Sudan FM writes to UN chief on ending UNMIS mandate
May 28, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese foreign minister Ali Karti notified the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon via letter of his government’s request that the mandate of the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) end as planned on July 9, 2011,
He also said that Karti stressed that Sudan has provided maximum possible cooperation and fulfilled its obligations towards the CPA.
UNMIS was established in 2005 to ensure that northern and southern Sudan comply with the peace agreement they signed in the same year that ended two decades of civil war.
The South Sudan referendum, which is the final phase of the CPA, was held peacefully last January and resulted in an overwhelming vote in favor of independence.
However, issues such as the dispute over the oil-rich border region of Abyei and the lack of progress on North-South border demarcation are raising fears of possible military confrontation after July 9th.
Last week the Sudanese army entered Abyei and asserted control over it pushing Southern forces out. Thousands of its residents were forced to flee amid widespread burning and looting in the area.
This week the UN Secretary General proposed a new peacekeeping force of some 7,000 blue-helmeted troops for south Sudan once it secedes.
Diplomats and U.N. officials told Reuters on condition of anonymity that Khartoum does not want UNMIS to leave Sudan altogether though the Sudanese government would prefer that it be less visible in Khartoum.
Ban’s report said the new force should be called the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, or UNMISS.
The proposed new force will have to be approved by the UNSC.

For sure i don’t blame this an angry NCP for all what they are doing because they are all confused for losing our oil in the south of which the result will drop down their econonmic for 90% to 20% which they may get it from transportation of the crudes oil from the south to port Sudan if consider by the South-Sudan Government.Not only that also they are blaming the UNMIS for not giving them support which led the south seperation.They done not have authority to give mandate to UNMIS to leave Sudan.For sure NCP will be a failed party for ever and ever due to their regime with all dirty atrocities against humanity and they will face the consequence.

in the even of july the ninth. this oil can be shut down by gatdet in one day if the Goss is not carefull. you people need to think with your heads and read between the lines.
i don’t know what are these dinkas thinking when they always talk of oil while foregeting that the oil is at the border.you talk nasty about the nuers even burning down their homes and feel good about their oil while you sold your oil in abyei for your brother inlaw yaser arman to feed on in khartoum.
some time your writtings make me sick. do you people realy care about south sudan? or just it wealth? i know the north has more rich and intelletual people then the south. while we in the south luck intelletuality specially in the dinka community where even an intellectual reasons like a kid. talk to the southern rebel, reach an agreement before july the 9th. otherwise, the UN you always talk about will not come to your rescue because it will be level as a tribal war and will only brand south sudan a fail state.
that will give western countries more reason to inverse their money in the protex of helping u. in the end you will end up giving them the oil for free to pay your war debts if at all you win the war as a tribe. i talk to a top CIA official the other day and what i heard was disturbing. so you better be articulate before running your mouth.
be reasoning, just pouse and look around you? do you see any stability in the south under the leadership of kiir by chrismas this year? we need to work hard as south sudanese to see that happen.look at Kosovo, east timoor, just to mention a few that the so call UN has help became independent, what have they done there now? it is just to create employment opportunities for their citizens to go and work there as aid workers and business contractors draining the life blood out of those poor countries’s limited resources. i wish i could enter in the minds of some of those south sudanese so call intellectuals to see how they visualize south sudan compare to other developing countries.
