In a meeting on Thursday between the Vice President, Riek Machar Teny, and the Indian Ambassador to Sudan, Avanindra Kumar Pandy, the diplomat assured that the Republic of India will be one of the first countries to recognise the independence of South Sudan after 9 July.

The people of South Sudan voted overwhelmingly by over 98% in favour of secession from the rest of Sudan in an internationally monitored referendum on self-determination which was conducted in January 2011. The plebiscite came as a result of the 2005 peace deal which ended 21 years of civil war between North and South.

President Omer Hassan Al Bashir of Sudan accepted the outcome of the vote, saying it was expressing the will of the people of the semi-autonomous region.

Pandy also informed the Machar that his country would send a high level delegation to Juba to participate in the formal declaration of South Sudan’s independence on 9 July. He said India will also upgrade its current consulate in Juba to a higher diplomatic mission.

The meeting also stressed the importance of economic cooperation between South Sudan and India, which has a population of over one billion people and a burgeoning economy.

South Sudan is currently lobbying for recognition after 9 July. The leadership has dispatched senior officials of the government to hand-deliver invitations to foreign dignitaries in Africa to attend the day of its independence proclamation.
