Speaking to Sudan Tribune on Friday in Bor, deputy governor, Hussein Maar Nyuot said the state the inception the length of the postponment willl be disclosed after meetings are held with the Government of South Sudan (GoSS) in Juba.

Maar said his state needs more time and money to extend the airstrip to accommodate planes landing and taking off on the celebratory day. They need to improve existing roads connecting the new stadium with and town.

South Sudanese living in remote places started arriving in the state as the few vehicles were seen entering Bor town ahead of the day following the announcement made by Maar on 11 May, asking the Southerners to come to Bor to celebrate.
Addressing the pressmen on 11 May, Maar told journalists that Jonglei is almost finishing preparations, asking southerners to start coming to Jonglei to celebrate.
16 May is a commemoration of the day SPLA rebellion broke out in Malualchat, five miles outside Bor town where the first bullets were shot against the Khartoum regime.

Southerners will celebrate the independence of the Republic of South Sudan on 9 July 2011. This comes after a plebiscite in which the majority of South Sudanese voted in favour of separation from north Sudan. The vote was carried out in accordance with a stipulation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, which ended more than two decades of civil war between the neighbours in 2005.

Failure of south Sudan is eminent and I personally welcome it. The current people leading the government are never known for doing anything good except for theft and excessive drinking of alcohol.

    why postpone the celebration:
when foreign dignitaries and ambassadors are invited and have already schedule their plane ticket, when a plan is made and all the residents are informed and all preparations are made. How will Kiir becomes a recognized leader when he changes his and listen to internal pressure from Anti-Bor group. I hope May 16 is not being reserve for Ngundeng again people. This will be a shame on the government.

One would say that the government is working against Bor people. This is indicated by
    a) sacking and retiring 8 generals in one day from Bor years ago.

    b) Taking away John Garang institute from Moldova company by GoSS and then abandoning it without funding it.

For Bor and Jonglei to progressed, we have to focus on our area and development. We can do more than all these fools in the other states that are trying to press us down in any way. We can do a lot of things that they cannot even think of here in Jonglei and in Bor Town. They will have the money, but the will not know what to do with it.

How could we be getting mixed message from the same person within a period of 4 days? The first article published on the 11th of May mentioned that the annoucement was made by the Vice Governor and now just days later, they aren’t ready? I think the problem could be two fold; our government that doesn’t do budgetting and plans a head of time considering all the high expectations, and the publishers who never disclosed their identity while reporting to the public. I think publishers should know to take responsibilities and accountabilities of what they report on their own hands and name of the reporter be disclosed.
The validity of this article is still in doubt for me especially given the vicinity of the day ahead and what was reported on the 11th.
But could the day be extended, how would it be “the day” then, especially on this special expectation? Yes there’re financial difficulties, but this preparation should have been given one gult answer way earlier. I know there’re a lot to be done, not yet given priorities, may be, but I think we should have known better not to break this news if the state had this knowledge of un readiness.
Well, what could we do especially if this article is valid, it’s only a day away, I hope to see the real news & pictures of happy celebrators in 48hrs.

May 16 is not July 9. Foreign dignitaries are only invited for the July 9 and even if they are invited for the May 16, it’s like they were going to come any way. since, their is absolute break down of law & order in the state.

Ngundeng sacred day shall never be mixed with any day in South Sudan. And if it happens that they had to postponed the celebration of May 16 because it coincides with the return of the Prophet’s Dang, so be it!

Read the following post by Truthteller( a nuer guy)

    Breaking news,

May 16 celebrations in Bor is postponed.

Does any body know the reason behind the abrupt postponement of May 16 celebration which was supposed to take place in Bor next Monday?

This will be the third time May 16 has been deferred for another day since 2008.

The first time of deffering the date came when Ngundeng’s dang was brought from Britain on May 16. It was meant to coincide with this important date, but instead the celebrations of SPLA May 16 was abruptly shifted to 26.

Now I have been reading on Sudan Tribune that the celebrations will be done in Bor on May 16 by the GOSS with president Salva Kiir present, but here comes the abrupt postponement.

    What is going on?

Truthteller’s post contains the truth that Ngundeng Dang was arranged and returned intentionally on May 16 just to create confusion and divide people on tribal lines thus reducing patriotism. This is why Riek Machar left for Malaysia because he is against the celebration in Bor. Rumors had it that some Bhar el Ghazal officials are objecting the idea of holding any event in Bor, whether May 16 or July 9 independence . So this is why postponement of the event is happening because poor Kiir just listen to Riek Machar and his stupid Gogrial Advisers without using his alcohol demented brain.

It is very shocking that our government is postponing the May 16 again to another date rather than it essentail date. I think our goverment had completely forgotten how important it is for this day. for those who blame his Excellenece Vice President for postponement of this important day,I would aggregately disagreed with them becuase the Vice president is going for unscheduLe meeting with different Nations around the world; this meeeting is going to be the first meeting that South Sudan will be recognized and heard by other nations. According to the article that read, the Vice president is going to meet with other nations to discuss the choice that was made by people of South Sudan to have their own country and how we should move forward in the long term. I think May 16 should be celebrated in all ten State rather than spending too much money in one State preparation. Also, May 16 should be respected by all the parties in South Sudan, otherwise we are astray.

    South Sudanese,

See, I told you the day before yesterday that the celebration of SPLA in Bor was going to be postponed, but a certain uninformed guy calling himself hero said I was lying and insulted me as foolish.

Now who is foolish and uninformed hero?

This is not the first time to postpone the main celebration of SPLA day. It first occured when Ngundeng’s dang was taken to Juba in 2009 on 16 May to coincide with the celebration.

Instead, the celebration was abruptly shifted to 26 May and aboned the 16 May to Ngundeng’s dang arrival back to South Sudan.

May be Bor is not ready with accomodation, security and the rest that might have lingered in the ear of Mayardit.

    Truthteller,

We know you might adopt a name such as “Truthteller” to be able to convey your message but did you notice that you are exuding more falsehood than you expect? or do you do these intentionally due to your shortage of public adress know-how.

As Southerners we hail from one root and are united in the face of evil which dated back to 1955.
The cause which Southerners notably the Nuer had been fighting for against the British had its root in maginalization which has been fought by Southerners until they ultimately achieve it lately in the polls.

Whether the historical day of 16 may is altered by unforeseen circumstances and could not be celebrated in Bor should not be anyone’s joy because it depicts an honor to our martyrs whereby Nuers lost majority during the inception in 1980s.

Ngundeng’s dang is just an artefact that all Southerners share a respect given that it symbolise unity and culture as shown by his predictions.
Attributing it to just Nuer’s material and honor would mean losing grip of the well known fact that Ngundeng was and is a South material who is respected by his firm stand against colonization that led to his son’s demise.
John Garang once said that if you are a wise person who looks beyond your nose then you must aspire to define a problem or matter as a public issue to earn yourself friends and allias.

Thus, Whether Ngundeng’s dang arrival on 16 may had any intended malice to the peace loving nation would be known as times goes and a definite stand will be established.
“As the Bible has it that ” what will you gain if you own the whole world but subjected to lost of your life, I don’t thing owning Ngundeng solely and loss public honor or support would be meaningless.

Not to waste my words, I urge you to think twice before posting any thing on the public forum, to preserve both your dignity and your community’s.
I know this is an isolated case given that i know of some wise Nuer who do not allow their status being taken at odd face.

    Born to achieve,
Iam not saying that international meeting are Paramount important than May 16 but I think that it is why we have the President and vice president in the country to represent us both internally and externally. So if one of them went for business trip than one of them have to carry on with our country activities, for example, May 16 and many others. I also know that these foreigners did not fight for liberation but now as independent country we need some allies; recalled United State will never be strong without some allies. i also know that Bor town is one of historical town but we should not celebrate May 16 only in Bor but everywhere in entire South Sudan. for example, Kenyatta Day, Uhuru Day, Moi Day are commemorated in all over Kenya. the only thing that i disagreed is pushing away May 16 from it actual date

thank you for time and understanding.
