Unity state governor briefs UNMIS chief on peace talks

By Bonifacio Taban Kuich

June 8, 2011 (BENTIU) – The top UN official in South Sudan met with the Unity state governor on Tuesday in Benitu to discuss current developments in peace negotiations with the rebel Gatluak Gai.

David_Gressly_UNMIS_regional_coordinator_19_Oct_2010_ST_.jpgDavid Gressly, the UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) regional coordinator for South Sudan, said he has a number of items on his agenda here in Unity state.

Gressly said that they will also travel to Mayom county to work on boundary issues.

On Tuesday Gressly met with Unity state governor, Taban Deng Gai to discuss the current status of peace talks with rebel Gatluak Gai. Last week the governor allocated an assembling point area for Gatluak Gai’s forces in Pakur district, Koch county, about 120 kilometers far away from Bentiu town.

Gai was a supporter of the former Unity state gubernatorial candidate, Angelina Teny who went into last year’s April election as an independent against Sudan Peoples’ Liberation Movement’s (SPLM) official nominee, the incumbent Governor Taban Deng Gai. Teny, the wife of Southern Sudan’s Vice President Riek Machar, contested the position as an independent after failing to secure approval of her candidacy by the SPLM’s 27 member political bureau – the highest political structure in southern Sudan’s ruling party.

Teny promised to appoint Gai as a county commissioner in the event that she won the election. However, the National Elections Commission announced results in favour of the SPLM nominee, prompting Gai, among others, to contest the outcome. Subsequently in May 2010, Gai, became a leader of an armed rebel group active in the western part of Mayom county.

George Athor, who formerly served as a top military officer in the South’s Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA), became a rebel commander after losing a gubernatorial race for Jonglei state. Like Angelina Teny, Athor failed to secure the endorsement of his candidature by the SPLM political bureau.

Gressly asked Unity State authorities how citizens were coping with the blocked transport routes coming from the north, which has left fuel and some other items in significant shortage. State officials told him that Unity state will persevere through the blockade, since they are also receiving goods from the south up through Lakes state. Unity state still has access to trade on the White Nile.

Gatluak Gai’s forces united with Peter Gatdet last month and they have been responsible for instability in the region.

On Monday, state authorities supplied the rebel militia with food after its leader appeared for peace negotiations with the state SPLA. There is still no official deal in place, and there has of yet been no word from the side of Gatluak Gai if he is satisfied with the negotiations.

Gressly’s visit is also to include a journey to the north-south border area, where there are high levels of tension between northern and southern forces.

    Mr. Bonifacio Taban Kuich.

I said, last time that, all these rebels will come back later, because I think they were doubting that, the SPLA /SPLM will not lead Southern Sudanese to their promise land but now they understood better than anyone and yes, let them come back but you guys from Unity State avioding careless and pay more attention to what Khartoum government are trying.

Gatluak Gai and Peter Gatdate Yaka must apologized before they should come to surrender to SSAF/SPLA because there was no any reason for them to creates rebellion. Gai was wrong to created rebel just because of his running mate was not being approved for governorship so that, he will be appointed as a Mayor. I see our Southern Sudanese did not real understand what is called Public servics, when you are looking to serve in Public serve first be sincerely and be respectful person to the Public because there is no one own it and it is belong to anyone can serve therefore, his running mate and himself were assuming the title of Public servces rather than, showing respect so that, people will say this guy is a good leader and that Madam of Southern Sudan’s V.P she is honest.

Peter Gadate Yaka has lost his mind otherwise, he wouldn’t let himself to be pushing by others who are desperate for leadership to make coup to his president while, there is a main issue facing his own people Southern Sudanese. He was the Cdr in Northern Bahr al Ghazal regions and he was having a big responsibility to take care of his Southern Sudan’s Army battalions unfortunatel, Gadate turned his guns to his SPLA Friends what a foolishly man is this.? He said, he want to overthrow his government because of two things. one was corruption in the GOSS but in reality his Officials offices were complaining about money that, he use to cut from battalion which he was leading, we see Gadate Yaka as he was part of Juba corruption he claim. Two, he said, there is a tribalism in GOSS but when left to Khartoum then, he was been given militia and all kinds of resupply to come and made attacked in Warrap community on Apuk Giir Thiik community and also attacked SPLA in Unity State is that not a tribalism.? Peter Gadate himself had married about 70 wives and having two wives in the government is absolutely a corruption and against the law. All these rebels including Author Dengg Dut and the Murel guy are all wrongful and they must first make apology before they should talks about peace.

Message to Unity citizens, governor Taban Deng Gaie, MP Officials of State Unity and the SPLA Division Four. Please tell them that, you must be careful about these militia because the Khartoum government are telling them to make interupted during Southern Sudan’s independent day this is something that, all Southern Sudanese Officials and even local people must not sleeping. If they are really serious for peace then, they have to put down their weapons and surrender to SPLA in Unity State. They don’t see what North Sudan Army does in Abyei District, this is need all Southern Sudanese to show their bravery to those North Sudan Army who were invaded Abyei District and not turning your guns against your own citizens. There is nothing will prevent Southern Sudanese to get independent, but those rebels who will be still in the Bush will have no future for real because Southern Sudanese people are so tried to stayed in the Bush for 22 years and I think our people will be interesting to started development just like many others world did.

    Thanks

    Dear readers,

Don’t be confused and blame the SPLA leaders in the Unity State because in our tradition as southerners to give food to your enemy is a sign of good motives and I hope that they will reach an agreement together.

My warning is to the SPLA as the soon to become a national army not to follow any politician or allows her members to join or support any political party because that will jeopardize their integrity and efficacy as a national army. Their duty is to defend the country from both outside and inside threat to the security of the citizens of southern Sudan. Any power thirst who will ever rebel because he/she lost the election must be dealt with seriously because he/she is a traitor and an enemy of the democracy. Any allegation of vote rigging in any democracy countries are dealt with according to the laws of each country not through military force. I also warn all the rebels to seek peace with the government, otherwise they will fight all their life time hiding from place to place without gaining anything, and if they attempt one day to go for the election they will not win because of their greedy for power without vision. Please go on Mr. governor and make peace with those who seek peace in your State, and don’t listen to the rubbish words of those who disagree with you, for peace leads to development. Keep it on.

    Peace vs War

Its said; in every game, there is always a winner!
The more we stupidly welcome the rebels, the more we open chances of losing and encourage the rebellion which put the lives of innocent people and peace lovers at risk on such a deliverate blander – own goal.

It was a good idea by Taban Deng Gai to call on Gatluak Gai for a peace deal but not wise idea to supply food for them.
If you have enough food, why can’t you help those internally displaced than wasting it on myopic losers who can’t appreciate what is given to them…….Mr. Taban, you are betraying the innocent citizens or shall we say “Birds of the same feathers flock together” its really annoying.

Again, the weird comments that you guys (some individuals) are posting here and pointing finger on tribes will make us always lag behind even if you all pretend to be literate.
Why can’t you express meaningful ideas that bursting into war-of-words on each other? Watch out!!! Today is a determinant of tomorrow.

    Wen-de-Majok – Proud of being a Sudanese.
