Israel strikes again in Sudan?

April 5, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese authorities revealed on Tuesday that a Sonata vehicle was destroyed as a result of a foreign attack but offered conflicting accounts on whether it was carried out by planes or missiles fired from the Red Sea.

Multiple security sources told Sudan Tribune that the two men who were inside the car and killed instantly, had just arrived in town through Port Sudan airport.

Their identities however, remain unknown and the sources said that both men appear to have been under the careful watch of the party that carried out the attack throughout their stay in the country.

The Sudanese Media Center Website (SMC) which is widely believed to be run by the country’s security bureau, was the first to report the news saying that a foreign plane launched the attack at 9 pm local time (1800 GMT) in an area known as Kalaneeb which was described as 14 kilometers away from the coastal city of Port Sudan and on the main road leading to the regional airport.

It further reported that Sudanese ant-aircraft defenses responded with heavy fire forcing the plane to flee their airspace.

However, in the early morning hours of Wednesday SMC quoted the deputy Red Sea governor Salah Sir Al-Khitim Kenna as saying that no planes were involved and that it was only a missile fired against the target but did not elaborate.

Earlier today, the police issued a statement saying that a missile hit the car “from an unknown source” but added that it was likely fired from the Red Sea. It also gave a different time for when this took place saying it happened at 8:05 PM (17:05 GMT)

The confusion is exacerbated by separate remarks made by the deputy chairman of the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) in the Red Sea state Mohamed Tahir Hussein who said that eyewitnesses told him that a plane came from the Red Sea, hit the car and headed back.

Hussein added that “mystery” surrounds the identity of the attackers but he pointed fingers at Israel’s spy agency (Mossad) and suggested that the planes belongs to them and was tracking down arms smugglers.

The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) declined to comment on the incident when contacted by Ynetnews based in Tel Aviv.

Sudan’s foreign ministry also declined to comment. Sudan’s army was not immediately available to comment.

A local MP by the name Mustafa Mandar had told SMC that the plane was following the vehicle until it came to an open area and sent bombs its way. He vehemently denied that Eastern Sudan has become a transit point for arms smuggling.

Some analysts speaking to Sudan Tribune speculated that this was an assassination plot against the two men who were in the car given its limited capacity to transport any significant amount of arms.

“We heard three loud explosions,” a source at Port Sudan airport told Reuters. “We went outside to see what was happening and eye witnesses told us they saw two helicopters which looked liked Apaches flying past.”

Two years ago it was disclosed that Israel carried out an unknown number of airstrikes in early 2009 in Eastern Sudan using fighter jets against a convoy of arms that was allegedly headed to the Gaza strip which is controlled by the Islamic militant group Hamas.

The Sudanese president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir and other officials in Khartoum at the time acknowledged that Israel was likely behind the air raids which state media reported to have killed 119 illegal immigrants who were trying to sneak into Europe.

The Jewish state has declined to confirm or deny the reports on its involvement but the then Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said that the government is “operating in every area in which terrorist infrastructures can be struck”.

Last month, the Egyptian media quoting army sources said that it had shelled a convoy of vehicles laden with arms near the Sudanese border. No further details were given and Khartoum has reportedly asked for clarifications from Cairo.

In recent says Sudan has denied media reports on smuggling of weapons through Sudan to reach Hamas and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

This is a serious storm hiting Sudan security,
all i can say is”What goes around comes around”.
The central goverment must be hiding something regarding this air attack because i believe no one can just wake up one day & attack someone’s terretory without a cause,i think N.Sudan is involved in some dark activites in a particuler nation, that is why they responed back because no smoke with out a fire.
Folks i think something is wrong here!the question is;why did the jet specifically hit the car only & returnd back towards the red sea as the eyewidness claimied so?
I will leav mohammed Ali & Jalaby to tell to exactly what is going on.

All States deserve to protect their nations at all cost. The state of Israel is not exceptional to this fundamental reality. Sudan and some States in North Africa plus those in the Middle East such as Iran are correctly branded as States that sponsor acts or terorrism. Activities such as the smuggling of both light and heavy weapons across to extremist groups like Palestinian Hammas and Lebanese Hezballah constitutes extreme acts of terorrism againt the security of Jerusalem.

Hoever, the point I’m trying to put across is that the bombing in Sudan’s Red Sea State by the ISraelist air force is an absolutly a right thing for Israel to do. congratulation. The message to both North Sudan authorities and terorist groups across North Sudan in the Middle East is that you need to be very careful because the State of Israel and their sophisticated Intelligence Servince is active and has an ability to detect every terorist move.

Sudan can easily prevent this kind of airstrike if they avert foreign weapon smugglers to anywhere through Sudan.

I am not saying Sudan is supporting any weapons smugglers but if they reluctantly allow them to operate the way they did then Sudan should expect the consequences!
It’s the issue that can be avoided easily.

It seem like this is the second time this strike happen, how come this never happen to Ethiopia or Kenya next door?

As I said, it’s an easy issue to solve.

What a conflicting report? The authorities could not identify the attackers…. and they could not even identify the victims. The NCP security intelligents are good in arresting political opponents. This is the only service they can provide to the people. No one cares about the country borders and air space. What a shame ! ! !

    Dear Sudanese,

Salah Gosh, the security advisor, should resign from his position because he failed to institute security policies to protect Sudanese people. Also, the head of the Sudanese military intelligence, and minister of Defense should resign too because they failed miserably to protect Sudanese people. Thanks.

I don’t care about Israeli bombing port Sudan or any others North Sudan cities, since they are being use by terrorist groups like Hezbolah, Hamas, and others Islamists to smuggler route for weapons into Gaza strip so they can be used for attacks against Israeli civilian and cities.

As those officials you have mentioned above, as failed and should resign that is also non-of my business.

SPLM ruling party ministers should also resign for failing to protect Southerners against Khartoum bombing and also failing to have raw intelligence against plots against Southerners.

SPLM ruling party is a traitor party because they are allowing Arabs intelligences agents pose as business men into South Sudan. Soon it will blow up in their face.

I don’t care about Israeli Air force or Missiles being send over Easter Region of Port Sudan.

Israel has the right to go after smuggling routes being use by terror organizations like Hezbolah, Hamas and other Islamist terrorists who have found a safe way to smuggled deadly weapons via Sudan from their biggest sponsor The Ayotolah run Iran.

These weapons ends up in Gaza strip where they can be fire upon into Southern Israeli cities.

SPLM ruling party in South Sudan should cut off all ties against Arabs countries who are supporting these terror organizations. If not SPLM should not represent me or any other Southerners by associating itself with these countries like Syria, Lebanon(the power base for Hezbolah), and Iran off course(which doesn’t have any relations with us nor do we want to in the future).

As to the resignation of all the people you have mentioned. well, it’s up to North Sudan Government.
in the Meant time there should have been more resignation in the SPLM ruling party after failing to protect South Sudanese against their enemy bombing and by allowing Foreign agents to infiltrate into our region.
But no SPLM and SPLA is being used to fight their own brothers while the enemy is busy given our oil money to these terrorist organizations like Hamas and Hezbolah.

United States should and will soon tell SPLM to reform and stop appeasing Khartoum Government who is assisting these a terror organizations financially through oil money which comes from the South.

“One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter” I hope you remember this famous quote.

The ANC was once labelled a terrorist group by the racist South African government but today they rule SA.

In the 50‘s, the communist guerrilla movement of Fidel Castro was also labelled as such by the Batista government but they have now ruled Cuba for decades.

Patrice Lamumba was labelled a terrorist by the Belgian Empire but he led the liberation of Congo and became its first African leader, shortly after he was assassinated with the help of the CIA.

Countless other revolutionary figures and movements across the globe have been labelled as terrorists but later vindicated as fighting a just cause.

I don’t condone the home made rockets or bombs killing any civilian (Jew, Muslim or Christian) in Israel but neither should you be quiet when Israel systematically kill in Palestine and even across borders to maintain its illegally obtained land (illegal according to the UN concept of international law).

You southerners who congratulate sovereignty violations just because its committed against your enemies are in for a rude awakening, especially when foreigners begin to legally exploit South Sudan (they have already mildly started). I find it ironic and astonishing how one could sympathize with the Israeli civilians and not with Palestinian civilians who are humiliated daily and are collectively punished for the actions of a few militant organizations or individuals.

Yes, I would love to see the NCP mafia gang coming out and threatening Israel with retaliation over this attack as they do their own brothers in Sudan (doubtful) but this does not excuse that who ever aggresses over a sovereign nation’s airspace is violating international law if one is to believe there’s such a concept.

Having said the above, the truth is, we live in a jungle planet where the strong survives by oppressing the weak. But if some of you want to sound remotely humane? then you should condemn all atrocities against humans and don’t be selective because you appear like hypocrites and as bad as those who are committing the atrocities.

It seems to me, you are proud of the fact that the US will and should tell GoSS how to formulate its policy, what happened to South Sudan Parliment? Southern Sudanese Civil Society? Pressure Groups and advocates of Human Rights? etc etc… Your promotion of an imperialistic approach is exactly what Africa does not need.

    Liberator,

I will do the same if South Sudan got attack by foreign powers. I’m not only going to ask the head of intelligence, minister of defense, and security adviser in the Goss, but also the president and vice president of the Goss to resign.

Regarding the Warrap state assassination, I believe that is shameful to see what’s taken place over there. As you know, I don’t endorse violence. Violence should be condemned by all means in South Sudan.

We are not going to allow such cowardice act pass without condemning it. It would be hypocrisy if I overlooked this barbaric attempt that took place in Warrap. I’m not saying this because for SPLM sake, but I said it according to my beliefs and convictions.

Likewise, I also condemned the plan made to assassinate VP. Machar, as a cowardice, barbaric, and uncivilized acts made to destabilize the South and create havoc between Dinka and Nuer.

I don’t endorse assassination in its all forms. Therefore, I’m for peace and love. Let’s give opportunity for peace so that everybody would prosper when we have stability. Thanks

Sudanese government shouldn’t be surprise about the misiles, U.S navy is not that far away from Port sudan. Any misilles which had missed the target in Libya , would probably ended up your distination. “No Abyeii compromised , to bribe U.S or southern Sudan”, we are coming after you busted. More misilles are coming along the way.

Khartoum knows the identity of the victims but doesn’t want to go public. Tomorrow you will hear a different story coming from NISS and NCP officials. They know these victims because they were under the protection of NISS who allowed the victims to travel around constantly changing number plates but failed to change identity wherever and whatever time they move.

If you talking about the NCP, why did you vote for Al bashir then in the last presidential election in Sudan.

I’m not going to waste my time with you since you can not even answer one question. Labeling me with any negative names is not going to change who I am.

Everybody in this forum including you, know that am anti tribalism, hate, and vulgarism. FYI, I’m for peace, unity, love, respect, and mutual understanding.

    Dear Joseph Canada,

Long time since last time we met in this forum. I’m glad to hear from you again…. Well, you are absolutely right about the North. But you know what! let them keep doing that, sooner or later they will find themselves out of power.

I was calling upon the Sudanese people to wage general uprising to offset this shameful regime of Al bashir. That why I suggested as a “political rhetoric” to those people on the top who run the country to resign. But Boy! most guys in this website did not like the idea and even some of them accused me of being a Jalaba in southerner choose.

Mr. Jose Canada, I understand your points, a stable North would means stable South. That’s why regime change in the North would be helpful to our stability. Thanks for taking the time to see us.
