Unity State rejects redeployment of Sudanese troops to protect oil fields

By Bonifacio Taban Kuich

April 2, 2011 (BENTIU) – The government and parliament of the Unity state decided during the weekend to reject the deployment of 300 northern Sudanese troops in the areas of oil production to protest recent Bashir’s statement on Abyei.

Khartoum and Juba agreed to re-deploy 300 JIU soldiers to the Manga, Toor, Toma South, Naar and Tharjath oil fields of Unity state to guard the oil production areas until the official declaration of South Sudan’s independence on 9 July 2011. Bentiu government also endorsed the redeployment plan.

The Unity state government held a joint council of ministers meeting with the state legislative assembly on 29 April to deliberate on the deployment of JIU from the Sudan Army Forces (SAF) and to discuss President Omer al Bashir’s recent inflammatory speech declaring Abyei as part of the north.

nity State governor Taban Deng Gai, already on Friday 28 April told Sudan Tribune that he called an immediate meeting of the council of ministers and
state legislative assembly to brief them about the policy used by JIU and SA.

After intense debate, the Unity state council of ministers and the state assembly came up with a resolution to not accept the step taken by northern government to redeploy JIUs troops in Unity state.

“We request the Government of South Sudan to provide quick solutions to this provocative penetration by the JIU from SAF, knowing that the rebel militias will use the presence of SAF bases as a forward position for morale, information and logistical support to destabilise South Sudan,” said State minister of information and communication, Gideon Gatpan Thoar,

“We ask the Khartoum regime not to use the out-dated Paluoc Resolutions to provoke hostilities in the oilfields ahead of South Sudan’s independence and demand that the Khartoum government honours the international court of arbitration [decision on Abyei,” Thoar further said.

The ruling parties in north and south Sudan respectively the National Congress Party (NCP) and the Sudan people’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) agreed in the Paluoc Resolutions last December before the referendum to deploy JIU form both SAF and SPLA to guard the oil production areas in the Unity state.

Thoar added that the process of South Sudan independence is guided by the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and that the northern army should no longer be allowed to operate in South Sudan because of recent developments including the SAF and JIU withdrawal, the expulsion of Southern MPs from the national parliament in Khartoum, and the numerous militias operating in greater Upper Nile region, which the government of south Sudan believes are being backed by Khartoum.

Unity state assembly, its a good gesture but don’t add Abyei clause to it. Abyei was sold by poor Dinkas in exchange for food. its not your business. let them go and get it back. just mind your own business.

    MR. Bonifacio Taban Kuich.

That is exactly the Unity State and its citizens must do it.We are all Southern Sudanese no matter how different lanuages we spoke we are one and no matter how much suffering we have been faces under Khartoum rules in 55 years that affected all none Arab in the Sudan, we will united at their eyes when it come to Southern Sudan and we must deal with Khartoum government by all mean. The statement which indictment Omar Hassan Ahmed al Bashir gave in South Kordofan State is not acceptable and even if there was no statement made by him still redeploment at this short time must not be accepted.

They have already rejected Southern Sudanese MP in the Old Sudan government saying, there is need to work with Southern Sudan since they already vote for independence same thing in the oil production areas the Southern Sudanese citizens should not accept none Southerners to redeploying their troop in Unity State nor others area for Southern Sudan nation. He was threating both South Korfofan State and Southern Sudan because of Abyei and the time for fear has gone since the SPLA/SPLM started and this is the time for all Southern Sudan to leave all nonesense of creating rebels and come back to fight the real main problem.

May God blessing all Southern Sudanese and their good friends. Southern Sudan Oyeee. Junibin Oyeee, Blue Nile people Oyeee, Nubian people Oyeee, Darfurian people Oyeee and may God help you and make Khartoum government isolate from the rest of the Sudanese Black African.

Awesome wende Gai! You’ve clearly demonstrate the ability to leads, and I’m assured those cynics idiots within the Unity State citizenry who’re opposed to your being on the top will clearly be annihilated.Guys, I hope you will now know the reason why his Excellency Mayardit didn’t hint the sham calls to removes His Ex.Governor Taban D.Gai on the top job.No mercy this time, and there’s no point these thugs should come back anyway. The word is ,we’re two sovereign State, and nobody should dares to cross this red line without any go a head from the other side.Otherwise, it will be term as a clear violation of Sovereignty right of the concerns nation. And this may re-ignites war in any form. However,if there’s any mutual understanding among they two sides, then it might be easy to let go the business activities as usual as they may be needed.Otherwise, Governor Taban is undisputably right to reject those thugs, and there’s no question about that.

Taban Deng Gai, that is kind of leadership we want to see in South Sudan.

Good job for showing your care and protection to the people of Unity State and your concerns for South Sudan. JIU should not be redeployed in oil field whatsoever. GoSS should open its eyes and think wise.

Khartoum is playing indirect invasion game and Juba is sleeping. I would love to see other States governors bordering North to take the same stand as Governor Gai has done.

There should be no leeway to let Khartoum take an advantage of those fake agreements. Please Mr. Governor, continue with your rejection, we do not want to see Bashir’s troops in the South. God bless Unity State and Bless South Sudan.

    Mr. hero,

The decision made to reject JIU was not made by the cowardice individuals. Instead, it was made by the brave Nuer Governor, H.E. Taban Deng Gai. The Dinka of Abei led by Deng Majiok did not resist Arab at that time as Taban does rather than give them land and kissed Arabs’ asses for the sake of food. Now we Dinka around the world we are crying looking for help from the mighty Nuer. So let be honest when looking help.

Congratulation mr.governor.accept what is right but reject what is not rigth because not all that what always SPLM is doing are good.SPLM always is being defeated by the NCP.if they have sensitive mind they would have not allowed such nonsense to happened.NCP expelled Southern MPs from Khartoum while they knew it well that the end of the interim period will be on the 9 July but they did it purposely, yes if it’s to be the retaliation the south must do it.300 SAF what for? we have SPLA they are our National army and they have right to control our wealth. All SAF must not temper again to enter into the Southern territories whatever to in an oil fields or for anything else.Unity State government oyeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

    Dear: General public

Taban Deng Gai is no win situation because allowing JIU back into oil fields has the security implications for the whole Unity states and Upper Nile regions. Therefore, let the Dinka fight their own war in Abyei!

By not also allowing them back also affects the oil production. which i wholeheartedly support since the oil is being used to enriches these Dinka thugs in Juba and Warrap, Jonglei states.

Production of oil must stop! so that our state oil won’t be used by these thugs in within these mentioned states.

    Mala,
I saw your comment on one of the article here pretending to be Bor man. I notice that. Mr. Doublesomthing was critising all of us here about mentioning tribes when i said after independent war videos will be played to see yourselves in struggle. I warn you and liberator not to call Dinka cowards. Let us wait till independent. The war between Dinka and Nuer will not take 21 years or 21 days to finish. Do not provoke the situation. You are touching the wounds. Who has forgotten the way you ambushed and killed Dinka on the way to Ethiopia since from 1983-1987? We still recall those days. Please, Please, you will regret later. We are all here supporting the decision of Taban unless you oppose that decision. When did Unity and Upper Nile States became stronger SPLA/M base? For unity State to be a SPLA/M base started in 2002 and Upper Nile in 2008-2009. What do you want to tell us? Who is coward in this case? How long SAF have been in Unity State and where were you? All the arms and ammunition you got from Ethiopia were turned against Dinka. Who does not know all these? We are keeping records of people like you and liberator. We shall deal with such People after Independent.

    Dear Readers,

Yes, I for one supports the clear decision being taken by Taban’s government to reject this illegal deployment of troops on our soil. I think the government in Khartoum are very naive about the matter and repercussion of such moves.

Now we are asking the military leadership in Juba to responsive constructively to this matter.
