According to the mayor of Rumbek, Sabit Chawop Mabor, the butchers were arrested because they increased the price of meat without consulting the office of the Town Council; a decision which he described as a “a total violation of law and regulations”.

Chawop said that legal charges have been levelled against them. He insisted that the Lakes state government would not permit an increase in meat prices.

He explained that unlike imported foodstuffs, meat is locally produced and therefore its pricing can be revised to the level of affordability for ordinary people.

He called on the public to exercise patience as his office tackles the matter, encouraging households to consider alternatives to meat, such as fish.

In the last two days meat in Rumbek market rose by 30 per cent, from 10SDG (US$3.7) per kilogram to 13SDG (US$4.9).

Leave the innocent man alone Mr Governor! I sense there’s no clear reason to arrest this poor hardworking man, since he’s doing all he could to make his end meet. He’s not ripping the ordinary people off, you do!Just put the law in place to make the working condition conducive enough for these public servant to do his or her job. Therefore, I urge Mr Mayay to reconsidered his decision and let the innocent man go.

Is this a priority in Lakes State? Who are those appealed, to be patient? Canivores?? What about your daily 15 Kgs of meat/day/table of every butcherman? Because you had dried some huge tones of meat that is why you advise the citizens to resort to fish and frogs? Ohh God see the belly corrupt officials in Lakes.

    Dear readers
I’m doubt traders may bribe Sabit Chawop with huge amount of money to silent him in order to increase the price of meat and others commodities in the market of Rumbek .The law should take drastic measures to stop whoever want to increase the price of meat .Cibipiath Junub Sudan for your information ,those of Sabit Chwop do not dried cow meats, but they do buy goats and chickens on daily basis . Let him continue to stop those butchers from increasing meat price. It ‘s helpful for those who have little money .Nothing wrong with Sabit

US Lifts Sanctions On Sudan’s Largest Bank

The Treasury Department on Thursday lifted sanctions on Sudan’s largest bank, after determining that the Sudanese government no longer holds a controlling interest in it, officials said.

The Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control posted notice on its website that Bank of Khartoum was removed from the blacklist, meaning it can seek the return of blocked assets and resume limited dealings with U.S. financial institutions.

The notice gave no reason for the de-listing, but Treasury officials said the bank’s privatization prompted the move. The bank, which has 17 branches in the capital and 33 branches nationwide, had been state-owned until about five years ago, when Dubai Islamic Bank became a 60% shareholder. Bank of Khartoum petitioned OFAC to be removed from the list, officials said.

The officials declined to comment on how many assets were unblocked.

The U.S. classifies Sudan as a state sponsor of terrorism; sanctions that generally bar U.S. banks from facilitating exports to the country and doing business with the Sudanese government remain in place.

Although most transactions involving Bank of Khartoum are still prohibited, U.S. financial institutions are authorized to transfer personal remittances to and from Sudan that are processed through the bank.

After years of violence, in January an overwhelming majority in the southern part of Sudan voted to secede from the north. The split is expected to become effective July 9.

President Obama said in February that he would review sanctions on Sudan, provided that the Sudanese government allows a peaceful transition to democracy in the South.

The government officials including the mayor of Rumbek town should not interfere with the markets. They should leave it to the law of supply and demand, that is economics. fixing prices is bad for the economy and source of creating the black markets. After all if the consumers are not satisfied with the prices given they are free to eat vegetables. Otherwise, that’s harassment. It is unacceptable and they should release the butchers unconditionally.
