not relent to any peaceful measures. I would suggest ‘extinguishing fire with fire’ as the only solution to their menace because Jonglei state can’t be kept in torment by this elusive and noxious commmunity.
