South Sudan looks to improve state media before independence

By Bonifacio Taban Kuich

April 15, 2011 (BENTIU) – A delegation from the South Sudan President’s office visited Unity state yesterday to assess what improvements need to be made to the state Ministry of Information and Communication and the department of radio and television broadcasting ahead of South Sudan’s independence on July 9.

The southern government intends to standardize media facilitation across South Sudan ahead of secession. Assessment teams will be visiting the ten states of South Sudan.

Martinson Otoromoi chief of staff from the office of the South Sudan President told Sudan Tribune on Friday that the visit Bentiu was to prepare South Sudan’s media for independence.

Otoromoi said that he hoped improvements would allow the government and President to be able to communicate better with citizens of the new state.

Unity state has a strong radio broadcast presence, led by government owned radio stations, FM 99 and Medium Wave 558 KHZ, which broadcast across South Sudan and neighboring Uganda, DR Congo and Kenya.

The challenges of the state government in running these outlets include lack of reliable electricity, internet connectivity and payment of staff. These issues were brought to the attention of the delegation.

Chief of staff Otoromoi said that ultimately it will be for the South Sudan President to decide on these kinds of requests that will come from all ten southern states.

When did radio and broadcasting issues become duties of Office of the President? This is unnecessary duplication of roles with Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
As long as those officials in Audit Chamber and Anticorruption Commission do not know what they are doing in this government, unscrupulous government officials will continue to look for ways of utilizing their budgets on handling issues that are not under their portfolio.
This is another scam project those government officials create to reduce their budgeted funds by proposing huge cash for doing nothing or handling duties that are not theirs.
Shame on you Otoromoi for implementing this broad daylight corruption.

    Dear Readers,

What is really generating excitement is the idea that people’s votes will actually count. South Sudan desperately hope there will be independent in July/9/2011 about new Nation. The ballot-stuffing and voters-referendum, they were so familiar with.

But Southern Sudanese ‘s goverment are not just measured in fraudulent way – they are also measured in casualties of problem violence. And the run-up to this vote has been brutal.

Campaign group of United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) has recorded nearly 1000 killings linked to be targeted of unlawful. There have been assassinations, killing, and random attacks on civilians across the counties of South Sudan.

In North Sudan, you can’t hear of killing civilians any how. But i don’t know why these things is common in South Sudan.

I think the person who pose here against delegation from President office to the States, checking states owned radios and TVs doesn’t understand anything. My friend they are there to assess difficulties facing state media interm of equipment and infrastructure. How can you be against such?

Anyway, I think it good to tell you openly that your opposition attitude has just blinded you into the extent that you cannot see development process. I know you might not be in South Sudan to understand what people really need. If You talk about corruption in government activities, I think you don’t really have an idea what the word “corruption means or you are misusing the word” President has powers constitutionally with some allocation that he can use for upgrading government activities in the state and anywhere in the Country including media at state level.

It is his role to findout how media is working at state level. Media strengthening is very important so that every citizen in South Sudan can have access to information. Now you are just using this website to abusing and challenge Leaders activities without justification, I know you don’t have idea how media help people.

You are trying to fight corruption but are not tax payer in South Sudan. Please continue with what you are doing wherever you are and leave president alone let him do his constitutional duty. I really thank President for such a wise decision. God be with you.

Please delegation go a head and do your work and don’t listen to this person here who doesn’t understand anything at all, but fun of critics that has no basis.

    Thanks

    Bol,
I am not criticizing for the sake of criticism.
This work belongs to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Office of the President can request information about broadcasting equipment and facilities at federal and states level through Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Office of the President can than verify that information supplied either by sending information and communication director to states or use other means to verify that information supplied by Ministry of Information.
Going to states to gather equipment is not competence for Office of the President.
