SAF air raid kills 5 civilians in Sudan’s Unity state: official

By Bonifacio Taban Kuic

June 9 2011 (BENTIU) – The northern Sudanese Army Forces (SAF) have bombarded Parieng County of South Sudan’s Unity state that borders South Kordofan state in the North in the early hours of Thursday, an official here said today.

miggzj9-2-292cd.jpgThe airstrike comes in the wake of SAF military operations in South Kordofan against units from Sudan People Liberation Army (SPLA) since last weekend.

Mabeak Lang Bilkuey commissioner of Parieng County told Sudan Tribune on Thursday evening that the heavy bombardments was targeting the division 9 of SPLA at Jaw payam [district] leaving 5 civilians dead and 15 seriously wounded.

Jaw payam which is about 45 kilometers from Parieng town experienced three hours of bombardments by the SAF on Thursday, he said.

Bilkuey added that over 2,000 civilians have fled the area toward Parieng County.

The commissioner claimed that the SPLA had taken control of over 13 towns within the South Kordofan state, saying this is why they decided to launch air attacks in Unity state against civilians “who have no connection with any of these conflicts between both armies”.

Bilkuey called upon citizens to demonstrate on Friday so that the world observes “the barbaric air attack by the Sudanese Army Forces on the innocent civilians”.

The Unity state government has condemned the air raid as an “unlawful act” committed by the Khartoum government.

Fighting between SAF and SPLA erupted in South Kordofan’s state capital of Kadugli and surrounding areas which both sides traded blame for starting it. The clashes came after northern officials said that all SPLA soldiers must move south of the border despite the SPLA soldiers in South Kordofan and Blue Nile state not being southern Sudanese.

Southern Kordofan, an oil-producing state which lies in northern territory, has long been seen as a flashpoint because it is home to thousands of fighters who fought alongside the south against Khartoum during the last civil war.

The ruling National Congress Party (NCP) declared yesterday that the events in the state are an “armed rebellion” and will be dealt with militarily.

South Sudan is wary of being embroiled in a war that could derail the region’s official independence day of July 9 and as such insisted that it has no intention of going to war with the North despite the recent military escalation.

NCP and SAF are continuing dancing in the home town of SPLM/A but no one even try to block them black. South Sudan transitional constitution is the choice for south Sudan president when rifting up his Vic president Dr. Machar as the cheapest way to do so; but Omer Al Bashir and SAF look to expensive to him.

If there are SPLA aircrafts they should be launched against SAF in the contesting areas. We cannot wait while our citizens are being displaced and being killed.
Retaliation and self defense are the best options before the July 9 and after that the really war will be declared.

Has the most stupid governor Tabon Deng provided anything to the affected community of Parieng, the families of 5 deceased and the 15 wounded?

This governor needs to rethink because everybody seems to have hated him, or otherwise he would be wished death sooner

    Dear brothers,

I might be different in opinion, take me like a coward if you think that way, but I’ am aware of the situation at the borders. First, i would through out my heart felt warm condolence to the innocent families of the lost one. It’s really sad that great number is being lost every day in the eve of Independence.
Second, I am thinking that if Sudan’s government had not killed the soul of Southern Sudanese or collectively people of New Sudan during the decades of war, then it wouldn’t do that in this short time to Independence and recognition of our Republic. I would argue that the present of SPLA in those disputed area is the reason for the escalation of fighting. I know Abyei is ours, Southern Kordofan, and even part of if not most of Eastern Sudan, but I think we should focus first on achieving Southern Sudan as a republic. Yes, it’s already a country as we call it inside Southern Sudan, but the fact is, we wouldn’t be recognize by the world till the world dignitaries are able to announce that on the July 9th. This scheduled July 9 is not for nothing, and it wouldn’t be safe for world leaders to come there if such fierce fight continue. After this day, everyone who do business of any kind such redrawing the map of Africa or saying that African added one more nation to Nations sending their Ambassadors to Southern Sudan would have the free will to do that. So, if my voice was to penetrate into the ears of Southern Sudan Government, we should tries by all mean to redraw our troops inside the current borders, just to wait for this day, and not caused death as in this case inside Unity State. I am positive that the civilians in those disputed areas wouldn’t be slaughtered when they don’t put on gun fight. Also, we could send UN & AU troops to watch over these civilians.
Yes, our military might be strong, but even more after we have initial boundaries that we call Southern Sudan. So, I am for peace inside Southern Sudan now, and keep in our mind that all our colleagues in those disputed areas are in our heart as we celebrate here for a short time.

Dear Peter Pal, I thank you for your deep concern of the death of your fellow Southerners in the hands of our enemy but blaming Salva Kiir or Riak Machar or Hoth Mai for inaction is equally irresponsible at this time when we are only few days away from July 9th. Yes what is in your mind now is what North Sudan Arabs want at this time so that so Sudan could not celebrate what they earned with their lives and votes.

Salva is a brave man that is known to south Sudanese people, a man that fought our enemy without running in and out during 21 years of the struggle and so is our brave brother Hoth Mai. These are leaders that Southerners could relie on. They know no fear but what they are doing now is something only few that look few meters ahead of them can do and as for short sighted people, they see it as weakness or fear and I don’t blame them for that because not everybody is born smart and that would not be their fault. So, I am asking you and other impatient brothers to cool down, July 9th is only few days away and north continue to attack our people then, and they don’t do anything about it, then we have the right to question them.

ON POINT ST FORGOT TO MENTION :

UN spokeswoman denied that the northern army had launched air strikes south of the border.

“The place that they bombed was an SPLA assembly area, right on the north-south border. This is one of the disputed territories,” Hua Jiang for the UN mission in Sudan told AFP. A Sudanese army spokesman was not immediately available for comment.
