North Sudan rejects extension of CPA deadline, official

April 19, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – North Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party (NCP) sees no justification for extending the deadline of the 2005’s peace deal with South Sudan, which expires when the region declares full independence in July this year, a party official said on Tuesday,

The NCP’s vice-president Nafi Ali Nafi, who also serves as an assistant to the party’s chairman and Sudan’s President Omar Al-Bashir, said that his party rejects calls for extending the interim period required under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) whose signing in 2005 ended nearly half a century of intermittent civil wars with South Sudan.

Under the CPA, the south voted almost unanimously earlier this year to secede when the CPA’s six-year interim period comes to an end on July 9. However, the two sides remain engaged in talks with little progress over a variety of post-secession arrangements, including oil revenues, citizenship, debts, assets, Nile water shares and international agreements.

“We neither desire that nor see a justification for it,” he told the country’s official news agency SUNA, denying accusations of procrastination over post-referendum issues by South Sudan’s ruling party, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM.

The newly appointed U.S Special Envoy for Sudan Princeton Lyman underlined upon his appointment last month that there were 100 days to resolve all the outstanding issues before the 9 July deadline.

Lyman also raised concerns during his trip to the Ethiopian capital Addis Abab earlier this month over the situation in Sudan’s western region of Darfur, where an eight-year conflict between the government and rebel groups claimed the lives of nearly 300,000 and displaced 2.7 millions, according to UN figures.

“We’re also deeply concerned…about Darfur, about the continuing problems of violence there, the many, many, almost 2 million people who have been displaced and who are still living in camps,” he said.

Commenting on the U.S diplomat’s concerns, Nafi argued that these concerns were unjustified because the situation in Darfur was “stable to a great extent.”

Its extremely upsetting to ask for the extension of the interim period when the South is already tired of cannibalistic actions of Arabs. We want to part on 9th july.

    Mapuor,

This is the incompetent GoSS headed by their semi-illiterate president Kir. We have a lot of learned south Sudanese around the globe. What is it that we can not do without extension of interim period? What do our leaders think NCP will agree if the interim period is extended? Something NCP can not do in the last 5 years, you expect them to agree in 6 months? The rest of the outstanding issues will be handled at foreign affairs offices of the two states. To hell with those asking for interim period extension!!!

    Tiger,

This is an old CD casttee that Kir was busy fighting. Do you know who am I? May be people like you who have never been to front line can claim to be a fighter. You know only supporting blindly. What a pity! please know how to analyze ideas. Kir’s ability has proved beyond doubt that he is indecisive, harboring corrupt officials special from dinka tribe a case in point: the two relieved ministers of Finance and now police director, the so called Achil. Dinka needs to differentiate between public and private property. Otherwise, all of us will be a witness to this chaotic kir’s administration result- many rebellions.
