UNDP train chiefs in Unity state, S. Sudan

May 1, 2011 (BENTIU) – The UN Development Programme (UNDP) trained 60 chiefs in Unity state between 29 April – 1 May. The workshop aimed to strengthen the customary courts system through developmental training for the traditional authorities. The traditional authorities came from both Rubkotna and Guit county.
The state minister of local government and law enforcement Joseph Gai Riak addressed the group of chiefs on 1 May during the training at Bentiu census hall.
Riak said the chiefs should promote the enforcement of law and order in traditional councils.
Juoy Machar Turoal, a chief from Bentiu town, said that the role they play in the community is to set up a peaceful environment. He added that the current South Sudan transitional constitution has adopted some aspects of traditional justice.
Wieu Stefano, UNDP program assistant said they will be organising the same training in various counties in Unity state. He added that one of their aims was to highlight the importance of chief councils using good judgment when punishing criminals in the communities.
