S. Sudan: Senior WFP official killed in Jonglei state

April 26, 2011 (JUBA) – Unknown assailants on Thursday shot dead a senior from the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) official in Jonglei state, raising more fears of escalating insecurity in South Sudan ahead of its independence declaration due in July.

Santino Pigga Wani, who worked as WFP’s senior programme assistant was ambushed by his attackers in Duk County of Jonglei state, while on a mission with members of the organization’s cooperating partner, Joint Aid Management (JAM).

“It is with profound sadness that the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today confirmed the death of one of its staff members in a fatal attack in Southern Sudan,” a statement on WFP’s website said.

Further, Valerie Amos, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator. condemned Santino’s murder saying “These incidents demonstrate complete disregard for the safety and security of humanitarian personnel and I condemn them in the strongest possible terms”.

She also voiced grave concern for the safety of two missing staff of the International Organization for Migration and called for their safe return. They went missing after being forced to drive into an area of active conflict on 19 April.

The motive of the killing, according to sources within the organization, still remains unknown, although his death has been linked to a failed robbery attempt.

Born in Western Equatoria state, the deceased reportedly joined WFP in 2004, serving in various positions within the organization until he was promoted to the post he held prior to his death.

In an email sent to Sudan Tribune, Amor Almagro, WFP’s Sudan public information officer said the organization regrets his untimely death. WFP’s Sudan country director, Amer Daoudi could not be reached for a comment on the matter.

WFP is the world’s largest humanitarian agency and currently provides food assistance to 1.5 million people in South Sudan, assisting returnees to the south, and helping communities to recover from decades of instability and conflict.

Sudan is categorized by the UN as a low-income, food-deficit country and ranks as number 147 out of 177 countries and territories on the 2007/8 Human Development Index.

South Sudan is due to become independent in July after voting overwhelmingly for independence in a referendum agreed as part of a 2005 peace deal. Despite the deal the region has been blighted by insecurity caused by cattle raiding and conflict over resources. Since last year’s elections there are now seven armed groups fighting the southern government, over grievances from alleged electoral fraud to corruption and bad governance.

May almighty God rest his soul in peace! This is a tragic news. Those WFP staffs are working day & night for the betterment of our people. The GOSS must bring the assailants to justice. Organizations who wish to come to the South will be afraid to come & work in the South because of an insecurity. The government must protect those helpless NGOS staffs from arms outlaw gangsters.

May Almighty God rest his soul. May Almighty God punish those who killed Santino by denying them access to food and water for just two weeks so that they feel the effect of breaking the chain of food supplies.

It’s true that they don’t want Equatorians to work there specially at such position, yet they are the one most desperately for free food. Now if the WFP decided to withdraw, where will they get food from? Will they come and buy food from Western Equatoria Sate?

Let my Equatorian brothers and sisters come back home with their experiences and work for little salary and stay longer.

I want to see how many will condemn this barbaric act here today, if not then the cycle must continue, why not? We also know how to kill.

What on earth the government of Kol Manyang is doing in Jonglei State? Why do you let the people bit the hand that feeds them?

This is a very sad news to all Equatorians, because it costs a lot of resources to raise him (Wani)up and educate him.

May his soul rest in eternal life.

TO GOSS and particulary uncle KUOL MANYANG JUUK, we here your calls for more educated southerners to join the building of our new born country and yet you fail to secure them. What are we to do when the guys doing the right things are targeted?

This gentlemen left his place of birth to work where his country men need him and he was not shown the same respect

May the Almighty shower His blessings and Mercy on the Martyr Santino Pigga Wani.

This is very bad indeed. Killing a humanitarian worker who provides food to the untouchables?

What a shame on the GOSS! Not a single word from the corrupted Junta. No condolence, no apology or investigation. Nothing! Cry my beloved South.

WFP is providing food assistance to many people in Southern Sudan, assisting returnees to the south, and helping communities to recover from decades of instability and conflict. What a shame on SPLA intelligence. They are good at killing, stealing, raping, setting fire and committing all crimes the Devil Himself would not dare to commit. How can the GOSS bring peace to those who are helping our people, if SPLA/M is killing our people every now and then?

I am sure that our image has been further destroyed. International world is watching what is going on in the South. No one will be coming to help the collapsing SPLA/M. No sane one on earth wants them to continue for a second.

Let our patriot fighters and political parties work fast to remove this dark stain defacing Southern Sudan. Let the honest and South-loving members of SPLA join the fighting SSLA.

Let us liberate the South from these scum and losers.

I hope our heroes fighting the GOSS will succeed soon to stop all this nonsense.

    Long live Southern UNITED Sudan.

    Down with SPLA/M

    Mr. Adam,
You are the suspect and the one who killed a Humanitarian worker. Do not accuse the SPLM/A. Bandits are not the SPLM/A. If you want to risk your lives it is up to you. The reason i said you the suspect is your support to the rival who are fighting GOSS. The International Community is already aware of the suspect. It will not be far from George Athor and Gadet gruops.

Let me assure you that, what you long for all these years will be granted to you. All Government officials from GOSS, all tribes including Dinka strongly condmen this brutal act of killing an innocent person. Do not pretend yourself.

    @Omoni,
I deeply regret the death of this individual, but did anyone find out why he was killed? I assume that this individual (the deceased) must have been using economic terms to save UN money, while depriving hungery folks with food.

Back in 1990, some of our own who were UN employees used to try to convince UN officials who visited S.Sudan during those days…that there was no hunger there. …That all those people you see eating leaves have just hidden their foods and later when you are all gone, they will go and get their foods from hidding. We were bitter about those individuals. Hope that the current incident is different.
