Jonglei state calls for increase in agricultural production in South Sudan to combat food security

By John Actually

June 4, 2011 (BOR) – Jonglei state’s minister of agriculture, Mayen Ngor has called on the agronomic stakeholders and civilians in South Sudan to substantially increase food production to combat food insecurity in the soon to be independent region.

Speaking in his office in Bor town on Saturday, Ngor said food security was a priority for South Sudan as it approaches secession from the north on July 9. South Sudan voted by 98 percent to separate from north Sudan in a referendum earlier this year that was part of a 2005 peace agreement.

“This is the time for us to produce enough food for the people of South Sudan. To have [a] new nation means we must have enough food and good security to ensure stability of the new nation”, said Ngor.

Ngor said Jongelei has started large scale food productions using 27 modern plough machines (Tractors) in the state’s eleven counties, obtained from Government of South Sudan, (GoSS), United Nation Development Program (UNDP), and Community Develop Funds (CDF).

The minister said the his ministry had received and distributed both seeds and plough machines in time and prepared farmers on how to use them ahead of the rainy season, which will allow farmers to plant crops.

He said Pigi county, which did not receive plough machines, is du to receive soon from the charity World Vision,

According to the minister, the late onset of rains and insecurity in the state have hindered farming operations across the state.

“Farmers are facing lack of rains and insecurity in their farms”, Ngor said. “But reports of insecurity are [an] isolated short term problem facing farm operations”.

Ngor said one farmer was killed in his field by an unknown gunman in Duk County while farming in last week.

Similar reports have been recorded in other counties forcing residents to flee the areas to towns where there is security.

Another man from Makuach Payam [district] in Bor County was killed by unknown gunman in an attempted raid on in Makuach village on Saturday, June 4.

Despite the difficulties facing food production in the state, Ngor said they are still optimistic to produce enough food for next years consumption.

“We are optimistic that we must produce enough food this year”, said Ngor.

Ngor is leaving on Sunday, 5, for agricultural tour to Bor, Twic East, Duk and Ayod counties that have accesable roads to inspect how farmers have prepared for this crop.

He said his second trip to inaccessible counties of Uror, Nyirol, Pangak, Pigi, Akobo, Pachalla and Pibor counties will be achieved once an flight from the United Nation Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) is secured.

Yes this is what south Sudan need at this time more tractors for farming rather us bickering ourselves. Put those ugly guns down and work towards building south Sudan through agriculture and other developmental means.

Wise ones should not think of governmental positions, rather, think of what south really need at this critical period and that is the development and unity of our people which we showed during voting. Votes alone will not raise up our country but our unity and determination to build it will raise it.

I will never agree with that minister, very good soil is at Bor, but no one care about agriculture. only war, rebellion, killing your brothers, looting money and caws.and at the top they wants free food, lastly they kill the person who gave them food.

Go to (W E S,every one are cultivating, food is cheap,no rebellion no killing, people are friendly.

Oh God,Jonglei State is always in front in everything. Every productive and successful plans always start in Jonglei state particularly in Mading-Bor, so I’m overwhelmed of the minister of agriculture, uncle Mayen Ngor’s farming plans to fight food security not only in Jonglei state but in the entire South Sudan and the whole world.

Thanks my beloved minister of agriculture and may God bless you abundantly.

Ngor should walk the talk by utilising the three tractors to increase food production in Jonglei than calling for the entire south sudan to combat food shortage.Western equatoria is not complaining of food shortage due to her stability and hard working people.First of all he should make peace with his neighbours I mean Lou Nuer, George Athor and Murle. Once insecurity is curtailed, then agriculture will prosper in Jonglei state

    H.E the Minister,
Do all what U said to show them that U R from your field of qualification in Agriculture and I belive that is where late Dr. John Garang knows U not in the bush like he did with the rest of Us.

security is not your issue but our problem in the whole of South Sudan, like that writer put it every thing bad or good come from upper nile or Jonglei, if U count how many leaders we have and how many Nyigat we have we are more than any state in the South Sudan that is 100% right.

Jonglei is the biggest state in the south in terms of area, and no. 2 in population to Warrap state but see the land is not use because of insecurity, roads are not good even the one connecting Juba which is 100, was not finished by both Kuol Manyang when he was the minister for roads in Khartoum and Mama Rebecca Nyandeng whe she was the Minister for roads in the GOSS,they both fail to do it and the president was right to say unless almighty God come down to finish the road of Juba Bor, if both Ministers from the same area and historical town of Bor could not finished their road while I thought Bor would have had road from Khartoum by Kuol and Juba by Nyandeng,we shall see after independent.

    Brother dinkador1,
Why do you always talked negatively instead to comment positively rather than your foible talks.I thought you would at first thanks the plan made by the state’s agricultural sector to combat hunger in the state. How come you disagreed to this well planned strategic break through economical well planned job.

Don’t you know that the people who often dwell in Town never do farming in towns?the only people who grow food are those who lived at the country side, the people from the town buy from them. Our people from the country sides are not secure such that they can cultivate and grow their own f

Let’s visit jonglei history. The people of Jonglei state used to lived in peace and harmony before the civil war broke out. There was no instability in Jonglei state since 1983 until 1991 when the evil felt upon the peaceful communities of Jonglei state.Evil was transported from somewhere to jonglei which they never had.

Yes there is avast plenty of fertile land in Jonglei for agricultural use.The people of Jonglei, bar al ghazal, upper nile and unity states supported the movement with there crops and animals at the same times without any rebellion or complain against the consumption of their wealth.

On behalf of your states, there were numerous rebellions against the movement who were in dire need of food since they were not stable to grow food for themselves while they are in front line to free you.You bewitched anyone who touches anything in your states, you killed thousands of innocence people for no reasons, you rebelled against the movement and sideline yourselves with the LRA and the Jalabas who often times abuses your beloved ones and lastly, you also killed each other with the use of WITCHES than any other Sudanese communities truly with your hateful KUNJURS.Please don’t just proud yourself by covering your witches activities which are well known. You are still killing innocence people upto date with your Magic.while on the other hand, you poisoned both innocence equatorians and none equatorians alike.please think positive such people will grant you respect and agree with you sometimes if you comment positively according to the concerned topic.

The killing of an aid worker was not committed by the Bor people but by the murle Gangstars who just roam around and about looking for something to steal.Even UN agents knew that as well. And if you disagree with me,then i will give you one example describing their character thus,The murle gangstars attacked the clinic in Gumuruok[ their own town and the clinic belong to them too ].what community have ever done that?

Point of advise,Please stay or be around any wise elders in your community who have wisdom to shape your negative thoughts. If you can do that, i think you could become a wise person and as a result you can help build peace in the South than what you are just doing.
    thanks
    wish you a better understandings
    Peace!!!!!!!!!!!1
