Hamas official in charge of weapons killed in Port Sudan attack: report

April 6, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The target of the air strike launched by an a foreign plane was a senior official in the Islamic militant group Hamas which controls Gaza strip, according to Al-Arabiya TV channel based in Dubai

The name of the official is Abdel-Latif Al-Ashqar who is responsible for arms within the movement.

Al-Ashqar was described as the successor of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh who was assassinated in Dubai last year.

However, a member of the Palestinian legislative council by the name of Ismail Al-Ashqar denied the report. He stressed that the alleged target who also happens to be his nephew is unharmed.

On Tuesday night Sudan said that a Hyundai Sonata car was attacked near the coastal city killing its two passengers but gave conflicting accounts on whether this was carried out by a missile or a plane.

Today Sudan foreign minister Ali Karti accused Israel of standing behind the raid.

“This is absolutely an Israeli attack,” Karti told reporters after his meting with the new US special envoy to Sudan.

“Sudan reserves its right to react,” before confirming that his country would lodge a complaint with the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) against the Jewish state.

Karti claimed that Israel wants to thwart a move by the US to remove Sudan from the list of countries that sponsor terrorism which was supposed to take place in July.

The Israeli government declined to comment in line with its long-standing policy on external operations.

But an unnamed senior Israeli military official told TIME Magazine Wednesday confirmed that Tel Aviv was responsible.

“It’s not our first time there,” the official was quoted as saying, apparently referring to the 2009 airstrike that demolished an arms convoy near the border with Egypt.

The government had said that one of the victims is a Sudanese citizens but gave no details on the identity of the other one but Karti emphasized that he had no links to the government or Islamist movements.

Senior security sources in Khartoum told Sudan Tribune that the Sudanese was a man by the name of Mohamed Gubara. DNA samples were taken from the scene by teams for analysis.

The Sudanese Media Center Website (SMC) which is widely believed to be run by the country’s security bureau, was the first to report the news yesterday saying that a foreign plane launched the attack at 9 pm local time (1800 GMT) in an area known as Kalaneeb which was described as 14 kilometers away from the coastal city of Port Sudan and on the main road leading to the regional airport.

It further reported that Sudanese ant-aircraft defenses responded with heavy fires forcing the plane to flee the airspace.

However, in the early morning hours of Wednesday SMC quoted the deputy Red Sea governor as saying that no planes were involved and that it was a missile attack but did not elaborate.

A local MP by the name Mustafa Mandar had told SMC that the plane was tracking the vehicle until it came to an open area and sent bombs its way. He vehemently denied that Eastern Sudan has become a transit point for arms smuggling.

“We heard three loud explosions,” a source at Port Sudan airport told Reuters. “We went outside to see what was happening and eye witnesses told us they saw two helicopters which looked liked Apaches flying past.”

Two years ago it was disclosed that Israel carried out an unknown number of airstrikes in early 2009 in Eastern Sudan using fighter jets against a convoy of arms that was allegedly headed to the Gaza.

    Not enough.

Khartoum government have had been asspciate with so many things including Bin Laden and I think this is just the beginning. Most of the militiamen who destrorying Darfur region came from Iraq and Omar al Bashir hiring them to get rid with African Black in the Sudan. Today the cell phone accompany for Bin Laden in Sudan still operating within Khartoum while, this is the man who killed 3000 innocents people. Now a day who knows if Bin Laden is in Sudan or not it maybe inside Sudan.

The real question is that, why the International community failed to act in Sudan.? The U.N. have been sent to Sudan unfortunatel, the Khartoum government was been observed by many people around the world and was found that, Sudan government led by the indictment apparently, Omar al Bashir was continuing to attacked on the civilian population in Darfur and even in the front of the U.N. Peace Keeperforces. I belief the Sudan’s case have left many questions to be asked on the International community.

To all those blind loyalists and are spoon fed their news.

Whether Khartoum is guilty of supporting certain organizations or otherwise, Israel has no right to attack individuals in other countries without the implicit consent of that nation, PERIOD! Although I agree that Khartoum must not allow its territory to be used by targeted organizations to avoid risking the lives of its own citizens.

Its funny that some commentators on here would suggest that others should not argue with them as if they are the only ones who are educated. People have different opinions and you just have to accept that, but you should try to back your argument with facts not indoctrination.

Israel is the only country in the Middle East with nuclear weapons and has refused to ratify the nuclear treaty and has ignored countless UN resolutions and according to Human Rights organizations have committed crimes against humanity but they’re untouchable due to their big brother, “The Empire”. So in actual fact they are not much different to all the other religiously backward and fundamentalist governments ruling the Middle East, some may even argue that they are worse, simply because of their military might.

Like I said before, anyone who condemn the atrocities of NCP all over Sudan for the past decades should not sound hypocritical by supporting the atrocities committed by other governments, including Israel, US, UK or France.

We live in a planet of sovereign states (supposedly) and every state has the right to defend itself but when some states act with aggression and impunity they are no different to the likes of NCP government who have inflected untold misery and suffering on its own population. Preemptive aggression is against international law, like it or not but when you’re powerful, international law is useless. Lets just call a spade a spade.

We Africans have suffered for centuries and continue to suffer despite our abundance of riches, simply because many of us support the strong without questioning their motives, the independence of South Sudan would be meaningless if you don’t change this slave mentality. Yesterday it was the Arabized elite of Khartoum, tomorrow (or today) it will be the greedy corporations of the West.

    Dear Sudani Logik,

You summed it up very well. Our guys here don’t understand where they come from. As you said, they argue without evidence that supports their points or opinions.

They still believe that when History “with the Capital H” was written, it was written by everybody. But the truth is History was written (for their benefits) by the powerful nations. On other words, History was written by Imperialist countries when they defeated and exploited the weaker nations.

The History will never be written by the losers nations. The imperialist will always control you and contain you from being free.

Those Slogans by USA, Israel, UK, France, and even Saudi Arabia are mere fabrications to confuse the minds of our brothers in the third world countries, I mean losing countries according to the international imperialism.

So, brothers wake up from your slumber and face the realities of the international politics or Rat Race. Thanks

Mr. Logik, I agree Sudan is a sovereign Nation and no nation should abuse it sovereignty, but the point is you can’t have it both ways.

If you don’t want to be called a thief then doesn’t go and steal, if you don’t want to be hit then don’t hit somebody. The same application applies to terrorist.

If you know you can’t fight the wild lion, then why wake it up and agitate. You initiate a fight to someone you know you can fight back otherwise stay away.

    Folks,

Khartoum did know the identity of the victims but didn’t choose to go public. Tomorrow you will hear a different story coming from NISS and NCP officials. They know these victims because they were under the protection of NISS who allowed the victims to travel around constantly changing number plates but failed to change identity wherever and whatever time they move.

This is lesson number three since the 6-days war of 1967. More will come so long as Khartoum continues to provide sanctuary to Islamists or facilitate smuggling of arms to Hamaz or any terrorist organizations.

    To you Sudani Logik,

Your comment always tries to be independent, biased and sometimes sympathetic with Khartoum to a certain extent. What good did Khartoum do to you as an infidel or whatever you identify yourself since they came into this country early 19th Century? Be happy that you’re going to be a first-class citizen in your own country.

It’s good that the FM, Ali Karti mentioned something that should wake you up about Khartopum’s murky efforts to get its name off the terrorism list. Why does the FM say this attack is intended by Israel to inform USA that it’s still supporting terrorism or terrorist organization?

You have no idea or evidence that Khartoum is a double dealer when it comes to fighting terrorism on global scale. It provides one piece of information to western intel while facilitating smuggling of arms to Hamaz in Gaza. Khartoum has connection with Al-Shabab in Somalia. Why do you blame Israel for the attack when its security is at stake?

Concerning Africa and its leaders, never believe that Africa will be on their own educationally, economically, technologicallly and politically as you’re trying to claim. Africa desperately needs and will continue to rely on educational, economical, technological and democratic assistance or suport of the west for generations to come. Believe me or not. Democratic values and freedom are currently knocking on every African and Arab door.

Africa has a long way to be on its own. Do you know why? Because of lack of overcoming its cultural, religious, economic, social, and political differences. OAU or AU should just keep trying to bridge these differences. European countries did achieve first on individual basis regardless of their linguistic differences before demonstrating commitment to becoming one, EU.

Similarly, Arabs have the same more or less problems but still rely on western support. They have oil but since the discovery of oil reserves in their mostly hot deserts, western education and technology played vital roles to get the oil explored, drilled, pumped, refined or piped to the international market to get the desperately needed western dollars or Euros for import and export servcices. I stop here for now.

What are you talking about??? Independent? Biased and Sympathetic? all in one sentence, complete contradiction on your part. Assume nothing and explore everything is my answer to your above blabber.

Its very sad that a seemingly educated African is promoting the same propaganda that is used by the Arabized elites of Khartoum against the South Sudanese (“they can’t rule themselves”, “they need us” and “they will be a failed state because we’re educated and they’re savages”) when describing the unfair relationship between the West and Africa. Re-educate yourself brother, you are very lost indeed.

The West is a parasite and is run by a greedy few at the top while majority of humanity is suffering due to this neo-liberal capitalism BS they keep feeding you with. Even the Western poor at the bottom of the food chain are starting to realize the failed system they have supported.

I pray to God that your likes never hold a position of power in any government as you would be the perfect partner in the continuing of African suffering and perpetual poverty they have created for the majority of the planet.

    Facts:

The World Bank is an American bank for profit like any other and not the development bank for the developing nations like most people tend to assume. Their heavily interest loans and staggering penalty fees are the tools required to cripple your likes in government in poor nations resulting in self interest policies by those entities at the detriment of their ignorant populace.

The World Trade Organization is designed to keep the poor, poor and the rich, rich hence the talks have stalled for a long time now over reform to bring equality to the unfair world trade system and processes…. Ivory Coast and Ghana are the biggest produces of the raw form of Coco but yet they earn less than 20% of income generated from by products produced by Western conglomerates.

The UN is a talk shop which only affect change in the interest of its most powerful members (West, China and Russia). Otherwise how could they quickly authorize force in protecting Libyan civilians while ignoring the plight of Ivorian civilians for weeks before that. The answer is simple, Oil and the geo-political strategies of your friends that you can’t breath without.

The list is endless but I shall stop here for now and hope you pause and think before you utter nonsense in defense of your beloved West.

    Peace my brother.

Your logic is very sad, so if a lion comes into your house and kill your 6 month old baby, would that be ok because its done by the king of the jungle and your baby happen wake it up by pissing on its leg?

Brother wake up, if you condemn one wrong, you must and should condemn the other. Killing and oppression is inhumane irrespective of the perpetrator or the victim. Justice is universal not selective. If you even have the lightest bit of background information about the atrocities committed by the powerful nations you wouldn’t waste my time with your response.

Sometimes I hear Western media talk about illegal war, UN sanctioned war or preemptive war, since when is war legal or killing is warranted unless in the immediate case of self defense not in the preemptive manner of the mighty because of their own intelligence and suspicion. The moral debate over the lawfulness of any war is complex and the true enemy of mankind is war itself.

Insulting all Southerners because of a few ignorant individuals on this website is not the wise thing to do and it makes you appear childish. South Sudan has many intelligent people and notable intellectuals who have served global humanity at international levels and continue to do so.

I am not against humanitarian intervention but sadly most if not all interventions are advanced by self interest and not for the sake of universal justice and humanity hence am against the current standards of foreign intervention.

But I do hope you realize that the darfur crisis was/ is made worse by the NCP and there has been grave crimes against humanity committed there. Although I fear any foreign military intervention is unlikely to be driven by sympathy for the Darfuri civilians but more by geo-politics and the ample deposits of uranium in the region.

The government need to define it’s support toward the palestian problem. There is not any problem in giving humantrian assistances ( food, health care ) to the patestinian people as the other countries are doing and through the legal palestinian’s boby in dafa. But giving arms to defectist like hamas is not a sober decision that is worlth support, because it endangers the security of our own country.please avoid such premature association with these illagel organisations.associating with them means entering into war with a jewish state. At this stage SUDAN is not ready to enter into such irresponsible war.For sudan to get lifted from the list of countries supporting terrorism, it should deter her illagel relation with these kind of organisations.
