Sudan army says attacked by SPLA in South Kordofan

June 6, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) on Monday changed its earlier version about the events that took place in South Kordofan over the weekend saying that it clashed with the Sudan People Liberation Army (SPLA).

SAF spokesperson Al-Sawarmi Khalid Sa’ad was quoted by Sudan news agency (SUNA) as saying that on Sunday SPLA units carried a wide-scale attack in Umm Dorain about 12km southeast of South Kordofan’s capital state of Kadugli.

The military official said that the SAF company in the area “bravely carried out their duties” but were overwhelmed by a large influx of SPLA forces and were thus forced to withdraw to other positions.

The fighting led to one death and seven injuries from the SAF side, Sa’ad revealed.

“SAF reserves its full right to respond to that in the suitable time and place,” he said.

Yesterday the Sudanese army downplayed reports of clashes in the state saying it was an isolated incident caused by one soldier but declined to place blame on any side.

Multiple sources told Sudan Tribune on Sunday that SAF moved tanks south from El-Obeid and stationed them at Kadugli airport and near the compound of the UN’s World Food Program (WFP). They also established checkpoints on the main road heading north from Kadugli airport.

SAF tanks and heavy artillery were stationed in and around the state’s main town of Kadugli while clashes have been reported in surrounding villages, sources added.

There were widespread fears that SAF was moving to enforce the ultimatum it issued last month to SPLA to move out of the states of South Kordofan and Blue Nile. The SPLM rejected the deadline saying units in the border regions consist of Northern soldiers.

A UN official who spoke to Sudan tribune on condition of anonymity said that SPLA forces took over a police station in Kadugli while others moved to control a neighborhood in the city where former deputy governor Abdel-Aziz Al-Hilu resides.

In early May the National Congress Party (NCP), which governs North Sudan, beat the SPLM in controversial state elections to decide the state governor and the makeup of South Kordofan’s legislative assembly. Incumbent NCP governor, Ahmed Haroun was reinstated in office after defeating his deputy, the SPLM candidate Al-Hilu. International monitors endorsed the result despite claims of fraud by SPLM.

The SPLM has strong support in the northern border state’s of South Kordofan and Blue Nile as many people from the areas joined the SPLA/M in fighting Khartoum during Sudan’s second North-South’ civil war.

However with South Sudan due to secede in July after a referendum earlier this year both states will remain north of the border and governed by the NCP.

In late May the SAF moved to take over the neighboring disputed region of Abyei in retaliation to an SPLA attack on one of its conveys near the oil-rich district while being escorted by UN peacekeepers.

The North has rejected demands by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to withdraw and president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir declared that Abyei belongs to the North.

WAR FEARS IN SOUTH KORDOFAN

On Monday heavy shooting took place in Kadugli close to the residence of South Kordofan governor.

Eyewitnesses told Sudan Tribune by phone that gunshots can be heard all over Kadugli and stressing that the town is in a very tense situation following clashes that erupted on Sunday and continued today.

They added that SPLA soldiers came down unexpectedly from nearby mountains and started shooting on SAF positions which prompted an intense exchange of fire.

The United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) confirmed the clashes today.

“The fighting appears to be between elements from the SAF and SPLA,” said Kouider Zerrouk, a spokesman for UNMIS was cited as saying by Agence France Presse (AFP).

The Secretary general of SPLM in the North Yasir Arman said in a press release that the incidents remain “isolated” and that dialogue is underway to resolve it. He said that the presidency created a joint NCP-SPLM delegation, SAF and security organs which arrived in Kadugli to meet with officials from both sides in a bid to diffuse tensions.

Arman said that the delegation established a committee to review the situation and come up with solutions that are acceptable to both sides. He added that Sudan’s 2nd Vice president Ali Osman Taha was in contact with the president of South Sudan Salva Kiir to contain the issue.

But On Tuesday heavy fighting was reported to have resumed in Kadugli.

As part of the 2005 peace deal that ended the conflict, and granted South Sudan the right to self determination, the two states were accorded ‘popular consultations’ to consider whether the Comprehensive Peace Agreement addressed their grievances and propose what their future relationship with Khartoum might look like.

The much delayed processes are yet to be completed despite there being only a little over a month until the official end of the peace deal and South Sudan’s independence.

It is obviously that the SPLA does not want peace. Unfortunately the poor and the innocent will suffer, SPLA thugs will run away to their looted foreign bank accounts!

SPLA should withdraw all of it’s elements from our country , they have their own country and they should look for peace. Seems they didn’t learn from Abeyis lesson or they donnot care as long as they are not threatened themselves!

It is crystal clear Khartoum establishment took the marginilised Sudanese for a political ride. It never honoured any agreement it made with SPLM or SLM or any Sudanese movement for that matter. Abyei is overran militarily, South Kordofan and Blue Nile is under threat from the Islam sword of Jallaba. It is matter Juba must ponder seriously otherwise the fire of war has been lit. We in South Sudan needs togetherness. In short our leadership should have instituted fairness, justice, equality and freedom as the key ingredients of their leadership since day one because the good days few of us are enjoying might be short lived. Together we must enjoy the fruits of our land and together we must stand to defend our birth rights when in danger from our enemies – Jallaba.

    Jur ,

What agreement you are talking about? CPA is over ,you have your own country and you have to withdraw yourb spla forces from the north.Any presence will not be tolerated.

The marginalized people exist only in the south , where more than 50% of the population are starving, with no security or saftey and the poor childrens are snatched from their mothers to be enslaved. Stop these things first and then come to preach us about marginalization.

Mohamed Ali and all the NCP supporters.

The war has start and knows that you will never win it this time as you never won for the 21 years we have been fighting. Remember, it is said winning a battle does not means winning a war. Your being in control of states resources had given you an advantage edge during few battles but it did not neutralised the conviction of the SPLA soldiers. The same will is embedded in the minds of freedom fighters in Nuba Mountains and Blue Nile as well as in Darfur.

It is also said that don’t throw stones at others when you are in a glass building, your own stone will bring down your house. Moreover, are you aware of how many Northerners gained political consciousness during the six years the New Sudan ideology has been drummed into them and they were receptive? You are oblivious of this; in the far north, there is discontent growing and I will not talk of other parts of Sudan you already know. Soon you will be either a prisoner of war or a refugee in a neighbouring country.

It is true that the CPA is coming closer to any end,but Sudan is still a one country two systems. Secondly, those SPLA forces in Nuba Mountain are Nubians. So, where are you going to chase them. They are rightful owners of that land and they should stay.

Let Mohammed Kara say whatever satisfies him. The fact that remains on ground is Jallaba came from Arabian Peninsula in Middle East, they have no right to tell any indiginous Sudanese to pack and leave the homeland. When the hosts keep silent and ask for harmonious relationship it does not mean they are cowards. Watch out Africa defended itself with assegais, bows and arrows unlike today where ammunitions and guns are available everywhere.

    Atem,

Who will dare to chase Nubian from their land ? Through-out history Sudan was called Nubia land. We are basically Nubians. Not all Nubians are supporters of the SPLA. Nobody against the popular consultation, we want it. We dont want war. It has destroyed our country for fifty years. That is more than enough. Now the borders which we didn’t demarkate in the first place are being redrawn and you want to have your own state; that is fine with us , we wish you all the best. All the remaining issues could be solved easily. without violence or war.

Nuba mountain and blue nile are part of Sudan and popular consultation will be carried according to the CPA. In fact it had already started in the BN. BUT, this is no longer the concern of the GOSS or THE SPLA.

SPLA members in these ares should either withdraw to the south or disarm. We have only one Arm thatis the SAF.

Let us suppose that we came from Arabia? So what? Should we tell the Nylotic tribe who migrated from the Mssai areas in the 15th century and with whom they are linked linguistically, genetically, physically and religously; should we tell them go back to Tanzia or Kenya!Or should we tell the Azandi and Acholi you are from Uganda “as you always say to the”

We are Nubians and this our land, we still speak the same language with one of the first civillizations on Earth.

SPLA has repeated its stupid mistake in Abyei that led to its humble defeat by SAF friends and SSLA of Gat Naath ni General Peter Gaddiet. SPLA wants to collect another shameful defeat again.

International community must take an action against this terrorist organization led by Dinka syndicates in the SPLM becfore it ignite another war in that part of the world called Sudan. Otherwise, let no one complain including USA and agents such as UNSC if SAF and SSLA of Peter Gaddeit say enough is enough and decide to insert their fingers right in the anuses of SPLA because people can in this terror of USA alley called SPLA.

If USA could not control its milita we people of Sudan from both southern and Northern Sudan will ask the UN and the African Union to list USA with the countries that support terrorism, like France and UK or say EU countries.

For your info Sudan will never be like Libya because people of Southern Sudan are not happy with SPLA syndicate and the coming war is going to be the most complicated type of civil war Sudan had ever seen. because the Naath and other freedom loving southern tribes who denounce SPLA disastrous wars and terror , will be deeply involved in that conflict which make it impossible for the International community run by USA and Isreal to intervene in the pretext of human protection as usual their only way
they always invade Government s of third world with.

Don’t make a mistake and Arm SPLA thugs as those weapons will be ours and take my word not for joke but as real.

Mohammed Ali, telling truth is always the right way to go about it but the truth is, you like the rest of most north sudanese are not used to doing that and that is a problem with you people. North, particularly NCP is dying into dragging south Sudan into war on the hope that this will give them another change of having things back the way they had always been so that you people will continue stealing the riches of south Sudan but it is too late for your old games.

South Sudanese people with all the tribal divisions you people have cultivated in them so as keep your monopoly of the country had not worked during feet dragging of the CPA implementation and it will not work now either. The fact that July 9th is days away and your devils haven’t succeeded into provoking Southerners into war is killing those of you but South Sudan has wise leaders who knew what they were doing and when to decide going into war with those of you.

Time will come when you people will regret your foolish past and present acts but it will be then too late.
I have never seen a people who instead of correcting their errors are adding fuel to the fire.

    Ali,

SPLA soldiers in Blue Nile,South Kordofan and Eastern Sudan are not from the south they are northerners. If you can’t solve your own problem, then don’t blame the south.

Basher know that the only way to avoid Hague prison is to instigate and start another war. in addition, NCP politicians want to create fear to stay in power because they other political parties in the north will defeat them in fair election.

NCP politicians thought that they can fool the south Sudan government by attacking Abyei and looted all foods in the UN storage. they are looking for the way to interrupt our independent day but they failed. If the north haven’t defeated us for the last 21 years when the south didn’t had any financial support or friends and not united as it is today, then they are fooling themselves.let them stay in Abyei until we celebrate our independent.

If you are jalaba, you can not claim yourself to be Nubian.
the people who live in the north are slave. I mean arab slave who called themselves Arab are slave of muslim. Remember last year Lebanese security guard called Sudan muslim niggas despite their claim that they were Arab Sudanese. No one accept them in Arab world but they just keep orienting themselves to Arab. I was so disappointed for them, to see these people so-called Arab of Sudan were washed down by the people whom they called brotherhood of Islam in Lebanon.
stop calling yourselves Arab, but call yourselves muslim slave because your are not physically arab but mutant who speak arabic, Nubian are not Arab and are not arab slave but they lived in the north. That is an assumption you may generalised them as arab.
