May 23, 2011 (BOR) – Jonglei state’s leadership and the high command of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA), South Sudan’s army have chosen Thursday, May 26 to celebrate the inception of the former rebel movement on May 16, 1983, in a meeting on Monday in Bor.

South Sudan will become independent in July after a peace deal allowed the South to vote for independence in a referendum agreed as part of a 2005 peace deal. The SPLA fought various Khartoum governments since its rebellion began in Bor in 1983.

The state’s Deputy Governor, Hussein Maar Nyuot, who returned from Juba on Monday, attended the meeting with SPLA officials to discuss the anniversary celebrations.

Speaking to Sudan Tribune at his home after the meeting, Maar said the 28th anniversary, in which Bor was chosen for the first time to host the celebration, is now finally ready to receive incoming attendees from May 24.

Maar highlighted the recent insecurity in Abyei describing it as” insurgency against civilians” of Abyei adding that the day will be celebrated as planned in Bor.

Maar said that the SPLA, who have been the official army of South Sudan since 2005, were responsible for sending invitations, adding it was not the responsibility of the government.

The SPLA was formed when a colonel in the Sudanese army, John Garang, launched a rebellion against the Government of Khartoum in May 16 1983 in Bor. Major Karubino Kuanyin Bol as the commanding senior officer shot the first bullet on May 16 1983 at Malualchat town, about five miles away from Bor town to dismantle Addis Ababa agreement.

May 16 is commemorated each year to mark the birth of the SPLA. Thousands of SPLA march in their barracks in celebration field after breaking the morning silence with gunshots fired into the air at 5:00am. This year the main celebration was not held on time in Jonglei due to delays to the preparations.

    Don’t distort history!

“The SPLA was formed when a colonel in the Sudanese army, John Garang, launched a rebellion against the Government of Khartoum in May 16 1983 in Bor. Major Karubino Kuanyin Bol as the commanding senior officer shot the first bullet on May 16 1983 at Malualchat town, about five miles away from Bor town to dismantle Addis Ababa agreement.”

John Garang followed Kerubino Kwanyin and William Nyuon in Itang, Ethiopia. Garang went without any force; only Rebecca Nyandeng, Mabior and Jok Muon who showed him the road to Itang.

Again, the bullet was not shot to dismantle the Addis Ababa agreement as the reporter wrote. The Addis Ababa agreement was already dismantled by Jaafer Nimeiri. That was why those of Vincent Kwany Latjor and Gordon Koang chol were already in Bilpam since 1975. The SPLA just displaced them in Bilpam in 1983.

    Learn to be “truthteller.”

Nevertheless, I welcome the SPLA 28th anniversary in Bor town. I hope it will be a big event. If somebody could buy me a ticket I could attend it there.

    People of the land,

learn to record history without distorting. Garang was sent by the then president Jafaar Nimer to quell the rebellion that was already taking place in Bor by former Anya soldiers. Garang found it difficult instead he joined the rebellion and moved to Ethiopia.

Don’t distort history those things have been documented in form of books. Don’t show your ignorance on the web.

people of south are still very much un aware of their own history. specialy most of the people that normaly coments on this site. one advice is that we realy want to live in peace as nation, 16th of may should not be celeberated again as we going to be an independent nation. because may the 16th was not the day spla was form in that regards has a very dark side to it. some time we don’t want to just everything on the media for it’s not in any one us’s interest to expose everything that led to our disagreemants.
