Australia: violence overshadows Sudanese beauty pageant

By Julius N. Uma

April 29, 2011 (JUBA) – This year’s Miss South Sudan Australia (MSSA) beauty pageant ended in chaos as over 2000 youths gathered to witness the annually-held event in Melbourne, reportedly saw aggressive brawls.

The Australia-based International Business Times reported that Sudanese youths from across the country, gathered at Springvale hall over the long Easter break and instead resorted to fights, after-parties, and the excessive drinking of alcohol that marred the contest. These waves of anti-social acts reportedly spread in the neighbourhoods across Melbourne.

An annual event that brings together a community of Sudanese and non-Sudanese, young and old, to witness the unique talents and beauty of South Sudanese women, MSSA is inspired by the desire for education, identity, and inclusion in the South Sudanese community in Australia.

A lady, who preferred anonymity was quoted saying, “Sudanese boys are coming drunk and starting a brawl,” citing areas like Clayton, Braybrook and Ringwood which were reportedly awash with violence.

There was also a reported incident of a man allegedly attacked with a machete, while several residents injured in the various scuffles were reportedly rushed to nearby hospitals.

The annually-held Australian event is no stranger to controversy; last year violence rocked the occasion when those in attendance questioned the decision of the judges presiding over the pageant.

“These young drunken boys should consider the impact of their actions on the reputation of Sudanese people,” Akech Yangdit, a Sudanese journalist was quoted saying.

Yangdit mainly attributed the fracas to the after-party organisers, accused of having sold more tickets than what earmarked venues could accommodate.
“They rented a hall that probably fits 200 people and yet they issued tickets to over 2000 people,” Yangdit recounted, adding that, “This ignited anger among the waiting crowd who insisted on entering to the venues since they have bought tickets.”

Ken Jones, the area deputy police commissioner told the International Business Times that adopting new laws and lifestyles in a different country has always been a major problem among young refugees who flee their respective war-stricken countries.

First held in January 2007, MSSA is annually organised by BIGG 3RE ENT production company.

I wish everyone of us on this board would have posted a message that our country would benefit, instead of using abusive words.I condemn whoever made an illegal acts and I hope our community in Australia should probably understand the reasons made them to leave their respective country so fighting is totally unacceptable in order to enjoy the life they have dreamed of!

    Ayuel,

True! others will never grow to differentiate between few individuals and the community they were raised in.

Derogatory remarks with geese of tribal enormity will go no where.

Our people in general must learn how to appreciate and accept responsibilities where applicable. Violence help no community to develop, nor build on their dignity. Our exiled Southern Sudanese in Australia must learn some peaceful ways to solve differences. You can’t be in the West and still act like cave-man.

Let the Australian Government deport those animals home so that they can their brothers in fighting. You ran away from fighting and there you are fighting again, what type of human beings are they? They spoiling the names of South Sudanese all over due to their disrespectful behaviors. With all the educations that you got from there and you don’t transform in to human up to now then it’s better to teach animals may be they will understand better.

Hearing such can really make one feel ashamed as a Southerner.
If we don’t leave this animal mentality then nobody will like us in this world.

    @Makue

This is very embarrassing to all of us.
How can really one feel proud to be a South Sudanese when are brothers who got a little education abroad still behave like that? How do think the will look at us? What can we do to transform since education has failed to transform us? Now what change can they bring home?
Are we the people of South Sudan cursed in this world? If so then why can’t we repent to God so that our sin will be forgiven?

Attention! attention Naath community at large!!!!
Please pay attention to the following news sited on Sudan.net!!
It is said that Malaak Ayuen Ajok told the Bor Globe over a phone consultation. “Tanginye with his group will face a martial court. He surrendered after SPLA forces blocked escaping venues during the course of operation, otherwise, they were fighting and anybody else in hideouts if caught in the same process will deserve the same treatment.”

General Tanginya of Naath!! is going to be killed or imprisoned by Dinka Bor tribal militia, SPLA, as a reprisal to their so-called Bor massacre which is being allegedly said to have been committed by forces belong to General Tanginya during the confusion times in the southern Sudan, i.e. during SPLA and Ayna nya two clashes in 1990s!!

Naath, SPLA is testing your tolerance and reactions before they embark on arresting and killing all Naath who have been blacklisted by the tribal regime and its militia, SPLA!!

Now, where are those morons of SPLA/M Naath if their warrior tiger Tanginya will be executed in their wash and remain doing nothing about it??

Where is John Luk Jock and his seven minsters, if general Tangingya is going to be exceuted by Malaak Ayuen and his Dinka Bor SPLA militia!

Malaak Ayuen, you have no any convincing reason whatsoever to trial general Tanginya and Mabor in a martial court given that you deceived him that he is covered by the amnesty awarded by your tribal General Sulpha kir macheithdit, for that reason, general Tanginya trusted you and accepted to be incorporated or included into your SPLA militia, however, during the process of the integration, your forces ambushed him and his unprepared armed forces to kill him!! you took the advantage of the helpless man, which led to his detention by your militia and now talking about trailing him in the military court where he may end up being killed of improsomied!!

Trialing him in your militia court is a gross violation of human right!! if you will not give up and continue anyhow, then we, the Naath community will no have any option only to kill any important leader of your community like Koul Manyang for example!! leave Genral Tang alone or else Naath Fangak and Naath lou will take Jonglei by surprise and Bor will be wipe out for good!

Naath don’t let that happen in your watch!

There is no freedom of speech in this website. Why do you delete my and some people’s comments? In a society where there’s no freedom speech,we shall never grow intellectually and morally. My comment was number seven yesterday, and there were about 13 comments, but this morning all those comments have have been deleted.Grow up people.Learn to be tolerant of diverse opinions.I said so Sudanese have been cursed. They are fighting here in South Sudan, and yet they are also fighting in Australia. Then I mentioned corruption in South Sudan.

    Supporter of Naath Cause,

The article has nothing to do with General Tanginya, it’s about the violence during the Sudanese beauty pageant in Australia. I read all of your comments on this website and everything you talk about involves Dinka Bor. If Dinka Bor has become a disease for you, then you need a medical help bro. Your just a mad dog who is confused and insane…Nobody needs you in South Sudan affairs because your are not delivering any information that will unite us but instead you preach tribal war………

That’s a shame, I was at that occasion myself and when I got the whole street was on lockdown by the police as if they were after some criminals. Here in Australia these immature ignorant idiots have by far ruined South Sudanese reputation here in Australia. Sudanese communities need to come together in alias with Australian government to reach a conclusion to resolve and put an end to this chaotic behaviour in Australian by deporting these boys back home. Instead of crabbing these opportunities by the horns and use to their advantage for the future of South Sudan, they rather tolerate it. I am sure deportation back to South Sudan would knock some sense into these boys and even help clean up their act here in Australia.
