May 11, 2011 (BOR)-After two months of preparation, Jonglei government officially declared its readiness for the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) 16 May anniversary celebrations.
Maar said this year’s celebration in Bor is crucial for Southerners since the 1983 rebellion that will be concluded with the decleration of the independence of the Republic of South Sudan on 9 July 2011, began in Bor.
The north-south civil war in Sudan that killed over 2 million people started broke out for the second time in 1983 in Bor with the first bullet shot by then major, Kharbino Kuanyin Bol, with less than 500 troops in garrison 105 in the small town of Malualchat at around 5.00am local time, five miles away from Bor along Juba-Bor road.
In 2005 north and South Sudan signed a peace agreement, a stipulation of of which was the right of the South Sudanese to self-determination. In January 2011 the South Sudanese voted overwhelming in a plebiscite in favour of secession from north Sudan.
Governor Maar also said the insecurity in the state should not dissuade guests from attending as the cattle raiding issues are far from the capital, Bor.
He said the state has a new ministry and a new Egyptian built and funded clinic, scheduled to be opened officially by the South Sudan president, Salva Kiir on the celebratory day.
The celebration plans received mixed responses from Bor dwellers. An SPLA Major from Khoriom Battalion, John Gatwich, who lost his left leg in the war, said that “the greatest and longest world civil war” having reached the “light of independence” should be celebrated.
On the other hand, an anonymous returnee from the capital in north Sudan, Khartoum, said he did not see it as a day of celebration. He said they had suffered for more than 20 years in Khartoum at the hands of people who had been incensed by the actions of the SPLA. He said his father was killed in Khartoum by National Islamic Front [NIF] in 1990 after he was accussed of supporting the SPLA. He said he had nothing to thank the SPLA movement as he can not return to his home in Khartoum.
NIF has been influencing Sudanese politics since the 1960’s. It is run by Hassan al-Turabi. NIF created the National Congress Party which is headed by Omar al-Bashir and rules Sudan. After a rift, Bashir and Turabi have had a tumultuos relationship, with Turabi spending time under house arrest and in jail.
He said the government of South Sudan in Juba and the states does not give jobs to people like him, who returned from Khartoum with Secondary certificates in Arabic. He said the government is favouring the East African returnees with Secondary certificates in English.

Celebration of May 16 annivassary is the right decission meant for the right purepose of Total Freedom of Southerners from oppressors and Presecutors.
Give peace and development a chance otherwise we shall wrangle in the circle of Tribalism and Clanism which do not reflect our real image as Southerners who eat on the same “Bloody Pot”
I would urge all our fellows brothers in the Bush struggling to strangulate the New State from Development must have core decission of comming back and Join our Hands as ONE Bloody in one State and Develop it. She needs us if wedon’t her the Virgin South Sudan.

Dinka Twic East and Twic West Oyee!!!
History is yours both tribes: John Garang De Mabior and Kerubino Kuanyin De Bol. Starts with Dinka Twic/Tuic and end historical with Dinka Twic personnel. Please, guys don’t Dinka Twic East as Bor. These tribes are having most differences in characteristics and language as well.
Truth will not be still from both Dinka Twic East and Twic West Mayardit.
Mading Ngeth Agok deserves begin there, but when it comes to tribes don’t mess with Dinka Twic/Tuic history by give it to Dinka Bor.

i am very sorry to response to the person whom has been reported as returnee from Khartoum and that automatically mean who has not took any part during the civil war in sudan….sorry for losing your father, but than she/he said; “he has nothing to thanks Juba government” now take this simple formula…go back to Khartoum government who killed your father as you acquired Arabic language just as simple as that….for your information, south Sudan will have not room for Arabic literates speakers….now if the Juba government could give jobs to those Arabic academia it would mean we an “abomination”. so we are sorry an we wish you safe journey back to Khartoum government.

In fact, I am supporting statement of Haak to this guy who returned from North. He shouldn’t said he has nothing to thank SPLA/M, because he father wasn’t killed by SPLA but by NIF as he mentioned. He father died for liberation why should he not thanks SPLA. Does it mean he was not supporting his father for liberation? Does he want to tell us that liberation is bad? Anyway, he has been living under salvery he doesn’t know freedom.
Having Arabic Secondary school certificate is not bad, but you have to work hard to learn English so that you can get job. Please don’t think narrowly as people do in the north, here is South where people work hard to be recognizes.
I support 16th May celebration in Bor.

I would really like to Congratulate the GoSS for giving all the Southerners the glimpse opportunity in the process of understanding of WHERE we started this liberation. No mistake should be made to understand that our liberation started with the SPLA or at Bortown, but way in history and with White Flag to be exact. The last uprising or the break of 2nd Civil war did started at Bor area, and the Batallion of course was led by Nyuon and others. Prior to that, we had uprising in Pochalla and Pibor. We recognized all the movements that had keep this liberation in people mind, esp the SANU, Anyanya, and then SPLA who finalized it and this is why we’re commemorating the struggle in Bortown, the last time before we’re recognize as the world newest country.
I would also say sorry to the guy who lost his father in Khartoum according to the article, but we should know that Southern Sudanese had suffered millions of life and most of those are fathers of ours too. Now, we all have to respect and recognize their heroism in the struggle for our freedom. If some people are not appreciative of the movement, then there have been thousands hiding in Khartoum and some actually fought against the uprisings, the borders are open to Khartoum, they could go back anytime. We’re free here in the South and anyone who want freedom is welcome, not closed district anymore. We’re working toward the betterness of our government, we have long way to go, and with enduring peace, come the process to better foundation and road to prosperity. We need patience and a dream toward better Southern Sudan because as the saying goes “when there is a will there is a way”.
As for the Arabic Language literates, Southern Sudan is struggling and not everyone is employed, not even 50% of employment. I don’t think people are favored because of English literacy, but due to lack of jobs. However, my opinion in the long run is, we should not enforce Arabic as our National language, it was introduced to us as a language of domination, colonialism really if you go back to when it was declared in the South. Also you should know that our first English literate in the 60s to 80s were denialed of Jobs in Khartoum openly in order to kill their ambition toward learning English. But I am not endorsing anyone at all to be discriminate against base on any other then qualifications that related to the job.
Last but not least, I am from the Bor area or Twic to be specific. My dear brothers who wrote earlier and those who will write or read these responses, please keep your responses to the point of the article. I am not proud of particular people in my country, but for all of you whether you collaborated with our enemies in the past, or you were part of the Liberation in one way or the other. SPLA, Anyaya and SANU are liberation’s bodies that stood for all Southerns and those marginalized in Sudan as a whole. Please, understand that opinion as above that point to favored the citizens of old Upper Nile are irritating and neglecting others,”We” are all proud is very inclusive.
SPLA fought for the freedom of all southerners and it will remain that way to stand for all Southerners, you may be proud that the rebellion that brought freedom initiated at your neighborhood.

16 may anniversary celebration is unstoppable by anyone because it was the day when Southerners show the world that we are not slave of Arabs, they took arm against Arab.
we are now enjoying freedom now in southern sudan because of what our founders fathers of SPLA/M did about 28 years on that day. so let’s appreciate them by celebrated that day..
